Chapter 4: Her Brother Knew Everything

Daniel Williams stood just inside the backyard gate, holding a brown leather folder against his chest.

He looked nothing like his sister.

Where Tasha could fill a room with confidence, Daniel seemed uncomfortable attracting attention. He was thirty-six, worked in commercial property management, and had always been polite whenever we met.

I'd never considered him a close friend.

But I'd trusted him enough to let him into my home.

Now he was standing in front of thirty guests, looking at me like a man who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.

Tasha moved immediately.

"Daniel, what are you doing here?""

He ignored her.

"Marcus, I need to talk to you.""

"About what?""

He looked at the documents in my hand.

"About the house. And about the money.""

Tasha grabbed his arm.

"Not here.""

Daniel pulled away.

"Actually, I think here is exactly where we need to talk.""

Her face hardened.

"You're my brother. You should be on my side.""

"I was on your side when you told me this was legitimate.""

He opened his folder.

"Then I found out what you were actually doing.""

I looked at Nicole.

She gave me a small nod.

"Let him speak," she said.

Daniel placed a document on the table.

It was a printed bank transfer confirmation.

The amount was $18,500.

The sender was Tasha Williams.

The recipient was Daniel Williams.

I stared at the number.

"What is this?""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Three months ago, Tasha came to me with an investment proposal.""

Tasha immediately interrupted.

"That was a personal loan.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You told me Marcus had agreed to refinance the property. You said you were going to receive your share of the equity.""

I looked at Tasha.

"My share?""

She didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

"You said the house was jointly owned, but Marcus was being difficult about signing the documents. You told me not to worry because everything was already arranged.""

I slowly placed the transfer confirmation on the table.

"And you gave her money?""

"Yes. Eighteen thousand five hundred dollars.""

"Why?""

Daniel looked embarrassed.

"She said she wanted to invest in a commercial property with me. She promised to return the money once the refinance went through.""

Tasha stepped closer.

"Daniel, stop making this sound worse than it is.""

He turned toward her.

"Worse? You told me Marcus was going to sign. You showed me a copy of his supposed authorization.""

My stomach tightened.

"Authorization?""

Daniel nodded.

"I have it.""

He opened the folder and removed a photocopied document.

Nicole took it before I could.

Her eyes moved quickly across the page.

Then she stopped.

"Marcus, this is important.""

She placed it beside the suspected loan application.

The signature was almost identical.

The same unnatural angle on the letter B.

The same misplaced stroke at the end.

Nicole looked at Daniel.

"Where did you receive this?""

"From Tasha.""

"When?""

"About six weeks ago.""

Tasha shook her head.

"That was just a draft!""

Nicole studied the document.

"A draft of what?""

Tasha looked away.

Daniel answered for her.

"A property authorization. It supposedly gave her permission to negotiate a sale or refinancing.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"You told him I had authorized this?""

Daniel nodded.

"She said you were too busy running your company to handle the paperwork. She said she was helping manage your assets.""

I turned toward Tasha.

"How many people have you told that story to?""

She raised her hands.

"Marcus, you don't understand. I was trying to create something for our future.""

"With my signature?""

"I was going to tell you!""

"When?""

She started crying again.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you receive the money back?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Did you know about the attempted sale?""

"No. I only found out yesterday.""

Daniel took a breath.

"I received a call from the brokerage because someone used my company email as a financial reference. They wanted to verify that I was involved in the proposed transaction.""

I glanced at Nicole.

"Which brokerage?""

She examined the email attached to the listing request.

"Peachtree Residential Group.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's the one.""

I looked back at him.

"What did you tell them?""

"That I knew nothing about the sale and had never authorized anyone to represent me.""

He paused.

"Then I called Tasha.""

Tasha wiped her cheeks.

"You didn't have to involve him.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You involved me when you took my savings.""

He turned toward the guests.

"I've known Marcus for years. I watched him build that company from nothing. I knew he bought this house. I never imagined my own sister would tell me he was trying to steal his own property.""

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Brittany stared at the ground.

I didn't feel victorious.

If anything, I felt exhausted.

I had expected a confrontation with Tasha.

I hadn't expected to discover that she had been using my identity to convince other people to hand her money.

Nicole closed the folder.

"Daniel, I need you to preserve every message, transfer record, and document you received. Don't delete anything.""

Daniel nodded.

"I brought everything.""

"Good. Please send me copies.""

Tasha suddenly stepped between them.

"You're both treating me like some kind of criminal!""

Nicole's expression remained professional.

"Nobody here is making a legal determination. We're documenting what happened.""

Tasha turned toward me.

"Marcus, please. Can we just talk?""

I looked at her.

"We've been talking for four years.""

"I love you.""

"Then why did you tell everyone I was living off you?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Why did you try to borrow against my house?""

Silence.

"Why did you use my signature?""

Her shoulders began shaking.

"Because I was tired!""

I stared at her.

"Tired of what?""

"Of feeling like I had nothing!""

The words came out louder than she intended.

Everyone heard them.

She continued, her voice breaking.

"You have your company. You have this beautiful house. You have employees who respect you.

You have money coming in. And I have to stand beside you while everybody thinks I'm just your girlfriend!""

I looked at her for a long moment.

"So you wanted half of everything?""

"I wanted security.""

"You wanted security by putting me at risk.""

She shook her head.

"That's not fair.""

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Tasha, you told me Marcus had agreed.""

She turned toward him.

"Not now, Daniel!""

He lowered his eyes.

I picked up the house keys from Nicole's folder.

"Nicole, what are my options?""

She answered carefully.

"First, we secure the property. Second, we notify the relevant institutions that the disputed documents weren't authorized by you. Third, we preserve the evidence and assess the appropriate legal steps.""

I nodded.

"Do that.""

Tasha looked frightened.

"You're not kicking me out tonight, are you?""

I glanced at the house.

At the windows I had paid to replace.

The kitchen I had renovated after working twelve-hour days.

The deck where I had once imagined celebrating our wedding.

Then I looked at her.

"I haven't made every decision yet.""

She exhaled.

For the first time that evening, she seemed relieved.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

He reached into his folder again.

"Marcus, there's one more thing.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

"What now?""

He pulled out a printed text conversation.

"Last night, Tasha sent me a message. She wanted me to confirm something about the property before the sale.""

Nicole took the paper.

She read the first message.

Then the second.

Her expression changed.

"What is it?"" I asked.

She turned the page toward me.

There were two sentences highlighted in yellow.

The first read:

Once Marcus is out of the picture, everything will be easier.

The second read:

The buyer doesn't need to know the full situation until the deposit clears.

I read them twice.

Then I looked at Daniel.

"Who was the buyer?""

Daniel swallowed.

"I don't know his full identity.""

He pointed to a name in the conversation.

"But I know who introduced them.""

I followed his finger.

The name was unfamiliar.

Until I saw the phone number beneath it.

It belonged to someone I knew.

Someone who had worked with my company.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly how much my property was worth.

And suddenly, I understood that Tasha hadn't been working alone.
