Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Lily Before Anyone Else
Richard Vale stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like the old house had been waiting for him.
The flashlight in Thomas’s hand shook slightly as he pointed it toward the man’s face.
Twenty years had passed, but Richard looked exactly like the kind of person Evelyn warned everyone about.
Calm.
Confident.
Dangerously comfortable.
His gray hair was neatly combed despite the storm outside. His expensive coat was untouched by dust, as if he had walked into the abandoned house only moments after leaving a boardroom.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Thomas.
Then to Mark.
Then finally to Lily.
And when he saw her, something changed.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Recognition.
“You look just like her.””
Lily stepped back.
“Like who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That made Anna move closer to her daughter.
“Stay away from her.””
Richard looked at Anna.
A faint smile appeared.
“Twenty years later, and you’re still protecting her.””
Anna’s face went pale.
“You know me.””
“Of course I do.””
The room went silent.
Lily looked between them.
“How?””
Richard slowly walked into the bedroom.
Mark stepped forward.
“Stop right there.””
Richard looked at him.
“You’re Mark Whitmore.””
Mark’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
Richard nodded.
“Daniel’s younger brother.””
“You knew my brother?””
Richard gave a humorless laugh.
“I knew him better than anyone.””
Thomas immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard looked amused.
“Still playing the loyal friend?””
Thomas’s jaw tightened.
“You destroyed Daniel’s life.””
Richard tilted his head.
“No.””
His eyes moved toward Lily.
“Evelyn did.””
The name hung in the air.
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the problem.
Every person connected to this secret had a different version of the truth.
And somehow, all of them had pieces.
Lily held Daniel’s journal against her chest.
“You knew my father?””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression softened.
“I’ve been trying to.””
Anna stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Richard looked at her.
“You believe that because Evelyn told you I was the villain.””
“And you weren’t?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That silence was enough to make everyone uncomfortable.
Mark noticed.
“You did something.””
Richard looked at him.
“We all did.””
“No.””
Mark shook his head.
“Don’t include everyone in your mistakes.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“You sound like Daniel.””
That sentence hurt.
Mark looked away.
Richard walked toward the desk where the journal sat.
He didn’t touch it.
He simply looked at it.
“He kept that.””
Thomas watched him carefully.
“You knew about the journal?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because Daniel showed it to me.””
The room exploded with disbelief.
“What?””
Thomas stared.
“You expect us to believe Daniel trusted you?””
“He did.””
“Why?””
Richard looked toward Lily.
“Because Daniel knew the truth about me.””
Lily frowned.
“What truth?””
Richard took a breath.
Then he said:
“I am not the man Evelyn told everyone I was.””
Nobody moved.
Mark laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“You walked into our house claiming you knew my brother. Now you want us to believe my mother lied?””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
Mark shook his head.
“That’s convenient.””
“It’s also true.””
Richard reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out an old photograph.
He placed it on the bed.
It showed Daniel.
Anna.
And another person.
A young Richard.
All three of them standing together.
Lily stared.
“You were friends?””
Richard nodded.
“Before families destroyed everything.””
Anna looked at the picture.
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You disappeared.””
Richard looked at her.
“I was forced to.””
“By who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Lily noticed.
“By Evelyn?””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Mark looked toward the door.
“My mother?””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother knew Daniel discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
Richard looked at the journal.
“That the Whitmore fortune was never what everyone thought.””
Mark frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard sat down slowly.
“Your grandfather built the company using stolen patents and illegal agreements.””
Thomas nodded.
“Daniel found the records.””
Richard continued.
“And Evelyn spent years covering it up.””
Mark looked sick.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Richard looked at him.
“You spent your entire life believing your family was built on success.””
He paused.
“But Daniel discovered it was built on a crime.””
Lily looked down.
“And my father died because of that?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
That was the first time he looked uncertain.
Finally, he said:
“Your father died because he was going to expose someone.””
Anna whispered:
“Who?””
Richard looked at Evelyn’s old house around them.
“Someone inside the family.””
Everyone froze.
Mark’s face changed.
“Who?””
Richard looked directly at him.
“You already know.””
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
“You do.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“Your mother.””
Silence.
The accusation was impossible.
But somehow…
It felt possible.
Mark backed away.
“My mother didn’t kill Daniel.””
Richard didn’t say yes.
He didn’t say no.
Instead, he said:
“She made sure the truth disappeared.””
Thomas looked at him.
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Richard looked down.
“It’s worse.””
Lily’s hands tightened around the journal.
“Why?””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Richard.
“Why did she take me?””
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
Then he answered.
“Because you were the one person who could destroy everything.””
A chill moved through me.
Lily looked confused.
“I was a baby.””
“Yes.””
Richard nodded.
“But your existence proved something.””
“What?””
He looked at Anna.
Then at the journal.
Then back at Lily.
“You were the legal heir to something Evelyn could never control.””
Mark frowned.
“But Lily wasn’t even a Whitmore.””
Richard shook his head.
“That’s where everyone was wrong.””
The room became silent.
“What are you saying?”” Mark asked.
Richard stepped closer.
“Daniel discovered that Lily’s birth records were changed.””
Thomas looked at him.
“We know that.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
He pointed toward the journal.
“Evelyn didn’t hide Lily because she was Daniel’s daughter.””
Lily froze.
Richard continued.
“She hid Lily because she knew who Lily’s mother was.””
Anna stared.
“What?””
Richard looked at Lily.
“Your mother wasn’t just Daniel’s partner.””
He paused.
“She was the rightful owner of the original Whitmore inheritance.””
Nobody spoke.
The words made no sense.
Anna looked horrified.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard shook his head.
“Your grandmother made sure everyone believed it was impossible.””
Lily looked at Anna.
“Mom?””
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s because Evelyn erased your family’s history.””
Mark looked overwhelmed.
“My mother…”
He couldn’t finish.
Richard turned toward the window.
“She thought she could bury every document.””
He looked back.
“But Daniel left copies.””
Lily looked at the key from the box.
The small metal key she had found earlier.
“What is this for?””
Richard stared at it.
And for the first time, genuine fear appeared on his face.
“That key wasn’t supposed to be found.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at the locked box.
“Because it opens the one place Evelyn never wanted anyone to enter.””
Thomas frowned.
“The vault.””
Mark looked at him.
“What vault?””
Richard’s eyes moved toward the floor beneath them.
“The original Whitmore family vault.””
A silence followed.
Then the old house creaked.
A sound came from downstairs.
Not a person walking.
Something falling.
Everyone turned.
Richard’s face changed.
“She knows.””
Mark looked at him.
“Who?””
Richard whispered:
“Evelyn.””
The bedroom door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone jumped.
Then a voice came through the hallway.
Cold.
Familiar.
“You were never supposed to find that key.””
Lily froze.
Because the voice belonged to the woman who had controlled her entire life.
Evelyn.
Richard moved toward the door.
But before he reached it, Evelyn spoke again.
“This ends tonight.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Because Lily is not the only secret I buried.””
