Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn’t His
Dad reached the top of the stairs just as I folded the paper against my chest.
“Ethan?””
I looked at him.
He stopped.
Something about my face must have told him this was worse than he expected.
“What happened?””
Madison stepped backward.
“Dad, I found something.””
Dad's eyes moved between us.
“What did you find?””
I handed him the document.
He read the first few lines.
Then he stopped breathing.
Not literally.
But close enough that I noticed.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“Where did you get this?””
Madison answered.
“Mom's handbag.””
Dad looked toward the staircase.
“Vanessa has this?””
“She had it last week,” Madison said.
“I saw it when she left her bag open.””
Dad read the page again.
His face became pale.
“Ethan, go downstairs.””
“But—”
“Please.””
There was something in his voice that made me obey.
I walked down the stairs slowly.
Madison followed.
Dad remained upstairs.
A minute later, we heard the bedroom door open.
Then Vanessa's voice.
“Michael?””
Dad didn't answer.
“What are you doing in here?””
His voice finally came.
“Where did you get this?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said, “Get out of my room.””
I froze on the bottom step.
Madison grabbed my wrist.
“Don't listen.””
But we both listened.
Dad's voice was quiet.
“Did you prepare this document?””
“What document?””
“The transfer agreement.””
Another silence.
Then Vanessa laughed.
“You're seriously accusing me of forging your signature now?””
“You haven't answered the question.””
“Because it's ridiculous.””
“Is this your handwriting?””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Dad came into view at the top of the stairs.
His face looked different.
Not angry.
Worse.
He looked betrayed.
Vanessa appeared behind him.
She had changed out of her silk blouse and was holding a suitcase.
Her eyes found me immediately.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then she looked at the paper in Dad's hand.
Her expression hardened.
“Madison.””
Madison stepped behind me.
“Don't,” Dad said.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're letting a twelve-year-old rummage through my personal belongings?””
“You forged my signature.””
“I did not.””
Dad held up the document.
“Then why does this say my signature authorizes the transfer of Laura's estate funds into an account you control?””
Vanessa's face went completely still.
I didn't understand every word.
But I understood enough.
My mother's money.
Dad's signature.
Vanessa's account.
It suddenly felt as if the air had disappeared from the house.
“I never transferred anything,” Vanessa said.
Dad looked at her.
“The bank statement says otherwise.””
“That doesn't prove I forged anything.””
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
Dad walked downstairs.
Vanessa followed.
“Michael, think about this carefully. If I wanted to steal from you, why would I leave a paper trail?””
Dad stopped.
“Because you thought I would blame Ethan.””
Her eyes flicked toward me.
Only for a second.
But Dad saw it.
“So you admit it.””
“I admit nothing.””
“You knew about the cameras.””
“No.””
“You knew about the account.””
“Yes, because I'm your wife.””
“You knew the money was missing.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Ethan would be blamed.””
“No.””
Dad's voice became colder.
“Then why did you tell Madison to put the money in his backpack?””
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
Madison shook her head.
“I didn't make her do anything,” Vanessa said.
“You did,” Madison whispered.
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“You're going to regret lying about me.””
Dad stepped between them.
“That's enough.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You're choosing them.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“No. I'm choosing the truth.””
She gave a bitter smile.
“You always say that when you're angry. But you don't know what the truth is.””
Dad looked at the document.
“Then help me find it.””
Vanessa said nothing.
He held out his hand.
“Your phone.””
Her eyebrows rose.
“What?””
“Your phone. If you didn't forge anything, you have nothing to hide.””
She laughed.
“You're insane.””
“Then give it to me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because it's private.””
Dad nodded slowly.
“Fine.””
He turned away.
Vanessa seemed relieved.
Then he said, “I'll call the bank.””
Her face changed.
Dad noticed.
He took out his phone.
“I'll ask them for every transaction and every authorization connected to the estate account.””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Michael, wait.””
Dad looked down at her hand.
She released him.
“Please.””
It was the first time I had heard Vanessa sound afraid.
Dad lowered his phone.
“What?””
She looked toward me.
“Not in front of Ethan.””
Dad stared at her.
