Chapter 9: The Confession Behind Closed Doors
By sunset, I had stopped trying to convince myself that any of this was a misunderstanding.
The photograph, the note, the financial records, and the documents bearing my forged signature all pointed toward a pattern. But I still didn't know the full story.
And I wasn't going to learn it by guessing.
Robert arranged for the photograph and the note to be examined and documented. He also contacted the investigators reviewing the suspected financial fraud and provided them with copies of the relevant records.
They made it clear that the evidence required further verification.
No one claimed to know what had happened six years earlier.
But the financial investigation was moving forward.
At seven that evening, Danielle called again.
"I need to see you," she said.
"Why?""
"Because there are things you need to hear from me, not from Lauren.""
"Then tell me over the phone.""
"I can't.""
I looked toward the living room, where Jordan sat doing homework with the television turned off.
"Robert will be here.""
"No.""
"Then we don't meet.""
"Marcus, please. I know I've done terrible things. But I need to explain why.""
I closed my eyes.
"Seven-thirty. The living room. Robert stays.""
She arrived ten minutes early.
She looked exhausted. Her makeup was smudged beneath her eyes, and she wore the same coat she'd had on when she left the house the previous afternoon.
When she saw Robert sitting in the armchair, she stopped.
"You said we could talk.""
"We are talking," I replied.
"Robert is here because this involves financial documents and possible fraud.""
Danielle stared at him.
"You're going to turn my marriage into a legal case.""
"You did that when you used my information to open an account without my permission.""
She sat on the couch.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she looked at me.
"I didn't meet you by accident.""
The words landed with brutal simplicity.
I felt as if the room had gone silent around us.
"What does that mean?""
Danielle clasped her hands.
"I knew who you were before we met.""
"How?""
"Ethan.""
I waited.
"He told me about your first wife. He told me about the house, your business, and the money set aside for Jordan.""
My throat tightened.
"How long had he been telling you about me?""
"Several months before our first date.""
I stared at her.
"You researched me before we met?""
"Not exactly.""
"Then explain.""
She began to cry.
"Ethan told me you were a good man. He said you had a stable business, a valuable property, and a son who would eventually inherit everything. He said you needed someone who could help you rebuild your life after losing your wife.""
"And you decided to become that person?""
"At first, I thought it was just advice.""
"At first?""
Danielle wiped her cheeks.
"I had been struggling financially. Kiara's father had stopped helping with some of her expenses, and I was behind on bills. Ethan offered to introduce me to someone who could help me organize my finances.""
Robert interrupted.
"Was that person Ethan himself?""
"Yes.""
"And did he tell you to pursue a relationship with Mr. Brooks?""
Danielle looked at him.
"Not directly.""
"What did he say?""
She swallowed.
"He said Marcus was lonely. He said he needed someone he could trust. He said if I became part of his life, I could help make sure Kiara had a secure future.""
I stared at her.
"Did you love me?""
She looked at me with desperate eyes.
"Yes.""
"Before or after you found out how much money I had?""
She couldn't answer.
I stood and walked to the window.
I remembered our first date. Danielle had laughed at my terrible joke about the restaurant's menu. She had asked about Jordan and listened carefully when I spoke about his mother.
I had thought she understood my grief.
I had thought she respected the way I was trying to raise my son.
Now I wondered which parts of those conversations had been genuine.
"Why did you accuse Jordan?"" I asked.
Danielle lowered her head.
"Because Ethan told me you would never agree to change your estate plan while Jordan was living in the house.""
"So you tried to get rid of him.""
"I didn't think of it that way.""
"How did you think of it?""
She pressed her hands together.
"I thought if Kiara felt uncomfortable, you'd send Jordan to stay with your brother for a while. I thought we'd have time to work things out.""
"You wanted me to believe my son was dangerous.""
"I wanted you to understand that Kiara needed protection too.""
"Protection from what?""
She began crying harder.
"I didn't have a real answer, Marcus. I knew that. But I thought if I pushed hard enough, you'd agree to give her a share of the house.""
Robert leaned forward.
"Did Ethan instruct you to make the accusation?""
Danielle hesitated.
"He told me to create a situation where Marcus would have to reconsider his priorities.""
"Those were his words?""
"Yes.""
"And did he tell you to exaggerate Kiara's discomfort?""
"He said I needed to make the situation serious enough that Marcus couldn't ignore it.""
I felt nauseated.
"Did you tell Kiara what to say?""
Danielle nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did she agree that Jordan had done something inappropriate?""
"No.""
"Then you knew the accusation was misleading.""
She covered her face.
"Yes.""
For a moment, I couldn't look at her.
My son had sat in this very room, trembling with humiliation, while the woman I loved insisted he should be thrown out.
She had watched him ask whether I believed him.
And she had continued.
"Why didn't you stop?"" I asked.
Danielle lowered her hands.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Ethan.""
Robert's expression sharpened.
"Explain.""
Danielle looked toward the front door as if she expected someone to appear.
"Ethan had helped me with the account. He knew about the transfers. He had copies of the documents I'd signed. When I started questioning the plan, he reminded me that I could be blamed for everything.""
