Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

Dad read Vanessa's messages three times.

Then he placed his phone face down on the table.

“She's bluffing,” he said.

Daniel shook his head.

“Don't assume that.””

“Laura died five years ago. Whatever Vanessa claims to know, she should have told me years ago.””

“Maybe she was waiting for the right moment.””

Dad looked at the phone again.

“Why now?””

Daniel didn't answer.

I reached for Dad's hand.

“Do we have to go back?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“But she said she knows something about Mom.””

Dad looked at me.

“I know. But I'm not letting her use your mother to manipulate us.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“There's another option. We can ask her to meet somewhere public.””

Dad shook his head.

“I'm not meeting her alone.””

“You won't. I'll be there, and Richard can join us.””

Dad considered it.

Then he picked up his phone and typed a response.

*We'll meet at the house at three. Richard and Daniel will be present.*

Vanessa replied almost immediately.

*Fine. But bring Emily. She deserves to hear the truth.*

I felt my stomach tighten.

What truth?

At two forty-five, we arrived at the house.

Richard was already waiting outside.

He carried a leather folder and had a serious expression.

“Michael,” he said, shaking Dad's hand.

“Before we go inside, I want to make something clear. Nobody signs anything today.””

Dad nodded.

“Agreed.””

We entered together.

Vanessa was sitting in the living room.

She wore a black dress and had arranged two cups of tea on the coffee table.

Brittany sat beside her, scrolling through her phone.

When she saw me, she looked away.

“Michael,” Vanessa said, standing.

“I'm glad you came.””

Dad didn't sit.

“You said you had something to show us.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Her smile vanished.

“So you brought him.””

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

“You seem surprised.””

“I'm disappointed.””

“That's unfortunate.””

Vanessa looked back at Dad.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Michael, this concerns our marriage.””

“Our marriage ended when you put my daughter in the garage.””

Vanessa let out a frustrated breath.

“Must we keep discussing that?””

“Yes,” Dad replied.

“Until I understand how you could do it.””

She looked at me.

“Emily, I was under a lot of pressure. I made a mistake.””

I said nothing.

Vanessa approached me.

“Sweetheart, you know I love you.””

I stepped behind Dad.

Her expression hardened for a fraction of a second.

Then she turned toward the others.

“Fine. Let's discuss Laura.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“Go ahead.””

Vanessa took a small black USB drive from her purse.

“I found this among Laura's old belongings.””

Dad stared at it.

“Where?””

“In the storage room.””

“Why didn't you give it to me?””

“Because I wanted to understand what was on it first.””

Daniel frowned.

“Did you access the files?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Some of them.””

She connected the drive to the television.

A video appeared.

The screen showed my mother sitting at her desk.

She looked thinner than I remembered, but she was smiling.

“Emily,” Mom said softly.

My knees almost gave way.

It was her voice.

The voice I hadn't heard in five years.

Dad covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“If you're watching this, sweetheart, then something has happened that I couldn't prevent.””

Mom paused and looked down.

“I wish I could be there to explain everything myself. But I need you to know that none of this is your fault.””

The screen flickered.

Then Mom continued.

“Michael, if you're watching too, I need you to understand why I kept certain things from you.””

Dad leaned closer.

Vanessa stood beside the television with her arms crossed.

Mom looked directly into the camera.

“Vanessa has been asking questions about the company. She's been trying to get access to documents she has no legal right to see. I don't know how much Michael knows, but I believe she's using his trust to get what she wants.””

Dad turned toward Vanessa.

She didn't move.

The recording continued.

“I have spoken to Daniel. He has the original documents. If anything happens to me, please don't let anyone change Emily's trust.””

Mom paused.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Especially not someone who claims to have my best interests at heart.””

The screen went black.

Silence filled the room.

Dad turned slowly toward Vanessa.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“From Laura's belongings.””

“Why didn't you show it to me before?””

“Because I needed to understand what she was accusing me of.””

Daniel spoke calmly.

“Then perhaps you can explain the documents you submitted to transfer Emily's voting rights.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, that again?””

Richard opened his folder.

“We have a copy of the application. The signature appears to have been forged.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“I had Michael's permission.””

“I did not give you permission,” Dad said.

