Chapter 1: The Man on My Bed

"WHY IS YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND SITTING ON OUR BED?""

My voice thundered through the bedroom, but the silence that followed was somehow louder.

Jordan.

My wife's ex-boyfriend.

Sitting on the very bed where Nia and I had slept together every night for four years.

And my wife was standing beside him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Jordan slowly lifted his head. His expression shifted from surprise to discomfort, as though he had been caught doing something he couldn't explain.

Nia went pale.

"Marcus, calm down!""

She rushed toward me, raising both hands.

I stared at her.

"Calm down?""

"Please. You're making this worse than it is.""

I pointed toward the bed.

"Your ex-boyfriend is sitting in our bedroom, Nia! Explain to me how that's supposed to look normal.""

"We were only talking.""

"Talking?""

"Yes!""

"In our bedroom?""

She crossed her arms.

"You're overreacting.""

That word.

Overreacting.

I almost laughed.

I had spent twelve hours managing a construction project, dealing with angry contractors, fixing problems that weren't even my responsibility, and rushing home because I'd promised my wife we'd have dinner together.

Instead, I found another man sitting on our bed.

Jordan stood up.

"Look, man, there's no reason to get aggressive.""

I took a step forward.

"Don't tell me how to behave in my own house.""

Nia moved between us.

"Marcus, stop it!""

I looked at her.

"Stop what? Asking why another man is in our bedroom?""

Jordan rubbed the back of his neck.

"She called me. I didn't just show up.""

My eyes slowly moved toward my wife.

"You invited him?""

Nia pressed her lips together.

"Nia. Did you invite him here?""

"Yes.""

The answer came quietly.

But it hit harder than a scream.

I looked at Jordan again. His black hoodie was wrinkled, and his shoes were planted on the expensive rug Nia had chosen after our wedding.

He looked completely comfortable.

Like he belonged there.

And that was what disturbed me most.

Two years earlier, I had discovered that Nia was secretly messaging him.

At first, she called it harmless friendship.

Then I read the messages.

Jordan had told her he missed their relationship. He wondered whether she'd made a mistake marrying me.

And Nia had responded with five words.

Sometimes I wonder too.

I remembered sitting at our kitchen table that night, staring at her phone while the dinner I'd prepared went cold.

We argued for hours.

She cried. She apologized. She promised there would never be another secret conversation.

We even attended marriage counseling.

Eventually, I agreed to forgive her.

But we established one boundary.

Jordan would no longer have a private place in our marriage.

No secret meetings.

No hidden messages.

No emotional intimacy disguised as friendship.

And now he was standing in our bedroom.

"After everything we went through," I said quietly, "you brought him into our home?""

Nia's expression hardened.

"I don't need your permission to talk to someone.""

I blinked.

"That's your answer?""

"You can't control who I speak to, Marcus.""

"I'm not trying to control you. I'm asking why you invited the one person we specifically agreed would stay out of our marriage.""

She shook her head.

"You're making assumptions.""

"Then explain what's happening.""

She glanced toward Jordan.

It lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

And so did he.

Jordan looked down at the carpet.

Something was wrong.

"Why are you looking at him?"" I asked.

"I'm not.""

"You just did.""

Jordan cleared his throat.

"Maybe I should leave.""

"That's the first sensible thing you've said.""

Nia grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't go.""

I froze.

She froze too.

Jordan looked at her hand.

Then slowly pulled his arm away.

I stared at my wife.

"Interesting.""

"Marcus, don't.""

"Don't what? Notice that you're asking your ex-boyfriend to stay?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Nothing happened.""

I swallowed.

"Maybe nothing physical happened. But you knew exactly what this would do to me.""

She lowered her head.

I pointed toward the hallway.

"Jordan, leave.""

He picked up his phone.

Nia stepped forward.

"Marcus, this is ridiculous!""

"No. What's ridiculous is that I'm standing in my bedroom arguing about why your ex-boyfriend is here.""

"You can't just throw me out!""

"I'm asking for space. We can discuss everything else when we're not standing in the middle of this.""

She stared at me.

Then Jordan spoke.

"Marcus.""

I turned.

His face had changed.

The nervousness was still there, but something else had replaced it.

Guilt.

"She didn't call me here just to talk.""

Nia spun around.

"Jordan, STOP!""

My stomach tightened.

Jordan looked at her.

"Nia, he deserves to know.""

"Don't you dare!""

I stared between them.

"Know what?""

Neither answered.

I took another step.

"Jordan, tell me why you're here.""

He swallowed.

Then he looked directly into my eyes.

"Because Nia asked me to help her with something. Something she hasn't told you.""

"What something?""

He hesitated.

Nia grabbed his arm again.

"Please. Not like this.""

I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

"Not like what?""

Jordan slowly reached into his hoodie pocket.

He pulled out a small white envelope.

Then he placed it on our bed.

"Marcus," he said, "before you get angry, you need to understand that this started months ago.""

I stared at the envelope.

My wife's face had gone completely white.

And when I saw the name printed on the front, I realized this wasn't just about an old relationship.

May you like

It was about something that had been happening behind my back.

Something involving my money.
