Chapter 8: The Boy Everyone Was Hiding
I stared at the detective.
I waited for him to correct himself.
For him to say there had been a mistake.
A wrong database.
A missing file.
Anything.
But he didn’t.
He just stood there with the same serious expression.
The kind of expression people wear when they know the truth will hurt someone.
“There has to be a mistake,” I whispered.
The detective shook his head.
“We checked twice.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“No, you don’t understand.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You were there.””
Daniel’s face was pale.
“I know.””
“You took me to the hospital.””
“I know.””
“You held my hand.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You told me everything was okay.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
I felt anger rising through the fear.
“Then how can there be no record?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had an answer that would make sense.
Noah sat beside me, completely silent.
I turned toward him.
“Hey.””
He looked up.
His eyes were full of confusion.
“Am I still your son?””
The question shattered me.
I immediately pulled him into my arms.
“You will always be my son.””
“But…”
“No.””
I held his face gently.
“Listen to me.””
His eyes met mine.
“Nothing written on a piece of paper changes what you mean to me.””
His lips trembled.
“But what if I’m not…”
He couldn’t finish.
I knew what he was thinking.
What every child would think.
If the documents were wrong, maybe the love was wrong too.
I hugged him tighter.
“You are Noah.””
He whispered:
“How do you know?””
I looked at him.
“Because I watched you learn to walk.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“Because I know you hate tomatoes but love tomato soup.””
A small smile appeared.
“Because you sleep with the same stuffed dinosaur even though you pretend you don’t.””
He looked down.
“I’m too old for Dino.””
“You’re eight.””
He smiled faintly.
“Exactly.””
For a few seconds, he was just my son again.
Not evidence.
Not a mystery.
Not the center of a nightmare.
Just Noah.
The detective cleared his throat gently.
“We need to find out what happened.””
I nodded.
“What does that mean?””
“It means we need the original hospital records.””
“But Emily has them.””
“Yes.””
“And she went to my house.””
The detective’s expression changed.
“We have officers there now.””
I immediately stood.
“I need to go.””
“No.””
The word came from Daniel.
Everyone looked at him.
He looked at me.
“Don’t go there.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””
“I’m serious.””
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because Emily doesn’t just want to expose me.””
The room became still.
“What does she want?””
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“She wants him.””
My blood ran cold.
The detective stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“She believes Noah belongs to her.””
The detective’s expression hardened.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she believes he was taken from her.””
The words hit me.
Taken.
That was the same word Vanessa had used.
The same idea behind everything.
Everyone was fighting over Noah.
But nobody was asking what Noah wanted.
The detective asked:
“Are you saying Emily believes Noah is her biological child?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“And is she?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“You don’t know?””
“I was told she lost the baby.””
“But you don’t know?””
“No.””
The detective stepped back.
“Mr. Carter, you need to understand the seriousness of this.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
The detective’s voice became firm.
“For eight years, a child may have been living under false identity records.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“And multiple adults concealed information.””
“I know.””
“And now another person who claims a connection to this child has gone to the mother’s home.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“I know.””
The detective looked at him.
“Then tell us everything.””
Daniel was quiet.
Too quiet.
Finally, he spoke.
“After Noah was born…”
He stopped.
Then continued.
“Emily disappeared.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed time.””
“For eight years?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought she was gone.””
The detective frowned.
“Then why did she return?””
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“Because she saw him.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
The detective wrote it down.
“Where?””
Daniel swallowed.
“At a school event.””
I felt a chill.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“She saw him before I did.””
“What?””
“She recognized him.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“She told me Noah had her birthmark.””
I looked at Noah.
“What birthmark?””
Daniel hesitated.
Noah immediately touched the back of his neck.
I froze.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
The small mark behind Noah’s ear.
The one I always thought was just something he was born with.
The detective noticed my reaction.
“You knew about it?””
I nodded slowly.
“Since he was a baby.””
“Did Daniel ever explain it?””
“No.””
The detective looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked trapped.
“Emily said it was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Noah was her child.””
The room became silent.
I felt a wave of emotions hit me at once.
Fear.
Anger.
Confusion.
But above everything else…
Love.
Because no matter what anyone discovered, Noah was still the boy I raised.
The boy who called me when he lost his first tooth.
The boy who cried when our dog got sick.
The boy who made pancakes every Sunday and somehow always got flour everywhere.
The detective received another phone call.
He answered.
“Yes?””
He listened.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Everyone watched him.
He walked toward the window.
“No, secure the area.””
A pause.
Then:
“Do not let anyone enter.””
My heart started racing.
“What happened?””
The detective ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
“The officers at your house found Emily.””
My stomach dropped.
“Is she okay?””
The detective’s expression was difficult to read.
“She was inside.””
“How did she get in?””
Silence.
“Detective?””
He looked at Daniel.
“She had a key.””
Nobody spoke.
A key.
A key to my house.
The detective continued.
“She also had a box.””
My hands went cold.
“What was inside?””
He looked at Daniel.
“Photos.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Photos of what?””
The detective answered:
“Photos of Noah.””
I felt sick.
“How many?””
The detective paused.
“Hundreds.””
Noah moved closer to me.
The detective continued:
“Some were from school.””
“Some were from outside your house.””
“Some were taken while he was with you.””
I felt anger rise.
“How long has she been watching him?””
The detective looked down.
“We don’t know.””
Then he said the words that made Daniel lose all color.
“But there was something else in the box.””
“What?””
The detective opened a folder.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
Small.
White.
Old.
A baby bracelet.
I stared at it.
The detective placed it on the table.
“Emily claims this belonged to Noah.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Because he recognized it.
The detective turned the bracelet over.
There was writing on the back.
A name.
Not Noah.
Not Carter.
A different name.
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
My heart pounded.
“What does it say?””
He slowly turned the bracelet toward me.
And when I saw the name written there, everything I believed about the day my son was born collapsed.
May you like
Because the bracelet said:
*Baby Boy Rose.*
