Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Grave

At eight the next morning, Jasmine stood in front of the old chapel with her father, Charlotte, Ethan, and Martin Hayes.

Nobody had slept.

The chapel stood on a quiet stretch of land behind the estate cemetery. Its stone walls were weathered, and ivy climbed the narrow windows. Eleanor had often come here to sit alone after Jasmine's school performances, claiming that the silence helped her think.

Jessica was waiting inside.

She stood near the altar, dressed in black, with a thick envelope tucked beneath her arm.

When she saw the group enter, her expression hardened.

“I said Charlotte should come alone.””

“And I said you don't get to dictate terms anymore,” Charlotte replied.

Jessica looked at Martin.

“You brought a solicitor?””

“I'm here to ensure that any documents you provide are preserved properly,” Martin said.

“If you intend to make allegations, you should understand that they may have legal consequences.””

Jessica laughed bitterly.

“Everything has legal consequences now.””

David stepped forward.

“You said you'd explain why Eleanor died.””

Jessica looked at him.

“I said I'd explain what happened before she died.””

“Then start.””

She opened the envelope and removed several documents.

The first was a hospital report.

The second was a handwritten letter.

The third was a birth declaration bearing the names of Eleanor Mitchell and an unidentified man.

Charlotte took one look at the document and went still.

“My birth record?””

Jessica nodded.

“Your original one.””

Charlotte's fingers trembled as she read it.

The space for the father's name had been left blank.

“Why?””

“Because Eleanor refused to identify him.””

“Who was he?””

Jessica looked at David.

“Your husband has spent eleven years believing that he knew everything about the woman he loved. He didn't.””

David's jaw tightened.

“Stop playing games.””

Jessica placed the birth declaration on the altar.

“Charlotte was conceived before Eleanor married you. Her biological father was a man named Andrew Vale.””

Martin frowned.

“The Andrew Vale who owned Vale Development Group?””

Jessica nodded.

David looked stunned.

Andrew Vale had been a wealthy property developer whose company had competed with the Mitchell family for years. He had died in a boating accident shortly before Jasmine was born.

“He and Eleanor had an affair?”” David asked.

Jessica shook her head.

“It wasn't an affair. They were engaged.””

The words struck David like a blow.

Charlotte stared at her.

“What?””

“Eleanor met Andrew when she was twenty. They planned to marry. His family disapproved of her, and he was under pressure to secure a business alliance with another family. When Eleanor became pregnant, he asked her to keep the child secret until the situation could be resolved.””

“Did he abandon her?”” Charlotte asked.

“Eventually, yes. He married someone else. Eleanor was left alone, pregnant, and furious.””

Jessica's voice softened.

“She wanted to keep you. But Andrew's family threatened to take you from her if she ever tried to establish paternity. They had lawyers, money, and political connections. Eleanor was terrified that they would use the courts to separate her from you.””

Charlotte looked at the birth declaration.

“So she arranged an adoption.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she change her mind?””

Jessica glanced at David.

“Because she fell in love with him. Because she had Jasmine. Because she began to believe that the past no longer mattered.””

David stared at her.

“You're saying Eleanor hid Charlotte because she was afraid Andrew Vale's family would come after her.””

“That's what she told me.””

“And you knew?””

“I knew about the pregnancy. I knew about the threats. I knew she had arranged an adoption before you married her.””

Jessica lowered her eyes.

“I was the only person she trusted with the details.””

Jasmine crossed her arms.

“Then why did you take Charlotte from the hospital?””

Jessica looked at her.

“Because Andrew Vale's father discovered that Charlotte was alive.””

Charlotte's breath caught.

“Andrew's father?””

“His name was Richard Vale. He believed Charlotte was entitled to part of his son's estate, and he wanted control over her before she became old enough to make her own decisions.””

Martin leaned forward.

“Do you have evidence of that?””

Jessica handed him a letter.

It was dated eleven years earlier and addressed to Eleanor.

The letter threatened legal action if Charlotte's whereabouts were not disclosed. It also referred to a trust established by Andrew Vale for any biological children he might have.

Martin read it twice.

“This could be significant,” he said.

“But we'll need to verify its authenticity.””

Charlotte looked at Jessica.

“Why didn't you tell me any of this?””

“Because Richard Vale had people watching the hospital. Eleanor believed you would be safer if your identity remained hidden.””

“Then why did you tell everyone I was dead?””

Jessica's face crumpled.

“Because Richard threatened to destroy anyone who helped you.””

Charlotte shook her head.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No. I expect you to look at the evidence.””

Jessica opened the envelope again and removed a photograph.

It showed a younger Eleanor sitting in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

Standing beside her was Jessica.

And behind them, partly visible through the doorway, was a man in a dark suit.

David leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Jessica's voice dropped.

“Richard Vale.””

Jasmine stared at the photograph.

The man looked directly at the camera, his expression cold and unreadable.

“Why was he at the hospital?”” she asked.

“Because he wanted to see the child.””

Charlotte's hands shook.

“Did he take me?””

Jessica shook her head.

“No. Eleanor did.””

“Why did Dr. Lang say my mother was trying to protect me?””

“Because she was. She asked him to help her remove you from the hospital before Richard could claim you.””

David stared at Jessica.

“But the records say you collected her.””

“I signed the paperwork under my own name. Eleanor left the hospital with you, David. She wanted you to believe she was still at St. Catherine's because she knew Richard was watching the entrances.””

Jasmine frowned.

“Then how did Charlotte end up with the Bennett family?””

