Chapter 9: The Man Behind Every Betrayal
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But those seconds were enough.
Enough time for every fear I had ignored to come alive.
The house was silent.
Not peaceful.
Silent like something was hiding.
I stood completely still, listening.
The rain had stopped outside, but water still dripped from the gutters. The old wooden floor beneath my feet creaked slightly as someone shifted in the darkness.
“Everyone stay where you are,” Emily whispered.
Her voice was different.
The confident woman who had walked into my house minutes earlier was gone.
This was the voice of someone who had survived a nightmare before.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“Claire?””
I ignored him.
Not because I didn’t hear him.
Because I didn’t know if I trusted him.
The emergency lights near the hallway finally turned on, casting a dim glow across the room.
Everyone looked around.
The front door was still locked.
The windows were closed.
Nothing appeared different.
Until I saw it.
The envelope.
The one Emily had brought.
It was gone.
My heart dropped.
“Where is it?””
Everyone looked at me.
“What?”” Daniel asked.
“The envelope.””
Emily immediately checked the table.
Her face changed.
“It was right here.””
Margaret looked nervous.
“I didn’t touch it.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody believed her.
I walked slowly around the room.
The envelope contained proof.
Evidence that could destroy everything.
And someone had taken it without anyone noticing.
That was impossible.
Unless they were closer than we thought.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where were you when the lights went out?””
His expression changed.
“Seriously?””
“Answer me.””
He stared at me.
“I was standing right there.””
“Where?””
“Near the couch.””
Emily looked at him.
“That’s not true.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Emily pointed.
“You moved.””
His face hardened.
“You were watching me?””
“I watch everyone now.””
The words hit harder than she probably intended.
Because I understood.
Trust had become a luxury none of us could afford.
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire, you think I took it?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was…
I didn’t know.
And that scared me.
Eight years ago, I thought I knew the people around me.
Now I wasn’t sure I knew anyone.
A sound came from upstairs.
A single footstep.
Everyone froze.
Daniel immediately moved toward me.
“Stay behind me.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was painful.
The man who had spent months planning against me was suddenly trying to protect me.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Claire.””
“I don’t need you pretending to be my protector.””
His face fell.
But before he could respond, another sound came from upstairs.
A drawer opening.
Emily grabbed a fireplace poker.
“Someone is inside.””
Margaret looked terrified.
“My house has security.””
I looked at her.
“My house.””
She flinched.
A small reminder.
But an important one.
I had forgotten something.
This was my home.
Not theirs.
Not Daniel’s.
Mine.
I grabbed my phone and opened the security app.
The cameras loaded.
Front entrance.
Empty.
Backyard.
Empty.
Garage.
Empty.
Then I checked the upstairs hallway.
My blood froze.
A figure was standing there.
Still.
Watching.
I turned the phone toward Emily.
She looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
Her face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
I stared.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“That’s Richard.””
The name echoed through the room.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who had manipulated everything from the shadows.
The man who had been watching my life collapse.
Daniel stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Emily looked at him.
“Is it?””
The question silenced him.
I grabbed the phone.
“Call the police.””
Emily stopped me.
“Wait.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because if Richard is here, he wants something.””
I stared at her.
“Someone is inside my house.””
“Yes.””
“Then I don’t care what he wants.””
I started dialing.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
The security camera showed the figure upstairs.
My phone was ringing.
The connection was impossible.
Unless…
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a familiar voice.
Older.
Calmer.
Crueler.
“Hello, Claire.””
My entire body went cold.
Richard.
I looked at the camera.
The figure upstairs disappeared.
“How are you doing this?””
He laughed softly.
“You always were good at solving problems.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
“What question should I ask?””
A pause.
Then:
“Why did your father never tell you the truth?””
My chest tightened.
“What truth?””
“The truth about your inheritance.””
I looked at Emily.
She shook her head.
Don’t answer.
Richard continued.
“Your father knew people would come after you.””
“People like you?””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“People like me were only useful because your father trusted us.””
I felt anger rising.
“Don’t talk about my father.””
“Why?””
“Because you betrayed him.””
A pause.
Then something unexpected.
Richard laughed.
Not mockingly.
Sadly.
“Your father betrayed you first.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Emily stepped closer.
“Claire, don’t listen.””
Richard heard her.
“Emily.””
The way he said her name made her freeze.
“You were always emotional.””
Emily’s face changed.
“You ruined everything.””
Richard laughed.
“No. I saved you.””
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Nobody answered.
That terrified me.
“Emily?””
She looked away.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me.””
Richard spoke through the phone.
“Ask her why she disappeared.””
Emily closed her eyes.
I stared at her.
“You said you were protecting me.””
“I was.””
“Then why is he saying this?””
Silence.
And that silence hurt.
Because Emily had been the one person I thought came back with the truth.
Now even she had secrets.
Richard continued.
“Everyone around you has lied, Claire.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Margaret.
Then Emily.
He was right.
Everyone had.
“You want to know why they failed?””
I didn’t answer.
“You were never weak.””
His voice changed.
“You were always the problem.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You were impossible to control.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because for the first time, his words didn’t sound like an insult.
They sounded like a confession.
“You built a company without them.””
He continued.
“You survived without them.””
“You trusted people despite everything.””
His voice became colder.
“And that is why they needed you to believe you needed them.””
I looked at the phone.
“Why are you telling me this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I’m giving you a chance.””
I almost laughed.
“A chance?””
“Yes.””
“To do what?””
“Walk away.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“Leave the house. Leave Daniel. Leave the money. Leave everything.””
I stared.
“You’re threatening me.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“I’m warning you.””
A chill ran through me.
“About what?””
Richard answered:
“Tomorrow morning, the final documents will be filed.””
My heart sank.
“What documents?””
“The ones that prove Daniel was never your enemy.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
Confused.
Richard continued.
“The person who betrayed you first was someone else.””
My breathing stopped.
“What are you saying?””
“You’ve spent all night looking at your husband.””
A pause.
“But you never asked the most important question.””
I gripped the phone.
“What question?””
Richard whispered:
“Who changed your father’s will?””
The line went dead.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Then Emily slowly sat down.
Her face was pale.
“Claire…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“There’s something I never told you.””
My heart sank.
Of course.
Another secret.
She reached into her bag.
This time, her hands were shaking.
“I didn’t disappear because Richard found out I was investigating him.””
She looked at me.
“I disappeared because I found the original will.””
I stared.
“The original will?””
She nodded.
“And Claire…”
Her voice broke.
“Your father didn’t leave everything to you.””
I felt the room spinning.
“What?””
Emily looked toward the dark staircase.
Then whispered:
“He left everything to the person he believed would protect you.””
A pause.
“And that person…”
May you like
She looked at Daniel.
“…was your husband.””
