Chapter 7: The Witness Who Was Never There
“Who reported it?”” Ryan demanded.
Detective Morgan's voice came through the speakerphone, crisp and controlled.
“His name is Gregory Shaw. He works for a private financial consulting firm that handled some of Brianna's business affairs. He contacted the police this morning and claimed Emma's injuries resulted from an accidental fall.””
I stared at Ryan.
“Gregory Shaw? I've never heard that name.””
“Neither had I,” Ryan said.
Detective Morgan continued.
“Mr. Shaw claims he was informed about the incident shortly after it occurred. He says he has information suggesting Emma was unstable and that Brianna was attempting to protect her.””
I felt sick.
“Was he in my house?””
“We're investigating that. The security account shows a login from a device associated with him on the morning of the assault. That establishes a digital connection, not necessarily his physical location.””
Ryan gripped the edge of my bed.
“Why would a financial consultant care about what happened to my wife?””
“That is one of the questions we intend to ask him.””
After the call ended, Ryan stood motionless beside the window.
I could see him putting the pieces together, each one making his expression darker.
“Gregory Shaw,” he repeated.
“I think I know where I've heard that name.””
“Where?””
“Brianna's old boutique. She told me a consultant had helped her secure funding when the business was struggling.””
“Was it a legitimate business?””
“I thought it was. She showed me paperwork. She said she had investors.””
“Did you ever meet him?””
“No.””
I looked down at the hospital blanket.
“So someone who helped finance her business accessed our security system, and now he's telling the police I fell.””
Ryan's jaw tightened.
“We're not letting him rewrite what happened.””
A knock interrupted us.
Detective Morgan entered with another officer.
“We've located Mr. Shaw,” she said.
“He has agreed to answer questions about the security account and the attempted transfer.””
“Agreed?”” I asked.
“For now.””
She pulled a chair closer to my bed.
“There's another development. We reviewed the original camera footage. The recording shows Brianna entering the kitchen, demanding something from you, and striking you. It also shows her leaving without calling for help.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Even though I'd lived through every second, hearing the sequence described so plainly made it feel as if the room had lost its air.
“Can I see it?””
Detective Morgan hesitated.
“We can arrange that with the evidence team. I want you to have support available if you choose to watch.””
“I want to see it.””
Ryan reached for my hand.
“Emma, you don't have to.””
“I know. But I need to understand what she did when I couldn't see.””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“We'll arrange a controlled viewing.””
She turned to Ryan.
“Mr. Carter, I also need you to provide the emails between you and Brianna regarding the trust, as well as any communications involving Gregory Shaw.””
“I've already sent what I have.””
“Good. Don't delete anything, even if it appears irrelevant.””
Ryan nodded.
When the detective left, he sat beside me.
“Do you remember the night Brianna asked for money?”” he asked.
“Which time?””
“The last time. Before Singapore.””
I thought about it.
“She called while you were packing. You went outside to take the call.””
“Right. I didn't tell you everything she said.””
I looked at him.
“What did she say?””
“She told me that if I didn't help her, she'd lose everything. I said I couldn't keep rescuing her. Then she said, ‘You won't have to. I've found someone who understands how this family works.’”
A chill ran down my spine.
“Gregory?””
“I think so.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I thought she was bluffing. I didn't want to worry you when you were already having trouble sleeping.””
I looked at our joined hands.
“Ryan, you don't have to protect me from the truth. I need you to trust me enough to tell me when something is wrong.””
He lowered his head.
“I know. I'm sorry.””
I squeezed his fingers.
“Let's not make that mistake again.””
That afternoon, Detective Morgan returned with Olivia Grant, the digital evidence specialist.
They had arranged for me to review selected portions of the camera footage on a secure laptop.
Ryan sat beside me. Mrs. Alvarez had come to the hospital and waited outside the room in case I needed her.
Olivia explained that the recording had been preserved from the original system and that the display was a verified copy.
“Tell me when you want me to stop,” she said.
I nodded.
The video began with an empty kitchen.
The clock in the corner showed 11:03 a.m.
Then Brianna entered.
She wore the red sweater from the photograph. She set her handbag on the counter, checked her phone, and glanced toward the doorway.
For several seconds, she stood still.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
She smiled.