Jessica looked toward Charlotte.

“I arranged the placement. I thought they would keep her safe.””

“You told me you found me when I was sixteen,” Charlotte said.

“I did.””

“You knew where I was all along?””

Jessica hesitated.

“I knew the family who adopted you.””

Charlotte recoiled.

“You watched me grow up and never told me who I was?””

“I believed it was the only way to keep you alive.””

Charlotte's voice broke.

“You let me think my mother didn't want me.””

Jessica looked down.

“Yes.””

The admission was barely audible.

David stepped toward her.

“And you let me believe my wife's daughter had died.””

Jessica nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard Vale was looking for her. If he knew she was alive, he would have tried to claim her. And if you knew she was alive, you would have searched for her.””

David stared at her.

“You could have told me the truth.””

“I was afraid you would choose Eleanor over me.””

The chapel fell silent.

Jasmine looked at her stepmother.

“So you protected your place in the family by making sure Charlotte never had one.””

Jessica began to cry.

“I was young. I was frightened. I thought I was doing the right thing.””

“You were forty-seven when you transferred my inheritance to Ethan,” Jasmine replied.

“You were not a frightened young woman then.””

Jessica's tears stopped.

Her expression hardened.

“Your father had made promises to me, too. He said Ethan would always have a place in this family. But every time money was discussed, everything went to you.””

David stared at her in disbelief.

“So you stole from my daughter because you were angry about what you thought your son deserved?””

“I wanted to secure his future.””

“With money you had no right to take.””

Jessica looked away.

Martin gathered the documents.

“We'll need to preserve these and verify their origin. The letter from Richard Vale may also help establish why Charlotte's identity was concealed.””

Charlotte stood beside the altar, staring at the birth declaration.

“My father died before I was born?””

“Yes,” Jessica said.

“Andrew died three months before you were born.””

“Did he know about me?””

Jessica hesitated.

“He knew Eleanor was pregnant. He left a letter in his estate file naming you as a possible beneficiary.””

Charlotte's eyes widened.

“Then I may be entitled to his estate?””

“Possibly. That's why Richard wanted you under his control.””

Martin spoke carefully.

“If Andrew Vale established a trust for his biological children, Charlotte may have a claim. But we need to inspect the original will and trust instruments. We cannot assume entitlement based on this letter alone.””

Charlotte nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on Jessica.

“Why did you wait until now to tell me?””

Jessica looked toward the chapel doors.

“Because the estate sale is about to go through, and Richard's people have started asking questions again.””

Jasmine frowned.

“Richard Vale is dead?””

Jessica nodded.

“He died six years ago. But his company still exists. It's now controlled by his nephew, Richard Cole.””

Ethan went pale.

“Richard Cole?””

Jessica looked at him.

“Yes. The man who offered to fund your business.””

Ethan backed away.

“You knew he was using me?””

“I knew he wanted the estate.””

“And you still signed the agreement?””

Jessica's voice rose.

“He promised that Charlotte would receive her share of Andrew's trust, that you would receive your investment, and that Jasmine would retain the family home!””

Jasmine stared at her.

“You expect us to believe you were protecting everyone?””

“I was trying to make a deal that benefited all of us.””

“By forging Dad's signature?””

Jessica looked at David.

“He was never supposed to lose the house.””

“But he did lose control of it,” Martin said.

“And the mortgage application is fraudulent.””

Jessica's shoulders slumped.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the documents in her envelope might not save her.

Then Charlotte noticed a handwritten note tucked inside the original birth declaration.

She pulled it free.

The paper was thin and yellowed.

At the top, Eleanor had written:

For Charlotte, if she ever learns the truth.

Charlotte's fingers trembled as she read.

My darling girl,

I wanted to keep you. I wanted to raise you beside your sister and watch you become the person you were meant to be. But I was afraid of what Andrew's family would do to you. I made a decision I have regretted every day since.

Charlotte began to cry.

Jasmine stood beside her.

The letter continued.

If you ever find this, please understand that giving you away was not the same as not loving you. I hoped you would be safe. I hoped one day I could tell you everything.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

There is one person who knows why I never came back for you. His name is written on the back of this letter.

Charlotte turned the paper over.

A name had been written in Eleanor's familiar handwriting.

Not Jessica.

Not David.

Not Dr. Lang.

*Martin Hayes.*

Everyone turned toward the solicitor.

Martin's face had gone completely white.

David stared at him.

“Martin?””

The solicitor took a step backward.

“David, I can explain.””

Charlotte clutched the letter.

“You knew my mother?””

Martin swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at the four people staring at him.

Then he whispered, “Because I was the lawyer who arranged Charlotte's adoption.””

Jasmine felt her heart drop.

Martin continued, his voice trembling.

“And eleven years ago, Eleanor came to my office with a second set of documents. She told me that if anything happened to her, I was to give them to David and Jasmine.””

“Where are they?”” David demanded.

Martin looked at Charlotte.

“I never gave them to anyone.””

“Why not?””

“Because the documents named the person who paid to keep Charlotte hidden.””

Charlotte stepped forward.

“Who?””

Martin closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked directly at David.

“Andrew Vale's family didn't pay me.””

He paused.

“Your wife did.””

David stared at him.

“My wife is dead.””

Martin's voice dropped to a whisper.

“I know.””

Then he reached into his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

On the front, in Eleanor's handwriting, were six words.

*Open only when the truth is dangerous.*

May you like

And beneath them was a date.

The day before Eleanor's funeral.
