Chapter 9: The Aunt Who Knew Too Much

For one second, Rebecca seemed to forget where she was.

Her gaze remained fixed on the note in my hand.

Then she looked up, and the familiar warmth returned to her face so quickly that I might have doubted what I'd heard if the words hadn't been so clear.

“Mark,” she said softly, “what are you doing with that?””

I held the note between us.

“You tell me.””

She glanced toward the nurses' station.

Several people were moving through the corridor, carrying charts and speaking quietly. Rebecca lowered her voice.

“This isn't the place.””

“You're right. It's a hospital. Our daughter is being treated here, and someone has been threatening our family.””

Her face stiffened.

“I just heard about Maya. I've been trying to reach Claire for hours.””

“Who told you she was here?””

“Claire did.””

“When?””

“Earlier.””

“Before or after someone sent me a photograph of Maya asleep in her bedroom?””

Rebecca went completely still.

The paper bag slipped slightly in her hand.

“What photograph?””

I watched her carefully.

“The one taken inside our house. The one someone used to threaten me.””

Rebecca's eyes flicked toward the examination-room door.

Then she looked back at me.

“You need to calm down.””

I nearly laughed.

That was exactly what Claire had said when I'd questioned the medication.

Every time I asked a direct question, someone told me to calm down.

Every time I asked for evidence, someone told me I didn't understand.

And every time I tried to protect Maya, someone acted as if I were the one causing trouble.

“Did you write this note?”” I asked.

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

“Maya recognized your handwriting.””

“Maya is frightened and sick. She might be confused.””

The sentence hit me like a slap.

I stepped closer.

“Do not use my daughter's illness against her.””

Rebecca's eyes widened.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then explain why you said she wasn't supposed to find the note.””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it again.

I held her gaze.

“I'm going to ask you one more time. Did you put this note in Maya's backpack?””

Rebecca looked away.

“No.””

Her answer came too quickly.

Before I could respond, Detective Brooks approached from the corridor.

“Mr. Bennett?””

I turned toward her.

“This is Rebecca Shaw. Claire's sister.””

The detective introduced herself, then asked Rebecca why she'd come to the hospital.

“To see my niece.””

“Did anyone ask you to bring her anything?””

“No.””

“Have you been to the Bennett residence recently?””

Rebecca nodded.

“I was there last weekend.””

“For what purpose?””

“To drop off some things for Maya.””

“What things?””

“Clothes. School supplies. Nothing unusual.””

“Did you enter Maya's bedroom?””

Rebecca's expression tightened.

“Yes. I helped her organize her wardrobe.””

“When was the last time you were in that room?””

“Last Saturday.””

I looked at Detective Brooks.

The photograph on my phone had appeared to show Maya asleep three nights earlier.

Rebecca had access to the room.

She had access to the house.

She had a spare key.

And now a threatening message had arrived.

The pieces were not proof, but they were enough to make my skin crawl.

Detective Brooks continued questioning her.

“Do you have access to the home's security system?””

“No.””

“Do you know the access code?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“I used to know it.””

“When was that?””

“Several months ago.””

“Was your access revoked?””

“I don't know.””

I opened the security app again.

The access list showed my profile, Claire's profile, and Daniel's temporary code.

But beneath them was a disabled account.

*R. SHAW — DISABLED SEPTEMBER 25.*

I turned the phone toward the detective.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

Then she whispered, “Claire said she'd removed my access.””

“When did she tell you that?”” Detective Brooks asked.

“Two weeks ago.””

I frowned.

“Why would she remove your access?””

Rebecca opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

I felt anger rising again.

“Rebecca.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to help Claire.””

I stared at her.

“With what?””

“The debt.””

I shook my head slowly.

“Of course.””

Rebecca wiped her cheeks.

“You don't understand how bad things were. Claire was falling apart. She couldn't sleep. She was terrified Daniel would destroy her life.””

“So you helped her hide it from me?””

“I thought she could fix it.””

“By giving our daughter tablets?””

Rebecca recoiled.

“I never gave Maya any tablets!””

“Then why are you afraid of that note?””

She shook her head.

“Because I know what Daniel is capable of.””

Detective Brooks lifted a hand.

“Let's slow down. Tell me what you know about Daniel Mercer.””

Rebecca swallowed.

“He was helping Claire with her debt. He said he had access to a private financing arrangement that could save the house.””

“Did you meet him?””

“Several times.””

“Where?””

“At Claire's house.””

I felt a chill pass through me.

“Were you there when he gave her the tablets?””

Rebecca looked at the floor.

“I saw him bring a package.””

“What was inside?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you ask?””

“He said they were part of a private medical program.””

“Did you verify that?””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

It was the same excuse.

