Chapter 6: The Last Witness

My mother's voice came through the tiny recorder again.

“Daniel Vale was not murdered alone.””

I couldn't move.

Rain whispered through the broken greenhouse windows. Somewhere behind me, Lillian was crying.

Arthur stepped onto the floor above the cellar.

“Evelyn?””

I pointed at the recorder.

“Don't touch it.””

He stopped.

The tape continued.

“Your father believed Daniel's death was an accident until the morning after the funeral. Then he found the second set of records.””

I stared at the speaker.

My mother sounded exactly as I remembered.

Warm.

Measured.

Almost impossibly calm.

But there was fear underneath her words.

“The men responsible for Daniel's death did not work alone. One was inside the police department. One worked for the bank. And one was the man your father had trusted to build a company from nothing.””

Julian.

My fingers curled into fists.

Arthur looked at me.

“Your mother knew.””

“She knew everything.””

The tape crackled.

“She also knew that Julian was planning to use you.””

I closed my eyes.

The next sentence cut deeper.

“He did not choose Evelyn because she was easy to deceive. He chose her because she was the only person who could legally access the money Julian needed.””

Arthur turned sharply.

“The trust.””

My mother's voice continued.

“Evelyn, you were never the real owner of the Boston property.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

Arthur looked at me.

“That's what the letter said.””

The recorder clicked.

“My parents left the townhouse in your name, but the property was connected to a private family trust. The trust contained documents, securities, and assets that Julian needed access to.””

I stared at Arthur.

“How much?””

The tape answered before he could.

“Enough to destroy him.””

I felt something cold move through my chest.

The money from the townhouse had never been the entire story.

It had only been the key.

My mother continued.

“After your father discovered Julian's financial scheme, he moved the trust records somewhere Julian could not find them.””

I looked toward the hidden room.

“The house.””

“Yes.””

“The records are here?””

“Some of them.””

Arthur stepped closer to the recorder.

“Then where are the rest?””

The tape crackled.

“Evelyn, listen carefully. The person who has protected these records for seventeen years is not someone you have met.””

I frowned.

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

Then my mother's voice said:

“His name is Arthur.””

The room went still.

I turned toward him.

Arthur looked genuinely shocked.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Your name.””

“My full name is Arthur Hale.””

The recorder continued.

“I trusted Arthur Hale because he was young enough to be overlooked and stubborn enough not to frighten easily.””

Arthur swallowed.

“I was twenty-seven.””

“You worked for my father.””

“Yes.””

“But you told me you met Julian later.””

“I did.””

“Then why did my mother know you?””

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Arthur.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I knew your father.””

“How?””

“He hired me to audit one of Julian's shell companies.””

“You lied to me.””

“I didn't know how much you knew.””

“I knew nothing.””

“I know.””

The tape played on.

“Arthur was supposed to deliver the evidence to me. He never did.””

Arthur's face went pale.

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I was being followed.””

I stared at him.

“By whom?””

“Julian.””

The tape continued.

“Daniel's records were split into three parts. One was hidden in the house. One was given to Arthur. And one was delivered to someone Julian never suspected.””

A pause.

Then:

“Me.””

I felt my breath catch.

My mother had the third part.

But she had been dead for seventeen years.

At least, I thought she was.

I looked at Lillian.

She shook her head slowly.

“My mother wasn't talking about herself.””

“What?””

“She meant someone else.””

Arthur stepped toward her.

“How do you know?””

“Because my mother told me.””

The room went quiet.

“Where?”” I asked.

“She came to see me last year.””

“Your mother is alive.””

“Yes.””

“Then why has she been hiding?””

Lillian looked at the recorder.

“Because she says Julian is still looking for her.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door slammed.

Arthur moved to the window.

“Someone's here.””

I looked through the glass.

A black sedan had stopped outside.

Not Julian's SUV.

An older model.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

She stood in the rain without an umbrella.

Lillian stopped breathing.

“Mom.””

The woman looked toward the greenhouse.

Then toward me.

I felt the world tilt.

Mara Vale walked through the rain.

Arthur whispered, “No.””

Mara reached the greenhouse door.

She did not knock.

She simply opened it.

Her eyes met mine.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “You look like your mother.””

My throat tightened.

“And you look nothing like a woman who vanished eleven years ago.””

A faint smile touched her lips.

“That's because I didn't vanish.””

Lillian ran to her.

Mara caught her daughter and held her tightly.

“You shouldn't have come here,” she whispered.

“I had to.””

“You were supposed to wait.””

“I couldn't.””

Mara looked over Lillian's shoulder at me.

“Then it's already begun.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

Mara released Lillian.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because Julian knows this room exists.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“How?””

