Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Smile

Adrian’s face had changed before he even finished the phone call.

I had seen him angry.

I had seen him arrogant.

I had seen him cold.

But I had never seen him confused.

Not truly confused.

The kind of confusion that comes when someone realizes the entire story they believed might have been a lie.

He slowly lowered his phone.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

He didn’t answer.

She smiled nervously.

“Adrian?””

Still nothing.

The silence stretched.

Then she laughed softly.

“Don’t tell me this is another attempt to scare me.””

But Adrian wasn’t looking at her anymore.

He was looking at me.

And that frightened her.

“What did they tell you?”” I asked.

His throat moved.

“The board found something.””

Vanessa’s expression tightened.

“Found what?””

Adrian looked back at her.

“Information.””

She stepped closer.

“About what?””

He didn’t respond.

That was when I knew.

Whatever my father’s team had uncovered, it was something Adrian never expected.

And for once, it wasn’t about me.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Adrian, talk to me.””

He pulled away.

The movement was small.

Almost unnoticeable.

But I saw it.

And so did she.

Her face changed.

A woman like Vanessa could handle anger.

She could handle accusations.

But rejection?

That was different.

“What are you doing?”” she asked quietly.

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m trying to understand.””

“Understand what?””

He held up his phone.

“They found inconsistencies.””

She laughed.

“Inconsistencies?””

“Yes.””

Her smile disappeared.

“About me?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

The confidence returned.

“You’re overreacting.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

She shook her head.

“This is exactly what Evelyn wants.””

I watched her carefully.

There it was.

The instinct to attack.

The instinct to redirect blame.

Vanessa had spent years surviving by controlling the room.

But now the room belonged to nobody.

Not even her.

“You’re saying this is my fault?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“You’re enjoying this.””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

I looked at Adrian.

“I’m watching you finally see what I saw.””

Adrian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wanted him to discover it himself.

I wanted him to feel what I felt.

The shock.

The betrayal.

The moment when someone you trusted became a stranger.

His phone rang again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Hello?””

A pause.

“Yes, I’m listening.””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then toward me.

“What?””

The room became still.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his voice dropped.

“Send me everything.””

He ended the call.

Vanessa looked frightened now.

“What did they say?””

Adrian walked toward the dining table.

He picked up a tablet.

His fingers moved quickly.

Then he stopped.

His face became pale.

“What is it?”” Vanessa whispered.

He didn’t respond.

I watched him scroll.

Read.

Scroll again.

Then slowly put the tablet down.

“Who are you?””

The question was directed at Vanessa.

She froze.

“What?””

“Who are you?””

Her expression hardened.

“Adrian, don’t do this.””

“No.””

His voice was different.

Not angry.

Broken.

“Answer me.””

She looked at me.

Then back at him.

“I’m Vanessa.””

He stared.

“That’s not what I asked.””

The room felt colder.

“Your name is Vanessa Whitmore,” he said.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“But the records say something else.””

Silence.

I watched her face carefully.

For the first time, her perfect expression cracked.

“What records?””

Adrian laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“The ones showing that Vanessa Whitmore disappeared from her family’s company three years ago.””

Her breathing changed.

I noticed.

So did Adrian.

“You told me you came from a wealthy family.””

“I did.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You told me your family owned several properties.””

“They do.””

“You told me you had investors.””

“I do.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Then why does every financial record lead to someone else?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who paid for your apartment?””

No answer.

“Who funded your lifestyle?””

Still nothing.

“Who introduced you to my company?””

Her silence became the answer.

I crossed my arms.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“You knew she was hiding something.””

His eyes hardened.

“How?””

“Because people like Vanessa don’t appear by accident.””

She looked at me.

“You think you’re so smart.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I think I paid attention.””

For three years, Vanessa had tried to become invisible whenever she needed to.

But she always left small traces.

The expensive gifts she couldn’t explain.

The sudden access to private meetings.

The way certain executives treated her with fear instead of respect.

I had noticed.

I just didn’t know why.

Now I did.

Adrian grabbed the tablet again.

“There’s more.””

Vanessa’s face went completely white.

“Adrian.””

He looked at the screen.

“She wasn’t working for herself.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He turned the tablet toward us.

A name appeared.

A company.

A person.

Someone I recognized.

Someone my father had warned me about years ago.

My eyes narrowed.

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“You know them?””

I stared at the screen.

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“Everyone in my father’s world knows them.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“Am I?””

She said nothing.

Because she knew.

I had finally connected the pieces.

Vanessa had not entered Adrian’s life because she loved him.

She had been placed there.

The pregnancy.

The affair.

The rumors.

The pressure.

None of it was random.

Someone had wanted Adrian weak.

Someone had wanted him distracted.

And someone had wanted me gone.

Adrian looked at me.

“Who is behind this?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I was thinking about something else.

The night before my wedding.

The conversation I overheard.

Adrian saying he needed my family’s influence.

Vanessa knowing exactly how to manipulate him.

The timing.

Everything.

Then I understood.

She wasn’t the beginning.

She was part of something bigger.

“She was never your mistress.””

Adrian looked confused.

“What?””

I stared at Vanessa.

“She was a weapon.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You’re wrong.””

But her voice lacked confidence.

Adrian looked between us.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“This isn’t possible.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because she loved me.””

The words came out automatically.

And that was when I realized something.

Even after everything…

Even after learning Vanessa lied…

Part of him still wanted to believe.

Because admitting Vanessa used him meant admitting he was wrong twice.

First about me.

Then about her.

I stepped closer.

“Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t miss her.””

His expression changed.

“You miss the person you thought she was.””

Silence.

A tear escaped Vanessa’s eye.

But I didn’t know if it was real.

With her, I no longer trusted anything.

Then the front doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark suit walked into the hall.

Behind him were two attorneys carrying files.

Adrian recognized one of them.

His face changed.

“Why is my lawyer here?””

The man didn’t look at him.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Laurent.””

The title felt strange.

I hadn’t used it in years.

“Yes?””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“Your father asked me to deliver this personally.””

Adrian stared.

“What is that?””

I opened it.

Inside was a single document.

One page.

One signature.

One name.

And when I read it, I finally understood the final move my father had planned.

Because Adrian wasn’t just losing his company.

He wasn’t just losing his reputation.

He was about to lose the one thing he believed could never be taken away.

His ownership.

At the bottom of the document was a transfer agreement.

Signed three years ago.

The day before our wedding.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the signature.

Not mine.

Not my father’s.

Adrian’s.

And beneath it was a clause he had never noticed.

A clause that meant if he ever betrayed me…

Everything he built would legally belong to me.

I looked up.

Adrian was watching my face.

“What does it say?””

I folded the paper.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

I answered quietly.

“It says your empire was never yours.””

And behind Vanessa’s terrified expression…

May you like

I saw something even more frightening.

She already knew.
