Chapter 4: The Woman in My Bedroom

I watched the recording seven times before I could bring myself to breathe normally.
There was no confusion about what I was seeing.
At 2:13 a.m. eleven days earlier, Sophia had entered my bedroom, opened my closet, and removed an envelope from my locked cashbox. She hadn't rushed.
She hadn't looked frightened. She had moved with the confidence of someone who believed she would never be caught.
And before leaving, she had looked directly at my security camera and smiled.
That smile was going to change everything.
I downloaded the original recording and saved it to three separate locations. Then I called Ethan.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"What is it, Noah?""
"I found the money.""
Silence.
"What money?""
"The eight thousand dollars that disappeared from my bedroom. I know who took it.""
I heard a door close on his end.
"Who?""
"Your wife.""
Another silence followed, longer this time.
"Don't say that unless you're absolutely sure.""
"I'm looking at the recording right now.""
"Send it to me.""
"I will. But before I do, I want you to understand something. I never stole anything from Sophia.
I never attacked her. And I never tried to destroy your marriage.""
My voice cracked on the last sentence.
"I spent three months trying to keep your marriage from becoming my problem.""
"Ethan, I—"
"Noah, I need to see this.""
He hung up.
I sent him a copy of the video.
For the next twenty minutes, I sat at my kitchen table, staring at my phone. Every few seconds, I checked the screen, hoping Ethan would call back and say something that might repair the damage between us.
When the phone finally rang, I answered immediately.
"Did you watch it?""
"Yes.""
His voice sounded strange.
"All of it?""
"Yes.""
"Then you know.""
"I know what the video shows.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means I need to talk to Sophia.""
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"You still need to talk to her?""
"She's my wife, Noah.""
"And I'm your brother.""
He said nothing.
I closed my eyes.
"Yesterday, you punched me because she cried. Today, you've watched her steal from me, and you're still looking for a reason to give her another chance.""
"That's not fair.""
"Neither was the punch.""
I heard him inhale sharply.
"You're right.""
The admission caught me off guard.
Then he continued.
"I can't defend what I did. I won't try. But I need to understand why she did this.""
"Why don't you ask her about the eight thousand dollars?""
"I will.""
"And ask her why she smiled at the camera.""
"I saw it.""
"Good. Because I never want to hear you tell me again that you didn't know who to believe.""
He whispered, "I'm sorry.""
This time, I didn't tell him it was okay.
Because it wasn't.
An hour later, someone knocked on my front door.
Ethan stood outside alone.
His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked as though he hadn't slept. He wore yesterday's wrinkled shirt and held his phone in one hand.
I didn't invite him in.
"Where's Sophia?""
"At a hotel.""
"Did you confront her?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
He looked down.
"She said the video was taken out of context.""
I stared at him.
"She stole money from my bedroom. What context could possibly excuse that?""
"She said you gave it to her.""
"Did you believe her?""
"No.""
The answer came quickly, but it didn't make me feel better.
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"She said she'd been having financial problems. She claimed she borrowed the money and planned to return it.""
"Without asking me?""
"I know.""
"From a locked box?""
"I know.""
"After entering my bedroom in the middle of the night?""
His shoulders slumped.
"I know, Noah.""
I stepped aside and let him enter.
He walked into the living room and stopped beneath the bookshelf. The camera was still there, its tiny red indicator glowing.
"I never noticed it," he murmured.
"That was the point.""
He looked at me.
"Why didn't you tell me the money was missing?""
"Because I didn't know who was taking it. I didn't want to accuse my own family without proof.""
A painful expression crossed his face.
"You trusted us.""
"I trusted you.""
He sat on the edge of the couch.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he asked, "What happens now?""
"The police get the footage. They investigate the money and the assault accusation. I'll answer their questions, and I'll give them whatever evidence they need.""
"And me?""
I studied the man who had once carried me home after I fell off my bicycle, who had taught me to drive, who had stood beside me at our mother's funeral.
"You decide whether you want to help establish the truth or keep protecting your wife from it.""
Ethan looked as though I'd struck him.
"I don't want to lose you.""
"You should have thought about that before you hit me.""
He lowered his head.
"I know.""
My phone buzzed on the coffee table.
A message from Officer Miller.
She asked whether I had discovered additional footage relevant to the missing money. I replied that I had, and she arranged a time for me to provide it.
When I put the phone down, Ethan was staring at the screen.
"Is that the officer?""
"Yes.""
"Can I come with you?""
I hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because I want to tell them what I saw. I want to correct what I said yesterday.""
I studied his face, searching for the anger that had frightened me the previous afternoon.
It wasn't there.
Only shame remained.
"Then tell them everything," I said.
"Don't leave anything out because you're afraid of what happens to your marriage.""
He nodded.
"I won't.""
For the first time since the accusation, I thought we might be able to move forward.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
Sophia's name appeared on the screen.
He answered and switched on the speaker without thinking.
"What do you want, Sophia?""
Her voice came through sharp and trembling.
"I want you to come here immediately.""
"I'm busy.""
"Your brother is destroying my life!""
Ethan glanced at me.
"You stole money from his bedroom.""
"I borrowed it!""
"Without asking?""
"I was going to return it!""
"Did you also borrow his shirt when you tried to kiss him?""
A sudden silence followed.
Then Sophia spoke in a voice I barely recognized.
"You need to be careful, Ethan.""
His brow furrowed.
"What does that mean?""
"It means you have no idea what your brother has been hiding from you.""
I stepped closer to the phone.
"What are you talking about?""
Sophia laughed softly.
"Ask him about the money he received after your mother died.""
My stomach tightened.
Ethan went pale.
"What money?""
Sophia's voice dropped to a whisper.
"The inheritance your mother left behind. The money Noah has been keeping secret from you.""
Then she hung up.
Ethan slowly turned toward me.
May you like
And I realized that whatever Sophia was planning next, she had just found a new way to make my brother doubt me.
This time, she was reaching for a secret I hadn't thought about in years.
