Chapter 8: My Mother's Final Decision
For a moment, I couldn't bring myself to touch the document.
My mother's signature sat at the bottom of the page.
I knew that handwriting. I had seen it on birthday cards, lunch notes, and the letters she used to tuck into my schoolbag when I was little.
The long curve beneath the capital E.
The tiny dot after her name.
It was unmistakably hers.
And according to the document Denise had just placed on the coffee table, my mother had intended to divide her savings between me and Vanessa.
I looked up.
“Why didn't Dad know about this?””
Denise wiped her cheeks.
“Because your mother changed the arrangement shortly before she died.””
Dad picked up the document.
“That's impossible. Eleanor told me the account was for Maya.””
“She told you what she wanted you to know.””
His face tightened.
“Denise, don't.””
“I'm telling the truth!””
“Then explain why you hid the document.””
She looked at him.
“Because I knew what you'd do with it.””
“And what would that be?””
“You'd give Maya everything and tell yourself you were honoring Eleanor's wishes.””
I stared at the paper.
“Why would Mom leave money to Vanessa? She barely knew her.””
Denise's eyes flashed.
“Your mother knew more than you think.””
“What does that mean?””
She sat down on the sofa, her hands twisting together.
“Eleanor found out about Richard shortly before she died.””
Dad went completely still.
“What?””
Denise looked at him.
“She knew Vanessa's biological father was alive. She knew I'd been receiving money from Richard. And she knew I was struggling to keep up with my debts.””
I shook my head.
“Mom was sick. Why would she be involved in your finances?””
“Because she was a good person,” Denise snapped.
“Because even when she had every reason to hate me, she offered to help.””
Dad looked as though the floor had shifted beneath him.
“What exactly did Eleanor know?””
Denise drew a shaky breath.
“She knew Richard had been threatening to take Vanessa away from me if I couldn't repay what I owed him. He wanted custody, or at least a legal arrangement that gave him control over her future.””
I frowned.
“Why would he want custody after abandoning her?””
“Because his family had money, and they wanted a child to carry on the family name. Richard's father was ill. He believed Vanessa should be raised around his family, not hidden away in a modest house with a single mother.””
I looked at the document again.
“And Mom thought giving Vanessa part of her savings would help?””
Denise nodded.
“Eleanor wanted to prevent Richard from dragging Vanessa through a custody battle. She said the money could be used to settle the debt and give Vanessa a chance to grow up without being pulled between two families.””
Dad sank into a chair.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she knew you would refuse to get involved with Richard.””
“Of course I would have! The man had abandoned a child!””
Denise's voice cracked.
“And Eleanor knew that. She also knew that Vanessa was innocent.””
I stood by the coffee table, struggling to make sense of what I was hearing.
My mother had apparently known about Denise's secret before she died. She had tried to help Vanessa, despite everything.
But that didn't explain the withdrawals.
It didn't explain why Denise had continued taking money years later.
And it didn't explain why my mother's supposed wishes had never been discussed with me.
“Read the document,” Dad said suddenly.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Read the entire thing.””
I picked up the paper.
The first paragraph stated that my mother intended to divide the funds in her savings account between me and Vanessa, with the money to be held until both of us reached adulthood.
The second paragraph explained that a portion of Vanessa's share could be used to settle documented obligations related to her biological father's financial support.
The final paragraph contained a condition.
I read it twice before speaking.
“'No funds shall be transferred to any third party without the written consent of the appointed trustee and the beneficiary concerned.''”
I looked up.
“Who was the trustee?””
Dad took the paper from me and examined the bottom.
His expression changed.
“Me.””
Denise nodded.
“Eleanor appointed you.””
“Then why was I never shown this?””
“Because the original document was amended.””
Dad turned toward her.
“By whom?””
Denise looked down.
“Richard.””
“He couldn't change Eleanor's instructions!””
“He didn't change her instructions. He prepared a supplemental agreement.””
“Without my knowledge?””
“You signed the original paperwork.””
“I never signed an amendment.””
Denise's lips trembled.
“Then Richard must have forged your signature.””
The room fell silent.
I felt a cold weight settle in my stomach.
“Are you accusing Richard Brooks of forging Dad's signature?””
“I'm telling you what I believe happened.””
Dad stood abruptly.
“No. You're trying to move the blame somewhere else.””
Denise rose from the sofa.
“I am not!””
“Then explain the withdrawals.””
She looked at the document.
“I was trying to settle the debt. I thought Richard would stop threatening me once the payments were complete.””
“How much did you owe him?””
She hesitated.
“Twenty-four thousand dollars originally.””
“And how much did you pay?””
“I don't remember.””
Dad's expression hardened.
“You don't remember where thirty-eight thousand dollars went?””
“Some of it was used for household expenses!””
“Which ones?””
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
I stepped forward.
“Was any of it used for Vanessa's wedding?””
Denise looked at me.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Ten thousand dollars.””
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“Mom!””
We all turned.
She stood there wearing yesterday's sweatshirt, her face pale and her eyes swollen.
“You said you weren't going to tell them that.””
Denise stared at her.
“You weren't supposed to be here.””
“I came back for my passport!””
Vanessa's gaze moved to the document in my hand.
Then to the envelope on the table.
“What did you tell them?””
Dad folded his arms.
“The truth, apparently. Something neither of you has been very good at.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
She walked into the living room and stopped beside Denise.
“Mom, please.””
I looked at her.
“Vanessa, did you know Mom had intended to leave you part of the money?””
She shook her head.
“Not until a few months ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“A few months ago?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“Mom showed me a copy of the beneficiary schedule. She said Grandma Brooks had been asking questions about the family trust, and she needed me to sign some documents.””
