Chapter 5: The Name She Wanted on My House
Melissa asked me not to put her on speakerphone.
I stepped into the upstairs hallway and closed the door to my office.
"Tell me what you know," I said.
"I don't have every detail," she replied.
"But Denise mentioned that Danielle had been talking to someone about refinancing your house.""
"Refinancing?""
"She said Danielle wanted to use the equity to buy a larger property. Somewhere with enough space for her and Kiara to feel settled.""
"The house is already paid off.""
"I know. That's why I thought it sounded strange.""
I leaned against my desk.
"Did Danielle have permission to do this?""
"Not that I know of. She said she needed to get you on board first.""
"And the bank?""
"She asked what would be required to add another person to the property title. I don't know what she was told.""
I rubbed my eyes.
"Who did she want added?""
Melissa hesitated.
"Denise.""
For a moment, I thought I'd misheard.
"Her sister?""
"Yes.""
"Why would she want Denise on my house?""
"That part I don't know. But Denise seemed to think it was already arranged.""
I ended the call after thanking Melissa and promising not to reveal her identity without permission.
Then I opened the folder where I kept the house documents.
The deed was exactly where it belonged. The mortgage had been paid off years ago, and the property was solely in my name.
Danielle had never asked me to change that.
She had, however, asked me to review our estate plans several times. She wanted to know what would happen to the house if I died. She had also suggested that we create a joint account for "major family decisions.""
I'd agreed to discuss the account.
I'd never agreed to transfer ownership of anything.
I checked my email for messages from the bank.
There was one from two weeks earlier.
*Subject: Follow-Up Regarding Your Property Inquiry*
I opened it.
The message thanked me for contacting the bank about a possible home-equity line of credit and asked me to confirm whether I wanted to proceed.
I hadn't contacted them.
I read the email again, then checked the date.
The inquiry had been made using my name and my email address.
A chill ran down my spine.
I called the bank's customer service number and waited through the automated menu. When a representative answered, I explained that I had received a message about an application I hadn't submitted.
"Sir, I can place a note on the account," she said, "but I'll need you to visit a branch with identification to investigate the inquiry fully.""
"Has anything been approved?""
"Nothing has been disbursed. I can't discuss the application details until we verify your identity.""
"Please place a security hold on any new credit request involving my property.""
"I can record your concern and explain the next steps. You'll need to speak with our lending team in person.""
After I hung up, I sat motionless at my desk.
I didn't know whether Danielle had submitted the inquiry herself or whether there was an innocent explanation. I refused to let suspicion become another unsupported accusation.
But I wasn't going to ignore it, either.
I photographed the email and saved it with the screenshots.
Then I heard a knock.
David opened the office door.
"Jordan's asking if he can come downstairs.""
"Of course.""
My brother stepped inside.
"Have you figured out what's going on?""
"Not yet. But I think Danielle may have been trying to make financial arrangements involving the house.""
David's expression darkened.
"That explains a few things.""
"What things?""
"Last month, she asked me whether you had a will.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"She said she wanted to make sure Kiara would be protected if anything happened to you.""
"That's not unreasonable by itself.""
"No, it isn't. But then she asked whether Jordan would inherit the house outright.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What did you tell her?""
"I told her that was between you and your attorney.""
He pulled a chair closer.
"Marcus, I'm not saying she married you for money. I don't know that. But I do know she has been asking questions about your property, your will, and your finances while simultaneously trying to push your son out of your home.""
I looked down at the email.
"Those things may be connected.""
"Then find out before you confront her.""
That was sensible advice.
It was also difficult to follow when I could still hear Jordan asking whether I believed him.
I went downstairs and found him at the kitchen island, eating the sandwich David had brought.
Kiara sat across from him with a mug of tea.
They weren't talking.
"How are you two doing?"" I asked.
Jordan shrugged.
Kiara answered for both of them.
"We're trying.""
I sat beside Jordan.
"Your uncle and I are going to the bank tomorrow morning to clarify something about the house. You don't need to worry about that.""
He frowned.
"Is Danielle trying to take the house?""
"I don't know. I won't accuse her of something until I have the facts.""
He nodded slowly.
"Okay.""
Then he looked at Kiara.
"Can I ask you something?""
She set down her mug.
"Sure.""
"Why did you tell Mom I made you uncomfortable if you didn't think I did?""
Kiara's eyes filled.
"I thought if I agreed with her, she'd stop asking me.""
"Did it work?""
