Chapter 8: The Report They Hid From Me
The photograph on my phone was blurry.
But I didn’t need perfect clarity.
I recognized the words.
*INCIDENT REPORT.*
*CHILD DEATH INVESTIGATION.*
*STATUS: PENDING REVIEW.*
My eyes moved over the screen again and again.
Pending review.
Not closed.
Not accidental.
Not finished.
I looked at Daniel.
The man who had looked me in the eyes and told me Noah died in an accident.
The man who watched me build a future with him while carrying a secret that could have changed everything.
“You knew.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
His face already had.
Margaret moved toward me.
“Give me that phone.””
I pulled it away.
“No.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
Silence.
I looked at Daniel.
“Explain it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The worst part was that I was no longer surprised.
I had spent months asking questions and receiving half-answers.
Now I understood.
The silence was part of the lie.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Emma, read the next page.””
I looked at her.
“There’s more?””
She nodded.
“The person who sent that photo sent several documents.””
My fingers moved quickly.
Another image loaded.
This one was clearer.
A statement.
A witness statement.
I started reading.
Then stopped.
Because the name at the top made my heart race.
*Ryan Mitchell.*
I looked toward him.
He had been standing near the door.
His face turned pale.
“You knew about this too?””
Ryan looked down.
“Not everything.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He swallowed.
“I knew there were questions.””
Questions.
Everyone knew.
Everyone had questions.
But I was the only one who had been living inside the lie.
I looked back at the screen.
Ryan’s statement was short.
*I heard an argument between Daniel and Margaret on the night of the incident. Margaret told Daniel that nobody could know what happened in the barn.*
My hands started shaking.
I looked at Margaret.
She didn’t look angry anymore.
She looked trapped.
“Is this real?””
Nobody answered.
I stood slowly.
My leg protested immediately.
Ryan moved forward.
“Emma, sit down.””
I ignored him.
“Is this real?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not my name.””
His face tightened.
“What?””
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re comforting me.””
I pointed at the phone.
“You knew there were questions about Noah’s death.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Almost more than the lie.
“How long?””
“A long time.””
My chest tightened.
“Since before we met?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I imagined the beginning of our relationship.
The first dinner.
The first time he told me he loved me.
The day he proposed.
All those memories suddenly felt like photographs from someone else’s life.
“You looked at me every day.””
My voice cracked.
“You looked at me and let me believe you were honest.””
“I was afraid.””
I stared at him.
“Of what?””
He didn’t answer.
I laughed softly.
“Exactly.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“Daniel was protecting himself.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You were protecting yourself.””
She froze.
“You controlled the story.””
I held up the phone.
“You hid documents.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You made your son disappear from your life story.””
Then back at Margaret.
“And you helped him.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
“Then tell me.””
She didn’t.
Again.
Silence.
I looked at Sarah.
“Who sent the report?””
Sarah shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Ryan spoke quietly.
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
Ryan looked terrified.
“It was my father.””
Margaret’s face changed instantly.
“Don’t.””
Ryan ignored her.
“My dad kept copies of everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he didn’t trust Margaret.””
The room became silent.
I remembered Ryan saying earlier that Margaret created secrets.
Now I understood.
She didn’t just hide things.
She collected them.
Used them.
Controlled people with them.
“Where is your father now?””
Ryan looked down.
“He passed away last year.””
Margaret looked away.
“And before he died?””
Ryan swallowed.
“He told me I needed to stop protecting this family.””
My eyes moved between them.
A family built on silence.
A family where everyone knew the truth but nobody wanted to be the first person to say it.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from the same unknown number.
*Ask Daniel what happened to the original report.*
I looked at Daniel.
His face changed.
“What?””
I showed him the message.
His eyes dropped.
And there it was.
Recognition.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know.””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
His shoulders fell.
“The original report disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“From where?””
“The police records.””
Sarah stared at him.
“You never told me that.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
Sarah’s voice rose.
“You found out and said nothing?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
She stepped closer.
“You were Noah’s father.””
The words hit him.
Hard.
I watched him break a little.
But I couldn’t let myself forget.
Because pain didn’t erase responsibility.
“Who removed it?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
That was all I needed.
I turned.
Margaret’s face became cold.
“You think I did that?””
“I think you know.””
She laughed.
A small, bitter laugh.
“You all think I’m some monster.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody needed to.
She looked at me.
“You came into this family and judged everyone.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I came into this family and trusted everyone.””
The words seemed to affect her more than anger would have.
Because trust was something she understood.
Something she knew she had broken.
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Emma, I need to explain.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He took a breath.
“The night Noah died…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Mom wasn’t supposed to be alone with him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“She was angry.””
Margaret’s expression changed.
“Daniel.””
He continued.
“She wanted custody changed.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“She threatened me.””
Daniel nodded.
“She said if I didn’t agree with her, she would make sure I lost everything.””
I felt cold.
“And you believed her?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I was afraid.””
There it was again.
Fear.
The word that explained everything.
But it didn’t excuse anything.
“You let fear decide your life.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it was the first time he wasn’t trying to make himself the victim.
I looked at Margaret.
“What did you do that night?””
For the first time…
She looked genuinely afraid.
“I loved my grandson.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
Her hands trembled slightly.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
Everyone saw it.
Then the hospital room door opened.
A police officer stood outside.
Everyone turned.
“Emma Carter?””
My heart started racing.
“Yes?””
The officer looked at Daniel.
Then Margaret.
“We need to ask some questions regarding a reopened investigation.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel whispered:
“No.””
The officer continued.
“Specifically about the death of Noah Mitchell.””
Margaret’s face went white.
May you like
And then the officer said the words that changed everything.
“We found the missing report.””
