Chapter 6: My Brother's Final Betrayal

Ethan arrived at my house at 7:40 that evening.

He didn't knock.

He used the spare key I had given him years earlier.

I heard the front door open, followed by the familiar sound of his shoes against the hardwood floor.

“Marcus?””

His voice carried the same warmth I remembered from childhood.

But now I could see the man producing it.

He was wearing a navy suit, an expensive watch, and the silver wedding ring he had never removed since marrying his college sweetheart.

When he entered the living room and saw me sitting in my wheelchair, he stopped.

Then his eyes widened.

“Brother.””

He rushed toward me.

I watched him carefully.

His face showed surprise, relief, and something else.

Fear.

“You can see?””

I nodded.

“Apparently.””

He gripped my shoulders.

“That's incredible!””

I didn't move.

He looked around the room.

“Where's Vanessa?””

“Talking to the police.””

His hands slipped from my shoulders.

“Why?””

I studied his expression.

“That's a strange question.””

“What's going on?””

“You tell me.””

Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down.

He was three years younger than me.

When our father died, Ethan had been fifteen and I had been eighteen. I had promised my mother I would look after him.

I worked two jobs while attending college.

I paid his tuition.

I helped him buy his first apartment.

When he started his consulting business, I introduced him to my clients.

I had never asked him to repay a single dollar.

Now I was looking at the person Vanessa claimed had helped plan my murder.

“Marcus, why are you staring at me?””

“I'm trying to remember when you stopped being my brother.””

His face tightened.

“What?””

“Did you arrange my accident?””

He looked genuinely offended.

“Are you serious?””

“Answer me.””

“Of course not!””

“Did you introduce Vanessa to Adrian?””

His eyes shifted.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Adrian is an old business contact.””

“Not what I asked.””

Ethan stood and walked toward the window.

“Vanessa is manipulating you. She's trying to protect herself.””

“She's already told the police about you.””

He turned sharply.

“What did she say?””

I smiled faintly.

“Interesting. You seem more interested in what she said than in whether I'm okay.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“Marcus, listen. You have no idea how complicated things became after your accident.””

“Then explain.””

He sat down again.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he leaned forward.

“You were gone.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“You were in a coma. The doctors told us your chances weren't good. Your company was falling apart, your employees were leaving, and your creditors were calling.””

“So?””

“Someone had to make decisions.””

“I had a board of directors.””

“They weren't doing anything!””

“That's not your responsibility.””

Ethan laughed without humor.

“That's always been your problem. You think everything belongs to you because you built it.””

I felt a chill.

“Because I did build it.””

“You built it with our father's money.””

“Our father left us a small insurance payment. I turned it into a business.””

“And you never let me forget that.””

I stared at him.

Had he really been carrying that resentment for years?

“I gave you shares,” I said.

“Minority shares.””

“You had a salary.””

“A salary you controlled.””

“You had access to the company accounts.””

“Not the main accounts.””

I shook my head.

“So this was about money?””

Ethan leaned back.

“It was about fairness.””

“Fairness?””

“You had everything. The house. The company.

The investments. Even after the accident, you still owned everything while Vanessa and I were left trying to manage the mess.””

I stared at him.

“Vanessa?””

He looked away.

There it was.

The connection.

“You were involved with her too?””

His expression changed.

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“Then why did you say Vanessa and I?””

He stood again.

“Because I was helping her!””

I laughed bitterly.

“Helping her steal my insurance money?””

Ethan slammed his hand against the table.

“You were supposed to be dead!””

The words came out before he could stop them.

Silence swallowed the room.

Daniel, who had been sitting in the adjoining study with his phone recording the conversation, appeared in the doorway.

Ethan looked toward him.

“What the hell?””

Daniel stepped into the living room.

“Mr. Hale, I believe you've said enough.””

Ethan turned to me.

“You set me up?””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I gave you a chance to tell the truth.””

He began pacing.

“You don't understand what Adrian did. He promised everything would be handled. He said the accident would make you disappear from the business, and we would finally have a chance to restructure everything.””

“Did you know he was going to damage my brakes?””

Ethan stopped.

His silence answered the question.

“Did you pay him?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the truck?””

He swallowed.

“I didn't arrange the truck.””

I leaned forward.

“But you knew.””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“Adrian told me the brakes would fail. He said you'd crash somewhere remote, and by the time anyone found you, it would look like an accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew I could die.””

“I thought you'd be injured!””

“That's supposed to make it better?””

He looked desperate.

“Marcus, I never wanted you dead. I wanted you out of the company.””

“Then why did you let them report me dead?””

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mr. Hale, the police are on their way.””

Ethan looked toward the door.

Then he suddenly reached into his jacket.

Daniel moved immediately.

“Keep your hands where I can see them!””

Ethan froze.

He slowly removed a small envelope.

“I'm not armed.””

He placed it on the table.

“Marcus, there's something you need to see.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What is it?””

“The original brake inspection report.””

Daniel picked it up.

Inside were three pages.

The first showed the original mechanical inspection.

The second contained a photograph of the damaged brake line.

The third was a handwritten agreement between Adrian and someone identified only by the initials E.H.

My brother's initials.

But there was something else.

A handwritten date.

The date was three days before the accident.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why are you giving me this?””

He sat down slowly.

“Because Adrian is planning to leave the country tonight.””

Daniel immediately took out his phone.

“Where?””

“Private airfield outside the city. He has a flight arranged.””

“Why didn't you tell the police earlier?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“You were afraid of prison?””

He nodded.

“And now?””

He looked down.

“Now I'm afraid Adrian will kill me.””

Daniel called Detective Collins and gave him the information.

Ethan remained seated, his hands shaking.

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me already did.

But another part remembered the little boy who used to sleep on my bedroom floor during thunderstorms because he was afraid of lightning.

That boy was gone.

And I wasn't sure whether he had ever really existed in the man sitting before me.

A few minutes later, Detective Collins called Daniel back.

His expression changed as he listened.

“What do you mean he's already there?””

He looked at me.

Then he ended the call.

“Marcus, the police reached the airfield. Adrian's car is parked outside the hangar.””

I leaned forward.

“Have they found him?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then where is he?””

Detective Collins called again.

This time, Daniel put the phone on speaker.

The detective's voice was urgent.

“Mr. Hale, we've found something inside the hangar.””

“What?””

“A private aircraft. The flight plan lists Adrian Cole as the passenger.””

“Where is he?””

There was a pause.

Then Detective Collins spoke again.

“There's a second passenger.””

“Who?””

The detective hesitated.

“Someone using your name, Marcus.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Ethan.

He had gone completely pale.

Then he whispered something I would never forget.

“That's impossible. You were supposed to be the only one who died.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan stared at the floor.

And then the detective's voice came through the phone again.

“Mr. Hale, we need you to come to the station immediately. We've discovered evidence that suggests someone has been using your identity to move money overseas.””

Daniel looked at me.

I looked at my brother.

And suddenly, I understood.

Adrian hadn't simply planned an escape.

He had planned to leave the country wearing my name.

May you like

But why would he need my identity?

And what exactly had he done with the five million dollars?
