Chapter 4: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

“David, please. You don't understand what you're about to destroy.””

Vanessa stood in the doorway of my father's office, her hands trembling at her sides. The woman who had slapped me less than an hour earlier was now struggling to keep her voice steady.

My father held the flash drive between his fingers.

“Then help me understand, Vanessa. What's on this?””

She swallowed.

“It's old family business. Things your first wife and I discussed before she died.””

I stared at her.

“You knew my mother?””

“Of course I knew your mother.””

“You told me you only met her once.””

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward me.

“I didn't say that.””

“Yes, you did. You said you met her at a charity dinner and barely spoke to her.””

“Emily, this isn't the time.””

“Then when is the time? When you finish stealing everything she left me?””

“Watch your mouth!””

The old command came automatically, sharp enough to make me flinch.

My father noticed.

His expression hardened.

“Don't speak to her like that again.””

Vanessa looked at him in disbelief.

“You're taking her side without even knowing what's on that drive!””

“Then we'll find out.””

Dad moved to his desk and connected the flash drive to his laptop. Vanessa took two quick steps forward.

“David, don't open it.””

He stopped typing.

“Why?””

“Because your wife was very ill when she made those recordings. She wasn't thinking clearly.””

I felt my heart hammer against my ribs.

“What recordings?””

Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.

Then she tried another approach.

“David, your first wife was frightened near the end. She believed people were trying to take things from her. She became suspicious of everyone.””

Dad stared at her.

“I was married to Margaret for twenty-four years. I know what she was like.””

“Then you should remember how difficult things became.””

“I remember sitting beside her hospital bed while she asked me to promise that I'd look after Emily.””

His voice cracked on my name.

“I remember promising her. And I remember believing I could keep that promise.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“So why am I finding letters, forged documents, and financial records hidden in my daughter's bedroom furniture?””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

No answer came.

Dad turned back to the laptop.

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were three audio files, two scanned documents, and a video labeled with my mother's name.

I reached for the edge of the desk to steady myself.

“Play the video,” I whispered.

Dad clicked it.

The screen went black for a second before an image appeared.

My mother sat in her favorite armchair, wearing the cream cardigan she had lived in during her final winter. Her hair was thinner than I remembered, and her face looked tired, but her eyes were clear.

I covered my mouth.

“Mom.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, Emily, something has happened that I was hoping to prevent.””

My knees weakened.

Dad pulled a chair toward me, and I sat down without taking my eyes off the screen.

My mother continued.

“I don't know when you'll see this. I hope you'll be old enough to understand why I kept certain things from you. I hope your father has kept his promise to protect you.””

She paused and glanced down at a sheet of paper.

“But if someone is trying to convince you that you don't belong in your own home, or that the money I left for you isn't yours, then I need you to know the truth.””

Vanessa made a strangled sound behind us.

“Turn it off.””

Dad didn't move.

My mother's voice filled the office.

“Before I became ill, I established a trust for Emily. The money came from the sale of my family's property and investments I'd maintained long before I married David. I wanted Emily to have a secure future, regardless of what happened to me.””

Dad's eyes widened.

He looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

My mother had never told him the original amount.

She had said she was making arrangements, but she hadn't wanted to burden him with financial details while he was helping care for her.

The video continued.

“I appointed David as trustee, with instructions that Emily's education, housing, and essential expenses should be covered. The remaining funds were to be protected until she reached the age specified in the trust.””

I leaned forward.

“How much was it?”” I whispered.

Dad shook his head, unable to answer.

On the screen, Mom took a breath.

“There is one more thing. I discovered that someone had requested information about the trust without my permission. At first, I assumed it was a clerical error. Then I learned that copies of certain documents had been requested using information that should have been private.””

Vanessa backed toward the door.

My father turned his head.

“Stay where you are.””

She stopped.

My mother's face filled the screen.

“I don't want Emily to grow up afraid of the people around her. I don't want her to believe every act of kindness hides a threat. But I would be failing her if I didn't tell her to be careful.””

Mom looked down at her hands.

“If Vanessa Carter ever becomes involved in managing your finances, verify everything independently.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She was white as paper.

Dad slowly stood.

“You knew my wife before you married me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That video is being taken out of context.””

“Did you know Margaret?””

“I told you, we met.””

“More than once?””

She pressed her lips together.

Dad's voice dropped.

“Did you have access to her financial records before she died?””

“No.””

“Then why did she name you?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she was paranoid! She thought everyone wanted her money.””

I stared at the screen.

My mother had looked frightened, but she hadn't looked confused. She had spoken deliberately, with the calmness of someone who had rehearsed every sentence.

Dad replayed the final section.

This time, he paused when my mother mentioned the trust.

A small caption appeared at the bottom of the video: *TRUST PRINCIPAL: $486,000.*

I stopped breathing.

Almost half a million dollars.

My mother had left me nearly half a million dollars, and I had spent the last four years working shifts at a bookstore to pay for textbooks and groceries.

I turned toward Dad.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head slowly.

“No. I knew she'd created a trust. I didn't know the principal was that large.””

“Where is it now?””

His expression grew grim.

“We're going to find out.””

He opened the scanned documents.

The first showed the trust's original balance. The second listed several withdrawals and transfers made over the previous four months.

The numbers blurred before my eyes.

Dad leaned closer to the screen.

“There's been a withdrawal of forty-eight thousand dollars.””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“That was for household expenses.””

Dad turned.

“What household expenses cost forty-eight thousand dollars?””

“Repairs. Taxes. Bills. You know how expensive this house is.””

“Then show me the invoices.””

“I don't have them here.””

“Where are they?””

“I'd have to look.””

Dad pointed at another line.

“There's another transfer for thirty-two thousand.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I told you I was managing the money!””

“You told me the trust was untouched.””

She went silent.

I looked at her.

“You said you didn't know anything about it.””

“I was trying to protect this family!””

“From what? My own money?””

Vanessa's expression twisted.

“You have no idea how much your father has sacrificed. You sit here acting like a victim while he pays for everything!””

“I work for everything I have!””

“Because you refuse to appreciate what you're given!””

Dad slammed his hand against the desk.

“Enough!””

The room shook with the force of his voice.

Vanessa recoiled.

He looked at the screen again, his face drawn and exhausted.

“I'm contacting the attorney and the bank. Until we know exactly what happened, you are not touching another financial document.””

She stared at him.

“You can't be serious.””

“I've never been more serious in my life.””

“You're going to ruin our marriage over a misunderstanding?””

“No. You may have done that yourself.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked as if he had struck her.

Then she turned toward me.

“You think you've won, don't you?””

I rose slowly from the chair.

“No. I think my mother tried to protect me, and I finally understand why.””

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

“You should be careful what you wish for, Emily. The truth can destroy more than one person.””

She stormed out of the office.

Dad reached for his phone.

But before he could make the call, the laptop chimed.

A new document had opened automatically from the flash drive.

It was a scanned letter, dated two weeks before my mother's death.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Vanessa Carter.*

And beneath it, in my mother's handwriting, were six words that made my father grip the edge of the desk.

She knows where the original is.

Dad stared at the screen.

“Where's the original what?””

I looked toward the door Vanessa had just slammed.

For the first time, I wondered whether my mother's warning had been about the money alone.

Because whatever Vanessa had been hiding, my mother had known about it before she died.

May you like

And she had left us only one clue.

The original.