The same blind trust.

The same willingness to let someone else decide what was happening to Maya.

“What happened to the package?”” Detective Brooks asked.

“Claire took it upstairs.””

“Did you see her give Maya anything?””

“No.””

“Did you know Maya was getting sick?””

Rebecca nodded faintly.

“She told me her stomach hurt when I called her last week.””

“What did you say?””

“I told her to tell her mom.””

“And did you contact Mark?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

She looked directly at me.

“Because Claire begged me not to.””

I stared at her.

“She's my daughter too.””

Rebecca began crying.

“I know.””

“No, I don't think you do.””

My voice sounded strange even to me.

“You had my phone number. You knew our daughter was sick. You knew there were unidentified tablets in the house. And you decided to keep quiet because my wife asked you to?””

Rebecca covered her face.

“I thought it would be over before you ever found out.””

I stepped away.

That was becoming the refrain of our family's destruction.

Everyone thought it would be over before I found out.

Everyone thought they could cross one more line, hide one more document, tell one more lie, and eventually restore the life we had before.

But Maya had been the one living with the consequences.

Detective Brooks moved Rebecca to a quieter part of the corridor to continue the interview.

I stayed near the examination-room door.

Through the window, I could see Maya talking to Dr. Patel. Her cheeks had more color than they had when we'd first arrived, though she still looked exhausted.

I wanted to go inside.

I wanted to hold her and tell her nobody could hurt her again.

But I couldn't make that promise yet.

Not until I understood how many people had been involved.

My phone rang.

Daniel Mercer.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered his role in the original agreement, the payments to Mercer Advisory Services, and the fact that someone had been using documents with my forged signature.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

“At my office.””

“Don't leave.””

A pause.

“What's happened?””

“Rebecca Shaw is at the hospital. She says you've been working with her and Claire.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “You shouldn't be talking to Rebecca without understanding her involvement.””

I felt a cold certainty settle inside me.

“You know she's here.””

“Claire told me.””

“When?””

“Earlier.””

“Before or after someone threatened my daughter?””

He stopped speaking.

That was the first time I'd ever heard Daniel Mercer struggle to find words.

I looked toward Detective Brooks.

She was watching me now, her expression alert.

“Daniel,” I said, “did you send me the photograph of Maya?””

“No.””

“Did you arrange for someone to enter my house?””

“No.””

“Did you supply the tablets?””

Another pause.

Then he said, “I didn't supply medication.””

It was a careful answer.

Not an answer to the question I'd asked.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Did you know Maya was taking tablets?””

He exhaled.

“I knew Claire had been following a regimen Richard recommended.””

“Did you verify it?””

“I was not responsible for the medical side of the arrangement.””

“Did you know it could make her sick?””

“Mark, listen to me. Claire was in serious financial difficulty. I was trying to prevent her from losing everything.””

“By forging my signature?””

“I didn't forge your signature.””

“Then why did you send me a document that contained it?””

“I sent you the version I received. I believed the paperwork had been completed properly.””

“Who gave you that version?””

Daniel was silent.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “Rebecca.””

The name felt like another door slamming shut.

“She sent you the authorization?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“September twenty-fourth.””

The day after the document had supposedly been signed.

“Why?””

“She told me she'd found a signed copy among Claire's paperwork and wanted me to forward it to the financing company.””

I looked toward Rebecca.

She was still sitting with Detective Brooks, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

“Did you ask her where it came from?””

“She said Claire had signed it with you.””

“And you believed her?””

“Yes.””

“Did you ever meet me in person?””

“No.””

“Then you had no basis to believe the signature was mine.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“I wasn't acting as a handwriting examiner.””

“You were handling a document that gave my wife control over my property and my daughter's medical decisions.””

“I didn't understand that the document had been altered.””

“Yet you sent it to the financing company.””

“I forwarded it for review.””

I took a slow breath.

“Daniel, I'm going to ask you something, and I need you to answer honestly. Who is Richard Cole's partner?””

He didn't respond immediately.

Then he said, “I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You do.””

“Richard works with several financing groups.””

“Which one supplied the tablets?””

“I don't know.””

“Who sent the threat?””

“I don't know.””

“Then tell me something you do know.””

The line remained silent.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Rebecca has a key to a storage unit in Westbridge. If you want to understand the arrangement, you need to find what's inside.””

My heart hammered.

“What's inside the storage unit?””

“Original paperwork. Receipts. A copy of Claire's old loan agreement.””

“And the tablets?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Can't, or won't?””

“Both.””

Before I could ask another question, Daniel ended the call.

I stood motionless for several seconds.

Then I walked toward Detective Brooks.

She listened while I repeated everything he'd said.

