Chapter 5: The Voice on the Recording
I didn't speak for several seconds.
I could hear the attorney breathing on the other end of the line. Somewhere behind him, a printer hummed and a door closed.
"A recorded statement?"" I finally asked.
"Yes, sir.""
"From Maya?""
"That's correct.""
"How old was she when it was recorded?""
"I'd need to review the file to confirm the date.""
"Then review it.""
The words came out sharper than I'd intended.
Daniel Brooks remained calm.
"Mr. Bennett, I understand this is upsetting. However, your wife has asked us to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels.""
"My wife has also produced a document bearing my daughter's signature that Maya says she never gave.""
"That is a separate issue.""
"Not to me.""
I looked at Maya. She was sitting rigidly beside Devin, her face drained of color.
"Send me the recording and every document you're relying on," I said.
"Do not contact my daughter directly. Any further communication can go through me or my attorney.""
"Your wife has legal representation. You should obtain your own.""
"I intend to.""
I ended the call.
Renee immediately pulled out a chair.
"What happened?""
I explained.
When I finished, she stared at the phone in disbelief.
"A recorded statement from Maya? How could Vanessa possibly have that?""
"I don't know.""
Maya's fingers began twisting the hem of her sweatshirt.
"I think I know.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She took a shaky breath.
"Last winter, Vanessa started asking me questions about Dad's work. She wanted to know whether he had ever borrowed money from Mom's trust.""
I frowned.
"Why would she ask you that?""
"She said she was worried about the family. She told me you had been under a lot of pressure and might have used some of the money to pay household bills.""
"I never took money from your trust.""
"I know that now.""
Her voice was small.
"But I didn't know what to think then. She showed me bank statements with numbers highlighted in red. She said the account was losing money because you were irresponsible.""
Renee leaned forward.
"Did you see the account number on those statements?""
Maya nodded.
"I think so.""
"Did you keep them?""
"No. Vanessa took them back.""
I rubbed my forehead.
For months, my wife had been constructing a story in which I was careless with money and Maya was too emotional to understand what was happening.
If she could persuade Maya to doubt me, she might persuade a court that I was unfit to manage the trust.
But why?
What did Vanessa want so badly that she'd risk destroying our family to get it?
"Tell me about the recording," I said gently.
Maya looked at the table.
"She took me to her friend's house one afternoon. She said we were going to discuss college and my future. There was a woman there I didn't know.""
"Was it an attorney?""
"I don't think so. She introduced herself as a financial adviser.""
Maya pressed her palms against her knees.
"Vanessa asked me whether I trusted you to make decisions about my money. I said I did. Then she asked whether I'd ever felt that you chose your marriage over me.""
My throat tightened.
"What did you say?""
"I said sometimes I felt like you were too busy to notice when I was upset.""
I looked away.
The admission hurt because it was true.
Maya had spent years trying not to inconvenience me, and I'd often mistaken her silence for independence.
She continued.
"Then Vanessa asked whether I'd ever wanted to live somewhere else. I said I didn't know. I was upset because we'd argued about Mom's birthday.""
"What happened next?""
"She asked me to explain why I felt uncomfortable at home. I talked about things that had happened between us. She kept asking questions until I started crying.""
Maya's voice cracked.
"Then she told me to say the same things again, but more clearly, because she wanted to make sure she understood.""
Renee's expression darkened.
"Did you know you were being recorded?""
Maya shook her head.
"No. I thought she was taking notes.""
I sat back.
A statement made by a distressed teenager during a private conversation was not proof that she had agreed to surrender her inheritance. But if Vanessa had edited the recording or presented it out of context, she could use it to create the impression that Maya had accused me of wrongdoing.
"Did you ever say you wanted me removed as trustee?"" I asked.
"No.""
"Did you ever say I'd stolen your money?""
"Never.""
She looked directly at me.
"Dad, I swear.""
I reached across the table and held her hand.
"I believe you.""
Her face crumpled.
She began crying, and I moved beside her, holding her while Devin rubbed her back.
After a few minutes, she whispered, "I thought you would be angry if you heard what I said.""
"Why?""
"Because I said you weren't always there for me.""
I closed my eyes.
"Maya, you were allowed to be hurt. You were allowed to be angry. You were allowed to tell the truth about how you felt.""
"But what if she uses it against you?""
"Then we'll show people the whole truth.""
Renee stood and went to the kitchen counter.
"I'm calling my friend Patricia. She's a family attorney. She won't represent you if there's a conflict, but she can point us in the right direction.""
While Renee made the call, Devin took Maya into the living room.