"No.""
Jordan looked away.
"Yeah. I figured.""
"I know I hurt you," she said.
"I can't undo that. I can only stop making it worse.""
He didn't answer.
I let the silence remain.
A few minutes later, Kiara stood.
"I'm going to call Mom.""
"Do you want me to stay?"" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I need to do this myself.""
She walked into the living room and called Danielle.
I could hear only Kiara's side of the conversation.
"Mom, I need you to stop saying Jordan made me feel unsafe.""
A pause.
"No, I'm not changing my story. I'm telling you what I actually feel.""
Another pause.
"Because I love you, Mom. But I can't keep agreeing with something that isn't true.""
Her voice broke.
"I don't want you to leave me. I don't want you to be angry with me. But I can't do this anymore.""
She listened for a long time.
Then her face went pale.
"What do you mean, you already spoke to the bank?""
I stood up.
David looked at me.
Kiara slowly lowered the phone from her ear.
"Mom said she didn't do anything wrong," she whispered.
"She said she was only trying to make sure our future was secure.""
"What exactly did she say about the bank?"" I asked.
Kiara looked at me, frightened.
"She said you already agreed to use the house to help us buy a new one.""
"I never agreed to that.""
"I know.""
"Did she say anything else?""
Kiara swallowed.
"She said Denise was helping her. She said once everything was finalized, we wouldn't have to worry about Jordan's situation anymore.""
I felt the room tilt.
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know.""
My phone rang.
Danielle's name appeared on the screen.
I answered.
"Marcus," she said, her voice unnaturally calm.
"We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"About the future of this family.""
"Then let's start with the bank inquiry made in my name.""
Silence.
A long, unmistakable silence.
Then she said, "I can explain that.""
"Good. Explain it.""
"You won't understand over the phone.""
"Try me.""
She exhaled sharply.
"I was trying to find a way to make this work for everyone. You keep treating that house like it's more important than your marriage.""
"It's my property, Danielle. Did you submit a credit inquiry using my information?""
"I didn't steal anything.""
"That's not an answer.""
She lowered her voice.
"Denise and I were looking at options. We thought if we could move to a bigger house, everyone would have more space.""
"And why was Denise discussing being added to the deed?""
Another silence.
Then Danielle said something that made David stand up from his chair.
"Because she was going to help us qualify for the new property.""
"By putting her name on my house?""
"Temporarily!""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you ask my permission?""
"You would have said no.""
The answer was so blunt that I almost laughed.
"That's why you didn't ask?""
"Marcus, I knew you'd overreact.""
"Overreact? Someone used my information to inquire about borrowing against my house, and you're telling me you deliberately kept it from me because you expected me to refuse?""
"I was trying to build a future for us!""
"By making financial decisions without me?""
She raised her voice.
"By trying to make you understand that I cannot keep living in a house where your son will always come first!""
I looked at Jordan.
He had gone completely still.
I stepped into the hallway so he wouldn't have to hear the rest.
"Jordan has nothing to do with the bank inquiry.""
"Everything has to do with Jordan! You make every decision around him. You bought this house for him.
You arrange your schedule around him. You even planned your retirement around making sure he would have somewhere to live.""
"He's my child.""
"And I'm your wife!""
"Both things can be true.""
"Not in this house!""
Her words echoed through the phone.
Then she said, more quietly, "You have until tomorrow to decide whether you want to build a future with me or keep living in the past.""
I gripped the phone.
"Is that another ultimatum?""
"It's the truth.""
"No, Danielle. It's a demand.""
She hung up.
I stood in the hallway for several seconds before returning to the kitchen.
David looked at me.
"Well?""
I told him what she'd said.
He shook his head.
"You're going to need a lawyer.""
"I know.""
Jordan stared at the table.
"Is she going to take everything?""
I sat beside him.
"No. But I'm going to make sure our finances and property are protected while we figure out what's happened.""
He nodded, though he still looked frightened.
Kiara picked up her phone.
"There's something else I haven't told you.""
I turned toward her.
"What is it?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Mom told me she had already prepared papers for you to sign. She said they would make the house ours.""
"Whose?""
"Hers and mine.""
My stomach dropped.
"Did she show you the papers?""
Kiara nodded.
"They're in her bedroom, in a blue folder.""
"Do you know what they say?""
"No.""
She looked at me, tears gathering in her eyes.
"But I remember the title on the first page.""
"What was it?""
May you like
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Property Transfer Agreement.""
