Chapter 6: The Letter Hidden for Eight Years
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother's handwriting on the scanned document.
I kept thinking about the letter Aunt Renee had found.
What had my mother discovered?
Why had she instructed Renee to keep it hidden?
And why had Brielle suddenly become so desperate to clear out the attic?
At 6:15 a.m., I heard someone moving around downstairs.
I got dressed quietly.
Noah was still asleep, so I left him a note telling him to stay in his room.
Then I went downstairs.
The kitchen was empty.
A fresh pot of coffee sat on the counter.
Beside it was a small white envelope with my name written across the front.
I recognized Brielle's handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a typed statement.
It said that I acknowledged my recent behavioral problems and agreed to stay with Aunt Renee temporarily.
At the bottom was a blank signature line.
I read the final paragraph twice.
It also stated that I agreed not to interfere with any financial or legal decisions involving my father's household.
I almost laughed.
They wanted me to sign away my right to question what happened to my mother's money.
I folded the paper and put it in my backpack.
Then I took a photograph of it.
As I turned toward the staircase, Brielle walked into the kitchen.
She wore a pale pink robe and held a cup of coffee.
Her eyes immediately landed on the envelope in my hand.
“You found it.””
I placed it on the counter.
“Did you expect me to sign this?””
She took a sip.
“It's a reasonable agreement.””
“It's ridiculous.””
Her expression remained calm.
“Your father is trying to protect the family.””
“From me?””
“From unnecessary conflict.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you so afraid of me speaking to the attorney?””
Her fingers tightened around the coffee cup.
“I'm not afraid.””
“Then there's no reason for me not to meet her.””
Brielle set down her cup.
“You think because you have a few documents, you suddenly understand how the world works?””
“I understand that someone used my name without my permission.””
She stepped closer.
“Be careful, Aaliyah.””
“Is that a threat?””
“It's advice.””
I picked up my backpack.
Brielle moved toward the doorway.
“You're not leaving this house with those papers.””
I stared at her.
“Move.””
She didn't.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then a small voice came from behind us.
“Let her go.””
We turned.
Noah stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding his tablet.
Brielle looked furious.
“Go back upstairs.””
“No.””
“Noah, don't make me call your father.””
He swallowed.
“Dad should know what you did.””
Brielle's face went pale.
I quickly moved beside him.
“Come on.””
We walked past her.
She didn't follow.
But as we reached the front door, she called after us.
“If you leave now, don't expect things to be the same when you come back.””
I turned.
“They already aren't.””
Aunt Renee was waiting outside a small coffee shop when we arrived.
She was my mother's younger sister.
She had the same dark eyes, the same soft voice, and the same habit of tucking her hair behind her ear when she was nervous.
The moment she saw me, she wrapped me in a hug.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
I held on tightly.
For the first time in days, I felt like someone was happy to see me.
Noah hugged her too.
Renee looked at the mark still faintly visible on my cheek.
“Did Brielle do that?””
I nodded.
Her expression hardened.
“I knew that woman was trouble.””
We sat at a corner table.
Renee placed a thick envelope on the table.
It was old, slightly yellowed, and sealed with clear tape.
My mother's handwriting was on the front.
*For Aaliyah. Only if Damon breaks his promise.*
My hands began trembling.
Renee pushed it toward me.
“Your mother gave this to me three months before she died.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she made me promise not to open it unless something happened to the trust or your father tried to remove you from the house.””
I stared at her.
“She knew this might happen?””
Renee nodded slowly.
“She was worried about some financial transactions. She had noticed that money was disappearing from an account that was supposed to remain untouched.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did she know Dad was taking it?””
“I don't know whether she knew everything. But she suspected someone was moving money without proper authorization.””
I opened the envelope carefully.
Inside were three things.
A handwritten letter.
A photograph.
And a small USB drive.
I unfolded the letter.
The first line made my eyes fill instantly.
My darling Aaliyah, if you're reading this, something has happened that I prayed would never happen.
I pressed the paper against the table.
Renee reached across and held my hand.
“Take your time.””
I continued.
I want you to know something before you read anything else. You were never a burden. You were never too difficult to love. And you must never believe that someone else's comfort is more important than your safety.
My vision blurred.
I wiped my eyes.
The letter continued.
I have made arrangements to protect your future. The money and property I leave behind are not gifts to be divided among people who happen to share your last name. They are yours.
I stopped.
Then I read the next paragraph.
Damon knows my wishes. I explained them to him clearly. I asked him to protect what belongs to you until you are old enough to manage it yourself.
I looked at Renee.
“He knew.””
She nodded sadly.
“Your mother trusted him.””
I continued reading.