“You signed the preliminary paperwork months ago.””

“No, I didn't.””

She turned toward Brittany.

“Tell them.””

Brittany looked up.

“What?””

“Tell them you saw your father sign the documents.””

Brittany looked from her mother to Dad.

“I don't remember.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“Brittany.””

“I said I don't remember!””

Dad stared at her.

“Brittany, did you witness me signing anything?””

She looked down at her hands.

“Mom told me it was paperwork for the company.””

“What did you sign?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa stepped toward her.

“Stop making this difficult.””

Brittany recoiled.

“Mom, you said it was just a form!””

Richard immediately took out a notepad.

“Brittany, don't worry. Nobody is accusing you of anything. We just need to understand what happened.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“This is a family matter.””

“Not anymore,” Richard replied.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“You used my daughter to witness a fraudulent document?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she stopped pretending to be the victim.

“You think you're innocent in all this, Michael?””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“You married me. You gave me access to your accounts. You let me handle the household. You never questioned anything I did.””

“I trusted you.””

“And now you're acting as though I'm some criminal because your dead wife left behind a few papers?””

Daniel stood.

“Careful, Vanessa.””

She laughed.

“Or what?””

Daniel reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small audio recorder.

“Or we can listen to what you told someone three months ago.””

Vanessa went completely still.

Dad looked at him.

“What is that?””

“A recording supplied by someone who worked with Vanessa.””

Daniel pressed play.

A woman's voice came through the speaker.

It was Vanessa.

“If Michael signs the transfer, Emily won't have control over anything. By the time she turns eighteen, everything will be settled.””

A man's voice asked:

“What if he refuses?””

Vanessa answered without hesitation.

“Then we'll make sure he understands what happens if he doesn't cooperate.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Dad stared at his wife.

“Who were you talking to?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No words came out.

Daniel placed the recorder back in his briefcase.

“That conversation is being reviewed as part of the investigation.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed the black USB drive from the television.

“Enough!””

She yanked it out and threw it onto the floor.

The plastic casing cracked.

“Vanessa!”” Dad shouted.

She pointed at him.

“You have no idea what Laura did! You have no idea what she was hiding!””

Dad stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“She wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Don't talk about my mother.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Your mother made a deal with someone. She promised them something she couldn't deliver. And when she realized what she'd done, she tried to put everything in your name.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Who did she make a deal with?””

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked straight at Dad.

“Ask your precious Daniel why Laura was at the courthouse five days before she died.””

Dad turned toward Daniel.

“Do you know?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation frightened me more than anything Vanessa had said.

“Daniel?””

He slowly closed his briefcase.

“Michael, there's something I should have told you earlier.””

Dad's voice became sharp.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother wasn't at the courthouse to sign inheritance documents.””

“Then why was she there?”” I asked.

He took a deep breath.

“She was trying to change the beneficiary of the trust.””

Dad stared.

“Change it to whom?””

Daniel looked down.

Then he answered.

“To another child.””

The room fell silent.

My heart began pounding.

“Another child?””

Vanessa smiled.

It wasn't a happy smile.

It was the expression of someone who had finally reached the moment she'd been waiting for.

“Now, Michael,” she said softly, “perhaps it's time you told Emily about her brother.””

Dad turned toward her.

“What brother?””

Vanessa reached into her purse and removed a folded photograph.

She placed it on the coffee table.

It showed my mother standing beside a teenage boy.

The boy had dark hair, familiar eyes, and a smile that looked strangely like mine.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*To Laura. Thank you for promising to protect him.*

I picked up the photograph.

“Dad?””

He looked at it.

His face became completely white.

Then he whispered a name I had never heard before.

“Ethan.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“Surprise, Michael.””

And before anyone could ask another question, she delivered the final blow.

“Your wife had a son before she met you. And according to the documents she left behind, he may have a claim to the very inheritance you've spent five years believing belonged to Emily.””

I stared at the photograph.

My mother had kept an entire person hidden from me.

And judging by the expression on my father's face, he knew exactly who Ethan was.

May you like

But there was one question nobody in that room seemed willing to answer.

*Why had my mother waited until the last days of her life to try to bring him into ours?*