Mara looked at him.

“He always knew.””

“Then why did he never find it?””

“Because he believed your father hid the evidence under the house.””

She looked at the floor.

“He never searched above it.””

My eyes went to the recorder.

“You left that?””

Mara shook her head.

“Your mother did.””

“But she's dead.””

Mara's expression changed.

“Yes.””

“Then how did she make the tape?””

“She made several.””

“Before she died?””

“Yes.””

“Why did she know Julian would send me back here?””

Mara looked at me.

“Because she knew exactly what kind of man he was.””

My chest tightened.

“Did my mother know you?””

“She did.””

“How?””

“She came to me after Daniel died.””

I stared at her.

“What did she want?””

“To know if Julian had anything to do with his death.””

“And?””

Mara's eyes hardened.

“She already knew.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“Did Julian kill Daniel?””

Mara looked directly at him.

“No.””

The answer surprised all of us.

Arthur frowned.

“Then who did?””

Mara was silent.

“Tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel was supposed to meet your father the night he died.””

“For what?””

“To hand over evidence.””

“The records.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“Julian found out.””

I waited.

“Julian didn't kill him himself. He hired someone.””

“Who?””

Mara's gaze dropped.

“He was driving the car.””

My skin prickled.

“Who was driving?””

Mara took a breath.

“Your father's attorney.””

I froze.

The same attorney who had witnessed my supposed transfer of ownership.

The same attorney who had represented Julian for seventeen years.

“The man downstairs?””

Arthur's eyes widened.

“He came with Julian.””

Mara nodded.

“He has been cleaning up Julian's mistakes ever since.””

I looked at the recorder.

“How do you know?””

“Because Daniel told me.””

“He told you before he died?””

“No.””

She reached into her coat and removed a small cassette tape.

“He left me this.””

Arthur took a step forward.

“Another recording?””

Mara nodded.

“This is his last conversation.””

I stared at the cassette.

“Where did he hide it?””

“In my daughter's crib.””

Lillian looked at her mother.

“You never told me.””

“You were a child.””

Mara looked at me.

“He knew he was going to die.””

A terrible silence settled over us.

“Then why didn't he run?””

“He believed your father could stop Julian.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“My father couldn't stop him.””

“No.””

Mara's voice softened.

“He tried.””

She reached into her coat again and pulled out a photograph.

This one showed my father standing beside Daniel.

There was a date on the back.

The day before Daniel died.

I stared at the picture.

Then I noticed something in the background.

The black sedan.

The same one from the photograph of me selling the townhouse.

My stomach dropped.

“That's the car.””

Mara looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Who owned it?””

She hesitated.

“Your husband.””

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“The plate.””

I checked it.

The license number was visible.

Arthur took out his phone.

His fingers moved quickly.

“It's registered to Mercer Strategic Holdings.””

I looked at Mara.

“You said Julian didn't kill Daniel.””

“He didn't have to.””

“Then who did?””

Mara's eyes filled with something between anger and grief.

“The man who was sitting in Julian's car.””

“Who?””

She looked at Arthur.

Then at me.

“The first person who knew about your inheritance.””

Arthur frowned.

“I don't understand.””

Mara's voice dropped.

“Your father.””

I shook my head.

“My father knew about it.””

“Yes.””

“But he loved me.””

“He did.””

“Then why would he—”

Mara interrupted me.

“Because your father wasn't protecting Julian.””

She looked toward the hidden cellar.

“He was protecting you.””

I couldn't breathe.

“From what?””

Mara's eyes met mine.

“From your own inheritance.””

Arthur's face hardened.

“What's inside the trust?””

Mara hesitated.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Proof that Julian's company never belonged to Julian.””

My heart pounded.

“Then who did it belong to?””

Mara looked at me.

“You.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My twenty-eight percent?””

“Not twenty-eight.””

She stepped closer.

“The entire company.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Arthur whispered, “That's impossible.””

Mara shook her head.

“It's written in the original trust.””

I looked at the shelves.

At the boxes.

At Julian's name on the highest one.

Then Mara said something that made me stop breathing.

“The reason Julian married you wasn't because he wanted your money.””

She paused.

“He wanted you to unknowingly give him control of a company that was legally yours.””

A vehicle stopped outside.

Headlights swept across the greenhouse walls.

Mara turned toward the sound.

“He found us.””

Arthur reached for the lights.

Lillian grabbed my hand.

And in the darkness, Mara whispered the last thing I expected to hear.

“Evelyn, the man Julian brought with him isn't his lawyer.””

I stared at her.

“Then who is he?””

May you like

Mara's voice trembled.

“He's the man who killed Daniel Vale.””
