Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The phone kept ringing inside the house.
Claire stood frozen on the driveway, staring at the front door as if something terrible were waiting behind it.
“Who is Richard Hale?”” I demanded.
She shook her head.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain it to me.””
“Daniel, please. Not here.””
“You told me Sarah's father died before we met.””
“He was supposed to be dead to us.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
Claire pressed both hands against her temples. Her expensive bracelet slid down her wrist, catching the afternoon sunlight.
“You have no idea what he did to Sarah.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the upstairs windows.
“Not while Lily is home.””
I almost laughed.
For six years, Claire had decided which truths my daughter deserved to hear. Now she wanted to choose when I could learn the truth about my own family.
“I'm done letting you control this conversation.””
I walked past her and entered the house.
The ringing was coming from the kitchen.
A black smartphone lay on the counter beside the bowl of strawberries Lily hadn't finished that morning. The screen displayed an unfamiliar number.
Claire hurried in behind me.
“Don't answer that.””
I picked up the phone.
“Why?””
“Because it could be anyone.””
“Then it shouldn't matter if I answer.””
She reached for it, but I stepped away.
“Hello?””
A man's voice answered.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“My name is Richard Hale.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Claire covered her mouth.
Richard continued speaking in a calm, measured voice.
“I believe you've recently discovered some documents concerning my granddaughter.””
“Your granddaughter?””
“Lily.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Where have you been for twelve years?””
“Trying to correct a mistake that has lasted far too long.””
“What mistake?””
“The mistake of trusting the wrong person with my daughter's final wishes.””
I looked at Claire.
She was shaking her head, silently begging me to end the call.
“Are you alive?”” I asked.
There was a brief pause.
“I assure you, Mr. Carter, I am very much alive.””
“Why did everyone tell me you were dead?””
“Because someone needed you to believe I could never come forward.””
Claire suddenly snatched the phone from my hand.
“Richard, stop this!”” she shouted.
“You have no right to interfere!””
His voice remained steady.
“Hello, Claire. It's been a long time.””
“You promised you would stay away.””
“I promised to stay away until Lily was safe.””
“She is safe!””
“Is she?””
Claire's face reddened.
“You have no idea what I've done for that family.””
“I know exactly what you've done,” Richard replied.
“And so will Daniel, once he sees the original documents.””
Claire ended the call.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then I held out my hand.
“Give me the phone.””
She stared at it.
“Daniel, please.””
“Now.””
She placed it on the counter.
I picked it up and called the number back, but the call went directly to voicemail.
Claire sank into a chair.
“You need to understand something,” she said.
“Richard Hale is a dangerous man.””
“Then why didn't you tell me he was alive?””
“Because Sarah spent her entire life trying to escape him.””
“Escape him from what?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“He controlled everything. Her money. Her education.
Her relationships. He decided who she could marry and where she could live. When she met you, she finally had something that belonged to her.””
“And you knew all this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you hide her inheritance?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
She looked at me.
“Of what would happen when he came back.””
A small sound came from the staircase.
Lily stood halfway down, clutching the railing.
“Dad?””
I turned immediately.
“Sweetheart, how long have you been there?””
“Long enough.””
Claire stood.
“Lily, go to your room.””
“No.””
The single word startled both of us.
Lily descended the remaining steps, her face pale.
“You keep telling me to leave whenever you talk about Mom.””
Claire's mouth tightened.
“This is an adult conversation.””
“It's about my mother.””
“Lily—”
“Did Grandpa really die?””
Claire fell silent.
Lily looked at me.
“Dad, is Mom's father alive?””
I walked toward her and knelt.
“I don't know everything yet, sweetheart. But a man named Richard called me. He says he's your grandfather.””
She stared at me.
“Grandpa Richard?””
“You knew his name?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“Mom had a photograph of him. She kept it inside her jewelry box. Claire told me it was an old picture of a man who died a long time ago.””
Claire looked away.
Lily's voice trembled.
“Why would she lie about that?””
No one answered.
Then Lily turned to Claire.
“Did you know he was alive the whole time?””
Claire stepped forward.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From my own grandfather?””
“You don't understand what he did to your mother.””
“Then tell me!””
Lily's voice cracked.
It was the first time I'd heard her shout at Claire.
Claire reached for her arm, but Lily stepped back.
“Don't touch me.””
The words hung in the air.
Claire looked at me as if she expected me to intervene.
I didn't.
Lily wiped her cheeks.
“Did you take my money?””
Claire went completely still.
“Who told you that?””
“I heard you talking to Dad. Did you?””
“Lily, the money was complicated.””
“That's not an answer.””
I felt a strange mixture of pride and heartbreak.
My daughter had spent years making herself smaller to keep the peace. Now she was standing in the middle of our kitchen, demanding an answer she deserved.
Claire finally spoke.
“I used some of the money to support this family.””
Lily stared at her.
“Did you use it to buy Mason's gaming console?””
Claire's silence answered the question.
“And Jake's shoes?””
“Lily, you need to understand—”
“And my shirt?””
Claire looked startled.
“What?””
“Did you buy my shirt with my money?””
I had no answer for the way Lily's face changed when she asked that question.
It wasn't anger.
It was humiliation.
She turned away before either of us could see her cry.
“I'm going to pack my things.””
I followed her upstairs.
Inside her bedroom, she pulled a small suitcase from beneath her bed and began folding her clothes into it.
“Sweetheart, you don't have to go anywhere.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you packing?””
She folded her pink pajamas and placed them at the bottom of the suitcase.
“Because if I stay here, she'll keep saying I'm the problem.””
I sat beside her.
“You are not the problem.””
“Then why does everyone keep treating me like I am?””
I couldn't answer.
She looked at me with red, swollen eyes.
“Dad, I don't want the money.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“I don't want the money if it means everyone has to fight. I don't want a grandfather I don't know. I don't want Claire to hate me more.””
I took her hands.
“You don't have to earn the right to be loved, Lily. Not by me. Not by anyone.””
She looked down.
“Then why did I spend six years trying?””
That question broke something inside me.
I pulled her into my arms, and she finally began to cry.
When she had calmed down, I promised her we would stay somewhere else for a few days.
I packed our bags, called Rebecca, and arranged for Lily to stay with her while I met Melissa the following morning.
As I carried the last suitcase downstairs, Claire stood in the hallway.
“You're taking her away from me?””
“I'm taking her somewhere she can feel safe.””
“She is safe here!””
“Then why is she afraid to eat strawberries?””
Claire's expression crumpled.
For a moment, I thought she might finally apologize.
Instead, she lifted her chin.
“If you leave tonight, don't expect me to sit here waiting for you to come back.””
I looked at the woman I had married.
“I don't expect anything from you anymore.””
I took Lily's hand and walked out.
We had almost reached the car when my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered.
“Daniel, this is Richard again. I apologize for the interruption earlier.””
“What do you want?””
“To meet my granddaughter.””
“Not until I know the truth.””
“Fair enough.””
He paused.
“Then let me tell you something Sarah wanted you to know before she died.””
I stopped beside the car.
“What?””
“Lily was never supposed to inherit that money alone.””
I looked through the window at my daughter, who was sitting in the passenger seat with her suitcase on her lap.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard's next words made my blood run cold.
“Sarah established that trust because she knew someone in your family would eventually try to take everything from her child.””
He lowered his voice.
“And Daniel, the person she feared most wasn't Claire.””
May you like
“Who was it?””
“Your father.””