"Was he threatening you?"" Robert asked.
"He said if I backed out, he'd tell Marcus that I'd been the one who planned everything. He said he'd make sure I lost Kiara and ended up with nothing.""
I studied her.
"Did you steal my money because he threatened you?""
"No."" She shook her head.
"I made the decision to open the account. I wanted the money for Kiara. Ethan showed me how to do it, but I agreed.""
It was the first honest distinction she had made all evening.
I didn't forgive her.
But at least she had stopped pretending she had no responsibility.
"What about my first wife?"" I asked.
Danielle went completely still.
Robert opened his folder and placed the photograph on the coffee table.
"Mr. Brooks's late wife appears to have known both you and Ethan. She also left a note indicating that she was concerned about financial activity involving Jordan's trust.""
Danielle stared at the photograph.
Then she whispered, "I haven't seen that picture in years.""
"How did you know my first wife?"" I asked.
She took a shaky breath.
"We met through a community fundraiser. Ethan introduced us. He told me she was difficult, that she didn't trust anyone, and that she was making it hard for him to complete some financial paperwork.""
"What paperwork?""
"I never saw it.""
"Did you know he had contacted her about Jordan's trust?""
"Yes.""
The room went cold.
I leaned forward.
"When did you find out?""
"Before she died.""
Robert held up a hand.
"Danielle, be precise. What did you know, and when did you know it?""
She looked at the floor.
"Ethan told me she had refused to cooperate with a financial review. He said she was worried about losing control of the trust. He said she was making accusations against him.""
"What kind of accusations?""
"He didn't tell me.""
"Did you speak to her after that?""
Danielle nodded slowly.
"Once.""
"When?""
"At the restaurant in the photograph.""
I stared at her.
"What did she say?""
Danielle's lips trembled.
"She told me Ethan wasn't who he claimed to be. She said he had tried to get access to financial information that didn't belong to him. She warned me not to trust him.""
"Did you believe her?""
"At first, I thought she was jealous.""
"Jealous of what?""
"She said Ethan had been asking questions about your life. She thought he was looking for someone else to target.""
My hands went numb.
"She thought he was targeting me?""
Danielle nodded.
"She said she had seen your name in some of his paperwork. She told me to stay away from him.""
"And you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
She began sobbing.
"Because I needed money. Because I thought he could help me. Because I convinced myself she was wrong.""
Robert's voice was firm.
"Did you know Ethan had been involved in the events leading to her death?""
Danielle looked up sharply.
"I don't know anything about her death. I swear to you. I don't know what happened that night.""
I believed that she might be telling the truth about not knowing what caused the medical emergency.
But that didn't erase what she had admitted.
She had known my first wife was afraid of Ethan. She had known he was asking questions about Jordan's trust. And she had married me after he had already identified my family as a potential financial opportunity.
I stood.
"Did you ever tell Ethan that my first wife had warned you about him?""
Danielle nodded.
"What did he say?""
Her face drained of color.
"He said she had become unstable. He said she was going to destroy herself by making accusations she couldn't prove.""
I felt my heart pound.
"Did he threaten her?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he threaten you?""
She looked at me.
"Not at first.""
Robert closed the folder.
"We're going to need a full written account of what you've told us tonight. Any documents, messages, or communications involving Ethan must be preserved. You should obtain independent legal counsel before making further statements.""
Danielle nodded weakly.
Then she turned toward me.
"Marcus, I know you hate me.""
I didn't answer.
"I know I've hurt Jordan. I know I betrayed you. But I need you to understand that I never wanted anyone to get hurt.""
I thought about Jordan asking whether I believed him.
I thought about the way his face had crumpled when Danielle accused him.
"You didn't have to want him hurt," I said.
"You only had to decide his pain was worth the risk.""
She began to cry again.
I walked toward the staircase.
"Where are you going?"" she asked.
"To check on my son.""
"Marcus, please. Can we fix this?""
I stopped without turning around.
"I don't know.""
It was the only honest answer I had left.
Then my phone rang.
Robert glanced at the caller ID.
It was an investigator from the financial fraud unit.
I answered.
"Mr. Brooks," the investigator said, "we've received additional information about Ethan Cole. We need to speak with you as soon as possible.""
"What happened?""
"We've identified a second account connected to the suspected transfers. More importantly, we've found a document that appears to connect Ethan to a previous financial investigation.""
My stomach tightened.
"What kind of investigation?""
There was a pause.
Then the investigator said, "A case involving a deceased woman's insurance policy and an attempted unauthorized transfer of assets from a minor's trust.""
I looked at Danielle.
She had gone pale.
"Whose case?"" I asked.
The investigator gave me the name.
My first wife's.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
"Mr. Brooks, we believe your wife's death may need to be reviewed in light of the financial evidence. We are not drawing conclusions about the cause of death, but we need to establish whether anyone exploited the circumstances surrounding it.""
I stood motionless, holding the phone.
Six years of grief had taught me to live with unanswered questions.
May you like
Now those questions were coming back.
And this time, I wasn't going to let anyone silence them.