My fingers tightened around Ryan's hand.
Brianna walked toward the island.
The audio was clear enough to hear her demand the password.
I watched myself refuse.
I watched her snatch my phone.
I watched her shove me against the counter.
Then came the first blow.
I made a sound I didn't recognize.
Ryan immediately reached for the laptop.
“Stop it.””
Olivia paused the recording.
I couldn't look at him.
“I need to finish.””
“Emma—”
“I need to see what happened.””
We continued.
The footage showed Brianna striking me again. It showed me collapsing, one hand clutching my stomach. It showed the blood appearing on the floor.
Brianna stepped backward.
For several seconds, she stared at me.
Then she picked up my phone.
She wiped the screen with her sleeve.
And she left.
No call for help. No attempt to check whether I was conscious. No hesitation at the door.
Just the sound of her footsteps disappearing down the hallway.
The screen went dark.
I covered my face.
Ryan wrapped his arms around me, careful of my injuries.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
“I'm so sorry.””
I cried against his shoulder until I could breathe again.
Then Olivia spoke.
“There is something else in the footage.””
I lifted my head.
She rewound the recording to the moment just before Brianna entered.
“Look at the doorway.””
A figure appeared in the narrow reflection of the glass panel beside the kitchen entrance.
Someone stood outside, partially obscured by the frame.
The person wasn't visible long enough to identify clearly.
But they were holding a phone.
Olivia enlarged the image.
The figure moved their hand, and the screen flashed.
“They were recording the camera's live feed,” Olivia explained.
“We can't yet establish exactly what they were doing, but the timing is significant.””
Ryan leaned closer.
“Can you identify them?””
“Not from this image alone.””
She advanced the recording.
The figure disappeared from the reflection just as Brianna entered the kitchen.
Then, after Brianna left, the same silhouette briefly reappeared.
This time, the person seemed to be looking down at their phone.
A few seconds later, the security system registered the third-device login.
Detective Morgan had been standing quietly behind us.
“Mr. Shaw claims he received information about an accidental fall,” she said.
“If he was monitoring the feed, we'll need to determine whether he saw the assault live or accessed the recording afterward.””
“Can you prove it?”” Ryan asked.
“That's what we're working toward.””
Olivia closed the laptop.
As she packed her equipment, she turned to Detective Morgan.
“I should mention one additional detail. The third device didn't simply view the camera. It accessed the account's administrative panel.””
Ryan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means whoever was using it had more permissions than an ordinary viewer. They could access certain system settings.””
“Could they delete the recording?””
“Potentially, depending on the settings. But the original footage survived.””
I remembered the anonymous email.
The second user wasn't created to watch you.
It was created to make sure the original footage could never be traced to the person who ordered the transfer.
My stomach tightened.
“Detective, what if Gregory wasn't just watching? What if he was helping Brianna hide what she was doing?””
“We'll investigate that possibility.””
Before leaving, Detective Morgan asked me to confirm whether I had ever met Gregory Shaw.
I told her I hadn't.
Then she showed me a photograph from a company website.
A middle-aged man in a navy suit stood beside a group of business executives.
I recognized him immediately.
Not from meeting him.
From the photograph Brianna had posted online six months earlier, celebrating the opening of her boutique.
She had called him her most trusted adviser.
Beneath the photograph, she'd written:
Some people open doors for you. Others show you how to build your own.
Ryan stared at the image.
“That was the man who financed her business.””
Detective Morgan nodded.
“And we now have reason to believe he accessed your home security system.””
She put the photograph away.
“Mr. Shaw has agreed to meet with us tomorrow morning.””
After she left, Ryan sat quietly beside me.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, “Emma, I think Brianna's debt was only part of this.””
I turned toward him.
“What do you mean?””
He looked at the dark laptop.
“I think someone was counting on us being too embarrassed to investigate. They expected us to keep everything inside the family.””
My phone vibrated.
An email from the anonymous sender had arrived.
There was no attachment this time.
Only a message.
Gregory Shaw didn't choose Brianna because he believed in her business. He chose her because she had access to something he needed.
I read the sentence aloud.
Ryan looked at me.
May you like
Before either of us could respond, another line appeared.
Ask him why your husband's name was on a document authorizing the transfer.
