Chapter 6

Three years later.

I stood in the kitchen of a new home—mine. Sunlight streamed through the windows. Flowers bloomed in boxes beneath the sill. Just like before. But this time, I felt safe.

I taught fourth grade. I walked to work. I laughed with friends. I slept through the night without flinching at every loud sound.

My parents came over often. They brought dinner. They helped plant the garden. They apologized, still, with every chance they got.

Daniel moved away. I heard he left Seattle entirely. No one knew where. Or perhaps no one cared enough to ask.

Elena became a dear friend. We helped other women. We spoke at shelters. We told them the same thing she had told me.

He is betting on you being too afraid to fight. Prove him wrong.

One afternoon, I pulled the notebook from the back of a locked drawer.

I flipped through the pages. The dates. The descriptions. His handwriting, small and ashamed in the margins.

I closed it. I carried it outside. To the fire pit in the garden.

I held it over the flames.

Every word. Every date. Every mark of shame.

I let it go.

The pages curled. The ink vanished. The lies burned away.

I stood there watching it turn to ash.

He had tried to destroy me. He had tried to make me feel small, ashamed, silent. He had counted on me staying. On me forgiving him again and again until he finally killed me.

But I had survived.

And I had won.

Not because I ruined him. But because I walked away and built something real. Something honest. Something safe.

I breathed in the fresh air. I watched the last of the smoke drift upward and vanish.

My name is Sarah Bennett.

I was the woman everyone thought had the perfect life. Then I learned that perfect can be dangerous. That the safest man can be the most dangerous one of all.

But I learned something else too.

That the moment you stop fearing them… they lose all their power.

Daniel Mercer took three years of my life. But he did not take my courage. My truth. Or my future.

Those were mine.

And they were finally, completely safe.