When I mentioned the storage unit, she immediately asked whether Daniel had provided an address.

“No.””

“Did you ask him?””

“He hung up.””

She nodded.

“We can investigate the lead, but we need to establish its relevance and follow the proper process.””

She turned toward the officer beside her and instructed him to record the new information.

Then she looked at Rebecca.

“Mrs. Shaw, do you have access to a storage unit in Westbridge?””

Rebecca's face drained of color.

She stared at Detective Brooks.

Then at me.

Finally, she whispered, “I never told Daniel about that.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“About what?””

Rebecca's hands began shaking.

“The unit was supposed to be empty.””

“What is inside it?””

She swallowed.

“A box of Claire's old papers.””

“Only papers?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she closed her eyes.

“No.””

I waited.

“Tell me what else is there.””

She looked at me with an expression I had never seen on her face before.

Pure, helpless fear.

“The original bottles,” she whispered.

“The ones Daniel brought to the house.””

The corridor seemed to fall silent.

Detective Brooks immediately asked where the storage unit was located and who held the key.

Rebecca gave her an address and explained that she had rented the unit under her own name several months earlier. She claimed Daniel had asked her to keep certain documents there because he was concerned the financing company might inspect the house.

I watched her while she spoke.

She was still leaving things out.

I could feel it.

“Why did you agree?”” I asked.

Rebecca looked down.

“Because Daniel told me the arrangement would protect Claire.””

“Protect her from what?””

“He said if the debt became public, Claire could lose her job. He said the house could be taken, and you would leave her.””

I stared at her.

“And you thought the solution was to help him hide medication?””

“I didn't know what the medication was at first!””

“When did you find out?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Two weeks ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Two weeks ago?””

She nodded.

“What happened?””

“Claire called me after Maya threw up at school. She was terrified. She said the tablets were making Maya sick and that she wanted to stop.””

“What did you tell her?””

Rebecca began crying harder.

“I told her to stop.””

“And did she?””

“No.””

The answer came out as a whisper.

I gripped the back of a chair.

“What did you do after that?””

“I called Daniel.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought he could explain what was happening.””

“And what did he say?””

Rebecca looked at Detective Brooks.

Then she looked at me.

“He said Claire couldn't stop until the authorization was approved. He said everything would collapse if she changed the plan.””

My hands went cold.

“He told you our daughter should keep taking the tablets even though she was getting sick?””

Rebecca nodded.

I couldn't speak.

For years, I had trusted Claire's sister with my child.

I'd let Rebecca take Maya to the park, pick her up from school, and keep her overnight when Claire and I needed a break.

I'd welcomed her into our home without ever wondering whether she'd use that trust to conceal something dangerous.

Now she was telling me she'd known Maya was sick and had helped keep the truth from me.

Detective Brooks asked Rebecca to accompany her for further questioning. Rebecca didn't resist.

As she stood, she turned toward me.

“Mark, I know you hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don't have time to hate you.””

Her face crumpled.

“I made a terrible mistake.””

“You made more than one.””

“I know.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You know now that we found out.””

She lowered her head.

An officer escorted her toward a private interview room.

I remained beside the nurses' station, staring at the address Rebecca had provided.

The storage unit could contain the missing evidence.

The original bottles.

The paperwork.

Perhaps even proof of who had supplied the tablets.

My phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from Daniel.

It contained a single photograph.

The image showed a small metal storage-unit door.

Someone had written a number on it in black marker.

*B-214.*

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*DON'T OPEN IT. YOUR WIFE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE WHO WILL LOSE EVERYTHING.*

I looked up.

Detective Brooks was speaking to her colleague, arranging the next steps.

Maya was waiting for me inside the examination room.

And somewhere, behind a locked metal door, lay the evidence that might finally explain why my wife had been willing to sacrifice our daughter's health to save herself.

I walked into Maya's room and took her hand.

“Dad?”” she whispered.

“I'm here.””

“Did Aunt Rebecca do it?””

I sat beside her bed.

“I don't know everything yet, sweetheart.””

She studied my face.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out something I'd never seen before.

A small, folded photograph.

“There's something else,” she whispered.

“I found this in Mom's desk before we came to the hospital.””

I opened it.

The picture showed Claire standing outside a building with Daniel Mercer.

Beside them was a third person.

A woman with dark hair, wearing a white coat and holding a small brown bottle.

On the back, Maya had written three words in her careful handwriting.

*THE WOMAN FROM SCHOOL.*

I stared at the photograph.

Then I looked at my daughter.

“Who is she, Maya?””

My daughter gripped my hand.

“The woman who told Mom which pills to give me.””

May you like

She swallowed hard.

“Dad, she's my school nurse.””