I remained at the table, staring at the forged-looking signature and Lauren's letter.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
I tried to handle this privately. You chose to humiliate me. Don't blame me for what happens next.
Another message followed.
If you want to protect Maya, stop digging into things you don't understand.
I took screenshots and saved them.
Then I called my bank.
I wanted to check whether Vanessa had ever been granted access to any of our accounts. The representative confirmed that she was an authorized user on our joint household account, but not on Maya's trust.
That distinction mattered.
I asked for the last twelve months of statements.
As I reviewed the transactions on my phone, a series of repeated payments caught my attention.
Four thousand dollars.
Then another four thousand.
Then three thousand five hundred.
The payments were listed as transfers to a company called Westbridge Advisory Services.
I recognized the name.
Vanessa had mentioned Westbridge months earlier, claiming she had hired them to help us organize our finances before the vacation.
I had assumed it was a budgeting service.
I opened the account history and scrolled back.
The first payment had been made eight months earlier.
The last was less than two weeks ago.
In total, nearly forty thousand dollars had left our joint account.
I called Vanessa.
She answered immediately.
"Andre.""
"What is Westbridge Advisory Services?""
Silence.
Then she said, "Why?""
"Because nearly forty thousand dollars has been transferred from our joint account to that company.""
"They're financial consultants.""
"For what?""
"Family planning.""
"Forty thousand dollars worth?""
"Andre, you don't understand the costs involved.""
"Then explain them.""
She sighed impatiently.
"I was trying to protect our assets. You wouldn't listen to me when I told you we needed to make changes.""
"Did any of that money come from Maya's trust?""
"No.""
"Can you prove that?""
"How dare you accuse me of stealing from a child?""
"I asked you a question.""
Her voice sharpened.
"You've always been willing to believe the worst about me when Maya is involved.""
I looked at the document on the table.
"You submitted a request to change her trust information. You have a document claiming she surrendered her inheritance. And now I've discovered forty thousand dollars in payments to a financial company you never discussed with me.""
"Because you would have said no!""
The words burst out before she could stop herself.
I went completely still.
"Why would I have said no?""
Vanessa's breathing became audible.
Then her voice softened.
"I can't do this over the phone. We need to meet with our attorney.""
"Our attorney?""
"Yes. Tomorrow morning.""
"Send me the address.""
"And Andre?""
"What?""
"If you bring Maya into that room, I will make sure the judge understands exactly what kind of father you've been.""
The line went dead.
I lowered my phone.
Renee returned to the kitchen just as I looked up.
"Patricia says she can recommend a trust-litigation attorney," she said.
"She also said we need to preserve every document and message.""
"Good.""
"What's wrong?""
I showed her the transfers.
Her mouth fell open.
"Forty thousand dollars?""
"To a company Vanessa hired without telling me.""
"Do you think it came from the trust?""
"I don't know yet.""
Renee pulled out the chair beside me.
"Andre, listen to me. Don't accuse her of anything you can't prove. Get the records. Let the attorney examine them.""
"I know.""
But my mind was already racing.
If Vanessa had been moving money out of our household account to pay a company connected to her efforts to gain control of Maya's trust, the transfers might explain why she had become so desperate to remove me.
And if Lauren had discovered Vanessa's financial misconduct years earlier, then the letter wasn't simply a warning.
It was a map.
I called the trust company again and requested an appointment for the following morning. Then I contacted an attorney recommended by Renee's friend and arranged an emergency consultation.
By evening, the house had grown quiet.
Maya sat at the kitchen table, slowly eating a bowl of soup Renee had prepared. Devin sat opposite her, telling her about a disastrous school presentation in an effort to make her smile.
For a moment, they looked like ordinary teenagers again.
Then Maya's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen and went pale.
"What's wrong?"" Devin asked.
She turned the phone toward me.
A video had arrived from an unknown number.
The preview showed Maya sitting in a chair, her face wet with tears, while Vanessa sat beside her.
I pressed play.
Vanessa's voice filled the kitchen.
"Maya, do you believe your father is capable of mismanaging the money your mother left you?""
On the screen, my daughter stared at the floor.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Do you think he sometimes puts his own needs ahead of yours?""
Maya wiped her face.
"Sometimes.""
The video ended.
Maya covered her mouth.
"That's not the whole conversation," she whispered.
"She told me Dad had taken money from me. She told me you were going to lose everything if I didn't help her.""
I looked at the screen again.
The video was only forty-three seconds long.
It had been carefully cut.
May you like
And beneath it was a message from Vanessa.
This is the version the court will see unless you stop.