There is one thing I need you to understand. If you ever discover that someone has used your inheritance without your consent, do not confront them alone. Contact Margaret Ellis. She has copies of the original documents.
My hands shook.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And Aaliyah, if Brielle is involved, please ask Renee to give you the photograph inside this envelope. Look at the date. Then watch the recording on the USB drive.
I looked up.
“What recording?””
Renee pointed toward the small drive.
“I don't know. Your mother told me it was important.””
I opened my backpack and took out my laptop.
Noah moved closer.
We inserted the USB drive.
A single video file appeared.
The filename was:
*OCTOBER_14_FINAL.*
The date was almost eight years old.
I clicked it.
The screen showed my mother's old living room.
Her favorite blue curtains.
The wooden bookshelf Dad had built for her.
And my mother.
She was sitting on the sofa, looking directly into the camera.
She appeared tired, but she smiled when the recording began.
“Hello, my sweet girl.””
I covered my mouth.
Noah moved closer to the screen.
Mom continued.
“If you're watching this, I need you to know that I didn't leave you alone. I made sure someone would be there to protect you.””
She paused.
Then she glanced toward someone outside the camera's view.
A man's voice spoke.
“Are you sure you want to include this?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes. She deserves to know.””
The camera shifted slightly.
A man stepped into view.
I recognized him immediately.
It was my father.
But what happened next made me stop breathing.
He sat beside my mother and took her hand.
She looked at him.
“Damon, tell her what you promised me.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
His voice was clear.
“I promise that Aaliyah's inheritance will remain untouched until she turns eighteen. No one will use it, borrow it, or benefit from it without her consent.””
My eyes filled with tears.
He had promised.
He had looked into a camera and promised my mother.
And then he had broken that promise.
But my mother wasn't finished.
She reached toward the camera.
“There is one more thing, sweetheart. Something I discovered before I made this recording.””
She took a breath.
“The person who has been accessing the trust isn't just stealing money.””
The video suddenly flickered.
Then my mother said a name.
A name I never expected to hear.
“Brielle.””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Noah whispered:
“She knew before Brielle married Dad?””
Renee looked down at the photograph.
Her face had turned completely white.
I picked it up.
It showed my father standing outside a bank with Brielle.
The date on the back was written in my mother's handwriting.
*Two months before the wedding.*
But it wasn't the date that frightened me.
It was the writing underneath.
This is the day I discovered who Brielle really was.
I turned the photograph over again.
A small note had been folded behind it.
Renee carefully unfolded the paper.
Her eyes moved across the words.
Then she looked at me.
“Aaliyah, there's something I haven't told you.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Your mother didn't die without knowing what Brielle had done.””
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
Renee lowered her voice.
“Your mother had already reported the first suspicious withdrawals. And according to the documents she left me, Brielle wasn't supposed to have any access to your father's accounts at all.””
“Then how did she get access to the trust?””
Renee looked toward the laptop.
“That's what we need Margaret to explain.””
Before I could respond, my phone began ringing.
Dad.
I hesitated, then answered.
“Aaliyah, where are you?””
“With Aunt Renee.””
“I need you to come home.””
“Why?””
His voice sounded strained.
“Because Brielle is telling me you stole confidential documents from the house.””
I looked at the photograph.
Then at the letter.
“I didn't steal anything. Mom left these for me.””
There was a long silence.
Then Dad said something that made my blood run cold.
“Brielle just called the police.””
I stood up.
“For what?””
“She's accusing you of taking valuable property and threatening her.””
I gripped the phone.
“Dad, that's insane!””
His voice dropped.
“Aaliyah, there's something else. The attorney called me this morning.””
I froze.
“What did she say?””
“She wants to freeze every remaining account connected to your mother's trust.””
I looked at Renee.
She closed her eyes.
Dad continued.
“And if that happens, Brielle could lose everything.””
Then, for the first time, my father sounded desperate.
“Please, sweetheart. Don't let her do this.””
I stared at the phone.
He was asking me to protect the woman who had slapped me, lied about me, and tried to send me away.
The woman who had apparently been involved in my mother's financial affairs before she even became part of our family.
I took a breath.
“Dad, I didn't do this to Brielle.””
Then I ended the call.
Renee immediately reached for her bag.
“We're going to Margaret's office.””
But before we could leave, Noah tapped my arm.
“Aaliyah?””
I turned.
He was looking at the photograph on the table.
“There's something written on the back.””
I picked it up again.
Beneath my mother's note, in much smaller handwriting, were six words I hadn't noticed before.
*Ask Damon who signed the first transfer.*
And beside those words was a date.
May you like
A date from eight years ago.
The same day my mother had died.