“He deserves to know.””
“No, he doesn't.””
“He was accused of stealing ten thousand dollars because of you.””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Dad went completely still.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Madison whispered, “Mom…”
Dad's voice was almost inaudible.
“Protect yourself from what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
He repeated it.
“Vanessa, what were you trying to protect yourself from?””
She looked at him.
Then at the document.
Then at me.
“I made a mistake.””
Dad shook his head.
“No. A mistake is forgetting to pay a bill. You moved money.
You forged a signature. You framed a child.””
“I didn't forge your signature.””
“Then explain the document.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, everything changes.””
Dad stared at her.
“Everything already changed.””
She began crying.
Real tears.
For the first time, I couldn't tell whether they were real.
Vanessa sat down heavily on the couch.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Dad.
“Of losing you.””
He didn't respond.
She wiped her face.
“When Laura died, you promised yourself you'd never let Ethan feel abandoned. I understood that. I tried to understand it. But then years passed, and everything was still about him.
His school. His memories. His mother. His future.””
“He's my son.””
“I know\!””
Her voice cracked.
“And I became the woman who was always asking for less.””
Dad frowned.
“What does that have to do with the money?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I borrowed it.””
“How much?””
“All of it.””
The room went silent.
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“A business.””
Dad stared at her.
“What business?””
“I invested in something.””
“Without telling me?””
“I thought I could replace it.””
“And when you couldn't?””
Her eyes filled again.
“I panicked.””
Dad walked away from her.
“So you framed Ethan.””
“I needed time.””
“You needed a scapegoat.””
“I didn't think you'd actually throw him out.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“You were willing to let Dad send me away.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn't want you hurt.””
“But you hit me.””
She looked away.
Dad closed his eyes.
When he opened them, the warmth was gone.
“Pack your things.””
Vanessa stood.
“Michael…”
“Pack your things.””
She stared at him.
Then she nodded.
But before she could move, Dad's phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His expression changed almost immediately.
“Yes, this is Michael Carter.””
He listened.
“What?””
I watched his face.
He looked at the document in his hand.
“No. That can't be right.””
Another pause.
Then Dad slowly sat down.
“What date was the transfer?””
He listened.
“Six months ago?””
My heart started beating faster.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Who authorized it?””
He didn't speak for several seconds.
Then he whispered, “Me?””
Vanessa's face went white.
Dad's eyes moved back to the document.
“No,” he said into the phone.
“I never authorized that transfer.””
He listened again.
Then his hand began to shake.
“Send me the original authorization immediately.””
He ended the call.
I stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
Dad looked at me.
“The bank says the signature was verified.””
Vanessa whispered, “See?””
Dad ignored her.
“They also said something else.””
“What?””
He looked at the document Madison had found.
“The transfer wasn't made from the account I thought.””
He turned the page over.
“It came from an older account.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
Dad stared at her.
“An account I closed after your wedding.””
She shook her head.
“That isn't possible.””
“It shouldn't be.””
Dad looked toward his study.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“Ethan, I need to check something.””
“What?””
He didn't answer.
He rushed upstairs.
Seconds later, we heard drawers opening.
Then a crash.
Madison and I looked at each other.
Dad shouted from the study.
“Vanessa!””
She didn't move.
“Michael?””
“Come here.””
She slowly walked upstairs.
I followed before anyone could stop me.
Dad stood beside his desk holding an old metal box.
The lid was open.
Inside were photographs, insurance records, and several sealed envelopes.
One envelope was torn open.
Dad held it between his fingers.
“This was never supposed to be opened.””
Vanessa looked at it.
Her face went blank.
Dad pulled out a letter.
At the top was my mother's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother's handwriting.
But the letter was dated *two months before she died*.
Dad read the first line.
Then he looked at me.
“Ethan…”
His voice broke.
“This isn't about Vanessa.””
He turned the letter around.
The final sentence was visible.
*Michael, if anything happens to me, do not let Ethan inherit the money until you discover what happened to the missing account.*
Dad stared at the words.
Vanessa stepped backward.
May you like
And then she whispered something that made my father drop the letter.
“She knew.””
