Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Name
Daniel crouched behind the filing cabinet.
Lily was pressed against his chest.
Evelyn crouched beside them, one hand over the child's mouth.
Another gunshot echoed.
Officer Shaw shouted for everyone to stay down.
“Who is that?”” Daniel whispered.
Evelyn's eyes remained fixed on the corridor.
“Your grandfather's son.””
Daniel frowned.
“My grandfather's son was my father.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Thomas was his son.””
“Then who is this?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Jonathan Cross.””
Daniel's heart slammed against his ribs.
“Jonathan is dead.””
“No.””
“He disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You're saying he's alive?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He disappeared because your grandfather wanted him dead.””
Daniel looked toward the corridor.
The footsteps were getting closer.
“Then who is Gabriel?””
Evelyn's expression changed.
“My son.””
Daniel stared.
“Naomi's brother?””
“Yes.””
“Then why does he think he's my brother?””
“Because Eleanor's father told him he was.””
Daniel's mind raced.
“Why would your son believe that?””
“Because he was raised to.””
A man's voice came through the darkness.
“Evelyn.””
She stiffened.
Jonathan.
“Come out.””
Evelyn pulled Lily closer.
“You can't hide forever.””
Daniel looked at Shaw.
She signaled toward the corridor.
The officers moved silently.
Jonathan's voice came again.
“You know what happens if you tell him.””
Evelyn whispered:
“He'll kill me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I know the truth about you.””
“What truth?””
She looked directly into his eyes.
“You were never supposed to be the heir.””
Daniel frowned.
“My father left me the company.””
“He left you the company because he believed you were his only surviving child.””
“And?””
“You weren't.””
She pointed toward herself.
“I was the firstborn.””
Daniel stared.
“But Thomas's statement says I was born at 9:17.””
“He was lying.””
“What?””
“Your father wrote that statement to protect you.””
Evelyn took a breath.
“I was born at 9:17.””
Daniel's entire body went cold.
“You're older than me.””
“By two minutes.””
“Then why did he write that I was born first?””
“Because your grandfather wanted the firstborn male to inherit.””
Daniel looked at the birth certificate.
His name was recorded as the first child.
Evelyn's had been altered.
“They changed the records.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I tried.””
Daniel stared at her.
“When?””
“Fourteen years ago.””
Daniel remembered.
A letter had arrived at Mercer House addressed to him.
His mother had burned it.
He had been twenty-three.
He'd asked Eleanor what it was.
She'd told him it was a scam.
“You contacted me.””
“Yes.””
“My mother intercepted it.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you come yourself?””
“Because Jonathan found me.””
Daniel looked toward the corridor.
“So he knows you're alive.””
“He always knew.””
“Then why kidnap Lily?””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“Because Gabriel found the trust documents.””
Daniel stared.
“Gabriel discovered he wasn't your brother.””
“Yes.””
“And Jonathan?””
“He convinced Gabriel that if he brought Lily here, he could force you to reveal the trust.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Why would Jonathan care about the trust?””
“Because the money was never the real objective.””
“What was?””
Evelyn looked at the old records.
“The evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“The financial records proving your grandfather stole millions from the company.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“My father found them.””
“Yes.””
“And Jonathan?””
“He found them first.””
A shadow moved across the corridor.
Shaw raised her weapon.
“Police! Drop the weapon!””
Silence.
Then footsteps ran.
Officers chased.
Daniel stayed with Lily.
Evelyn looked at him.
“You need to get her out.””
“Not without you.””
“I can take care of myself.””
“You've been hiding for thirty-eight years.””
She smiled sadly.
“I had good reason.””
A cry echoed from the hallway.
Then a body hit the floor.
Daniel stood.
Officer Miller appeared.
“Jonathan is down.””
Shaw followed.
“He's alive.””
Evelyn stepped toward the doorway.
Daniel caught her arm.
“Wait.””
She looked at him.
“You don't know what he's capable of.””
“I know.””
“Then don't.””
Evelyn pulled free.
“He's my father.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“Jonathan Cross is my father.””
Everything clicked.
Vivian's story.
Evelyn's disappearance.
Naomi's birth.
The family name.
The supposed biological father.
Daniel stared at the woman standing beside him.
His twin sister.
His entire family history had been built around hiding her existence.
Then another figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
Gabriel.
He was bleeding from his forehead.
He raised his hands.
“I didn't shoot anyone.””
Shaw pointed her weapon at him.
“Get on your knees.””
Gabriel obeyed.
His eyes found Daniel.
“I didn't hurt Lily.””
Daniel nodded cautiously.
“I believe you.””
Gabriel looked at Evelyn.
His face crumpled.
“Mom?””
Evelyn stared at him.
“My son.””
Gabriel began crying.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Grandfather told me I was Thomas's son.””
“He lied.””
“I spent my whole life believing I belonged here.””
Evelyn stepped toward him.
“You do belong somewhere.””
“Where?””
“With me.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“You abandoned me.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
The same words Eleanor had used.
Daniel felt a chill.
Every generation had inherited the same excuse.
Protection.
Fear.
Silence.
Lies.
Officer Shaw approached Jonathan.
The older man was lying on the floor, blood spreading across his sleeve.
His eyes found Daniel.
“You have no idea what your father did.””
Daniel knelt a few feet away.
“Then tell me.””
Jonathan laughed weakly.
“Thomas wasn't protecting you.””
“What was he doing?””
“He was protecting himself.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My father tried to expose my grandfather.””
“Yes.””
“He left evidence.””
“Yes.””
“He created the trust.””
“Yes.””
“Then why say he wasn't protecting me?””
Jonathan's eyes narrowed.
“Because the evidence also proves who you really are.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“I know who I am.””
“No.””
Jonathan smiled.
“You know the name they gave you.””
He coughed.
“Not the name on your first medical record.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
She was crying.
Jonathan whispered:
“Ask her why she was the only baby in the nursery whose blood type didn't match Thomas Mercer.””
Daniel stared.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“That's impossible.””
Jonathan laughed.
“Ask her.””
Daniel turned toward his sister.
“Evelyn?””
She shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.””
“Tell me.””
“Daniel—”
“Tell me!””
She finally looked at him.
And the words came out like a confession.
“Because I'm not Thomas's daughter.””
Daniel felt the world disappear.
Jonathan smiled.
“Exactly.””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“You and I were twins, but only one of us was Thomas's child.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who is my biological mother?””
Evelyn's face collapsed.
“Eleanor.””
Daniel couldn't breathe.
His mother had spent thirty-eight years telling him she had taken him to protect him.
But if Eleanor was his biological mother—
then she had never needed to take him at all.
He turned toward the corridor.
Eleanor stood there.
She had heard everything.
Daniel's voice was barely a whisper.
“Mom?””
Eleanor looked at him.
And after thirty-eight years of lies, she finally said the words he had been waiting his entire life to hear.
“I am your mother.””
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“And she is not your sister.””
The lights in the basement suddenly went out.
May you like
In the darkness, someone screamed.
And when the emergency lights flickered back on, Eleanor was gone.