“Grandma Brooks?””
“Richard's mother.””
Dad's expression sharpened.
“Why would Richard's mother be involved?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because she wanted me to know who my biological father was.””
Silence fell.
I stared at her.
“When did you find out?””
“Last year.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
“You knew for a year?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
“You didn't know how to tell me that your biological father was alive, or that you might be entitled to money Mom left for us?””
“I didn't know what I was entitled to!””
“But you knew enough to take the money.””
Her face twisted.
“I didn't take all of it!””
“No,” I said.
“You only took enough to ruin my future.””
Vanessa flinched.
For a moment, she looked genuinely ashamed.
Then Denise reached for her hand.
“Don't let her make you feel guilty. Eleanor wanted you to have that money.””
I held up the document.
“Eleanor also said nobody could transfer it without permission.””
Denise looked away.
Dad picked up his phone.
“I'm calling the attorney. We need to verify this document and find out whether the amendment is legitimate.””
Denise grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, please. Don't do this.””
He gently removed her hand.
“You've had years to tell me the truth.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you'd leave me.””
Dad looked at her for a long time.
“You should have thought about that before you started stealing from my daughter.””
He walked into the office and shut the door.
Vanessa sank onto the sofa.
I stood opposite her.
For years, I had imagined that if I ever discovered the reason behind Vanessa's cruelty, it might make it easier to forgive her.
Perhaps she had been jealous because Denise favored her. Perhaps she had been frightened of losing her place in the family. Perhaps she had grown up believing that love was something she had to fight for.
But none of those explanations erased what she had done.
“You could have told me,” I said quietly.
Vanessa stared at her hands.
“I know.””
“You could have asked Dad for help. You could have asked me what I knew about Mom's account. You could have done anything except destroy my dress and take money that wasn't yours.””
Her eyes filled.
“I was angry.””
“At me?””
“At everyone.””
She wiped her nose with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.
“Richard's family started contacting me last year. They kept talking about my future, about the family business, about how I should have been raised. Suddenly, I had this whole other life I never knew existed.””
“And you thought taking my money would help you fit into it?””
“No.”” Her voice cracked.
“I thought if I could pay for the wedding, Ethan's family would stop treating me like some girl who came from nowhere.””
I stared at her.
“Ethan's family knows about Richard?””
She nodded.
“His father is Richard's business partner.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I looked at the agreement on the table.
Richard Brooks.
Ethan Brooks.
The wedding venue deposit.
The missing money.
Suddenly, the connections felt too deliberate to ignore.
“Did Ethan know about the account?””
Vanessa hesitated.
That was all the answer I needed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“He knew about some of it.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“He knew Mom was helping me with the wedding deposit.””
“Did he know the money came from my mother's savings?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“He said it was a family trust.””
I stepped backward.
“And you let me believe you were just jealous of my dress.””
“I was jealous of your dress!””
The confession burst out of her.
“I was jealous of everything, Maya! You had Dad's love. You had your mother's memory.
You had a future that didn't depend on anyone else. I had to beg people to take me seriously, and then Ethan's family made me feel like I wasn't good enough to marry him unless I could contribute something.””
She covered her face.
“So yes, I destroyed your dress. I wanted you to feel small for once.””
I stared at her.
“And the money?””
She lowered her hands.
“I thought I'd replace it.””
“With what?””
She didn't answer.
I turned away.
I couldn't look at her anymore.
Dad returned with his phone in his hand.
“The attorney wants copies of every document. He'll verify the signatures and contact the bank.””
He glanced at Vanessa.
“And he's advised us not to transfer, destroy, or alter anything until the records are reviewed.””
Denise sat rigidly on the sofa.
“Marcus, if you take this to court, everyone will find out about Vanessa's father.””
Dad looked at her.
“That's no longer my greatest concern.””
Her eyes filled.
“You'll destroy our family.””
He shook his head.
“You did that when you decided the truth was less important than your secrets.””
Denise stood, grabbed her handbag, and walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?”” Vanessa asked.
Denise stopped.
For a moment, she looked at her daughter with an expression I couldn't read.
Then she said, “To speak to Richard.””
She left without another word.
Vanessa remained on the sofa, staring at the floor.
I thought the confrontation was over.
Then my phone rang.
It was the anonymous number.
I answered.
A woman's voice came through, shaky and unfamiliar.
“Maya Carter?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Helen Brooks. I'm Richard's mother.””
I straightened.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because I saw the document Denise showed you.””
My heart began to race.
“How?””
“Richard sent me a photograph. He thinks I can help explain what happened.””
I looked at Dad.
He moved closer.
Helen continued.
“Your mother did intend to leave money for both girls. But the document Denise showed you isn't the complete agreement.””
“What do you mean?””
“There was another condition. Eleanor added it shortly before she died.””
I gripped the phone.
“What condition?””
Helen's voice trembled.
“She wanted to make sure that if either girl was ever pressured into giving up her inheritance, the entire trust would be reviewed by an independent trustee.””
Dad went completely still.
I looked at the papers scattered across the coffee table.
“Why would she add that?””
“Because she suspected someone was already trying to control the money.””
My throat tightened.
“Who?””
Helen paused.
Then she said, “Maya, your mother came to me three weeks before she died. She told me she was afraid that Denise wasn't the only person involved.””
I felt the room grow cold.
“Who else was involved?””
Helen took a shaky breath.
“Ethan Brooks.””
I stared at Vanessa.
Her face went white.
Because if Helen was telling the truth, Ethan hadn't merely benefited from the stolen money.
May you like
He might have been part of the plan from the beginning.
And the wedding scheduled to celebrate Vanessa's future had just become the place where the truth could destroy it.
