Chapter 8: The Plan To Erase Me

The sentence on the paper felt like a knife.

*“After the mother is gone, the inheritance returns.””*

I stared at the words.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I did.

The terrifying part was how clearly everything suddenly connected.

The accusations.

The hospital room.

The oxygen mask.

The money.

Margaret hadn’t just wanted Ethan.

She wanted me gone.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

The officer watched him carefully.

“Mr. Carter.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother wouldn’t…”

He stopped.

Because he had already seen what she was capable of.

Nobody said anything.

Then Rachel quietly asked:

“What does ‘gone’ mean?””

The officer folded the paper.

“That is what we are investigating.””

I looked at him.

“You found this in her basement.””

“Yes.””

“Along with the recordings?””

“Yes.””

“And the documents?””

“Yes.””

My hands were shaking.

“How long has she been planning this?””

The officer didn’t answer.

That was the worst answer.

Because it meant nobody knew.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did your mother ever talk about me like that?””

His face changed.

Memories.

I could see them passing through his eyes.

“She always said you were dangerous.””

My stomach tightened.

“Dangerous?””

“She said you changed me.””

I almost laughed.

“I changed you?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She said before you, I cared about family.””

“And after me?””

“She said I cared about the wrong people.””

I looked toward Ethan.

The wrong people.

That was what Margaret thought my son was.

A threat.

A problem.

An obstacle.

Rachel stepped closer.

“She did the same thing to me.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She told people I was unstable.””

Her voice shook.

“She told them I was obsessed with money.””

The officer nodded.

“That matches the documents we found.””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“She destroyed my life.””

Daniel looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Rachel’s expression hardened.

“Sorry doesn’t give me six years back.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

And for once, he didn’t try to explain.

The room went quiet.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Mommy?””

I turned immediately.

“I’m here.””

He looked tired.

“Why is everyone fighting?””

My heart broke.

I sat beside him.

“We’re not fighting.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Daddy looks sad.””

I glanced at Daniel.

He did.

More than I had ever seen.

Because the truth had finally reached him.

I touched Ethan’s hand.

“Sometimes grown-ups make mistakes.””

Ethan frowned.

“Big mistakes?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

He thought about it.

Then asked:

“Can people fix them?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the hardest question.

Some mistakes could be fixed.

Some could only be faced.

A few minutes later, Dr. Patel entered.

“We need to discuss Ethan’s condition.””

Everyone became serious.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

He looked at the file.

“Now that we know there may have been long-term exposure to the medication, we reviewed his symptoms differently.””

Daniel stood.

“Is he okay?””

Dr. Patel nodded.

“He is stable.””

I released a breath.

“But?””

The doctor looked at me.

“But we need to understand the full timeline.””

“What timeline?””

“When the medication started.””

Rachel looked confused.

“Started?””

Dr. Patel nodded.

“The levels in his system suggest this was not a single incident.””

My blood ran cold.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

He looked at Daniel.

“This may have been happening over time.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Dr. Patel continued carefully.

“We need more tests.””

I looked at Ethan.

My son.

My baby.

The thought that someone had been slowly harming him made me feel sick.

Margaret didn’t just attack him today.

She had been hurting him before.

Quietly.

Secretly.

While we trusted her.

The officer received another message.

He read it.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“Yes?””

“We need you to come with us.””

My heart jumped.

“Why?””

“We found something connected to the plan against you.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

The officer looked at him.

“You can.””

We left Ethan with the nurse and Rachel.

Walking away from him felt impossible.

Even for a few minutes.

But I needed answers.

The officer led us to a small conference room.

On the table were boxes.

Files.

Photographs.

My stomach turned.

“What is all this?””

“Evidence from Mrs. Carter’s home.””

He opened the first box.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Financial records.

Then he placed a folder in front of me.

I opened it.

And froze.

It was my personal information.

My work schedule.

My daily routine.

Places I visited.

People I spoke with.

“How did she get this?””

The officer looked at Daniel.

“That is what we are investigating.””

Daniel looked sick.

“My mother had access to our house.””

The officer nodded.

“Apparently.””

I turned the pages.

There were notes.

Handwritten.

Margaret’s handwriting.

*“She trusts too easily.””*

Another page.

*“Daniel will believe me if he thinks she is unstable.””*

Another.

*“Ethan must remain the only heir.””*

I closed my eyes.

The cruelty was worse than I imagined.

Because this wasn’t anger.

It was planning.

The officer placed another document down.

“This was found hidden separately.””

I looked at it.

A life insurance policy.

My name.

My death benefit.

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel picked it up.

His hands shook.

“When was this created?””

The officer answered.

“Eight months ago.””

Daniel looked horrified.

Eight months.

Before Ethan got sick.

Before the hospital.

Before everything exploded.

Margaret had been preparing.

“She wanted me dead.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because the evidence was there.

The officer opened another file.

“There’s more.””

I almost didn’t want to know.

“What?””

He showed us a photograph.

A security camera image.

It showed Margaret entering our house.

At night.

Holding a small bag.

Daniel stared.

“When was this?””

“Three weeks before Ethan became ill.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You told me she never came over.””

He closed his eyes.

“I thought she didn’t.””

That answer hurt.

But before I could respond, the officer’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then stood.

“We need to return to the hospital.””

My heart dropped.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“Margaret escaped.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stood immediately.

“How?””

“She was being transferred for questioning.””

“Where is she?””

The officer grabbed the files.

“We don’t know yet.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

Because I knew Margaret.

She never ran without a reason.

She never moved without a plan.

We rushed back to Ethan’s room.

The hallway was chaotic.

Security officers were everywhere.

The nurse ran toward us.

“Mrs. Carter.””

“What happened?””

Her face was pale.

“She came back.””

My blood froze.

“Who?””

The nurse looked behind her.

“Margaret.””

I ran into the room.

Ethan was safe.

Rachel was beside him.

But the window was open.

And on the bed was a note.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

Three words.

*“You chose wrong.””*

Daniel read it over my shoulder.

Then another line appeared underneath.

Written in the same handwriting.

*“If I cannot have the inheritance, nobody will.””*

The officer immediately called for backup.

But before he could leave, Ethan spoke.

Quietly.

“Mommy.””

I turned.

“What is it?””

His eyes were wide.

“Grandma came to say goodbye.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Before the nurse came back.””

Rachel stood.

“What did she say?””

Ethan looked scared.

“She said she was sorry.””

I froze.

Margaret apologized?

Impossible.

“What else?””

Ethan looked at me.

“She said…”

His voice became smaller.

“She said she didn’t want to hurt me.””

Everyone waited.

May you like

Then Ethan whispered:

“She said she only needed me to disappear again.””
