Chapter 4: The Second Signature

The police officer took my phone before I could read the message again.

“Who sent this?””

“My husband.””

“Daniel Bennett?””

“Yes.””

She read the text, then handed the phone to her partner.

The younger officer frowned.

“Who is Richard?””

“My attorney.””

“Your attorney?””

I hesitated.

“I just met him tonight.””

The officer looked at me carefully.

“Then how does he have information about your husband’s family trust?””

“Because he represents the trust.””

That answer seemed to change the entire room.

The woman officer glanced at the papers spread across the bed.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

I took a breath.

“My husband told me every flight to Boston was sold out. He booked a train instead. When we boarded, I discovered he and his sister had first-class seats and I had coach.””

“And you had no seat?””

“Not for most of the trip.””

“You were standing?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“About six hours.””

The officer's lips pressed into a thin line.

“And then?””

“I got off at Albany.””

“Without telling your husband?””

“Yes.””

“And now he knows where you are?””

“I don't know how.””

The officer looked at the note.

“You received this after arriving?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone threaten you before tonight?””

I shook my head.

Then I stopped.

“One thing.””

“What?””

“Before we left Chicago, Daniel said I needed to sign some papers before New Year's.””

“What papers?””

I held up the folder.

“These.””

The officer scanned the first page.

Her partner leaned closer.

“Ma'am, this is a legal document.””

“I know.””

“And you've already signed it?””

“No.””

“Good.””

He pointed at the signature line.

“Don't.””

“I won't.””

The female officer looked at me.

“Do you have somewhere else you can stay tonight?””

“No.””

“Family?””

“My parents live in Michigan.””

“Friends?””

I thought about it.

Then I remembered someone.

“My college roommate. Rebecca.””

“Call her.””

I shook my head.

“She lives in Boston.””

The officer's eyebrows lifted.

“Boston?””

“Yes.””

“That's where you were headed?””

I nodded.

“Can she meet you there?””

“I don't know.””

Before I could say anything else, the phone rang.

Richard.

The officer gestured for me to answer on speaker.

I did.

“Claire,” Richard said immediately.

“Are the police there?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

The female officer introduced herself.

“Detective Morales.””

“Richard Hale.””

“Mr. Hale, my client received a threatening note.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“I advised her to call you.””

Detective Morales glanced at me.

“Mr. Hale, my client just received a message saying someone she knows signed the trust amendment.””

“I was afraid that would happen.””

My stomach tightened.

“Richard,” I said, “tell them.””

He was silent.

Then:

“The second signature belongs to Vanessa Marlowe.””

I stared at the phone.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why would Vanessa sign it?””

“Because she was involved.””

“Involved in what?””

“Daniel's financial transfers.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I sat down.

Detective Morales pulled a chair closer.

“Mr. Hale, let's slow this down. Are you saying Daniel and Vanessa have been moving money from the family trust?””

“Not exactly.””

“Then explain.””

Richard hesitated.

“The trust was originally controlled by Daniel's father. After his death, Daniel became the primary administrator. But the trust has safeguards. Vanessa is the secondary administrator.””

“Which means?””

“Neither sibling can independently move certain protected assets.””

I looked at the contract.

“Then why do they need me?””

“Because the amendment changes the structure.””

“How?””

Richard's voice lowered.

“It allows them to shift control outside the family if both parties have a legal release.””

My blood went cold.

“And I'm the release?””

“Yes.””

“That's why Daniel married me?””

No one answered.

I looked at Detective Morales.

“Did you hear that?””

“I did.””

“That's insane.””

“It may be,” she said, “but we need evidence.””

Richard spoke again.

“There is more.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

“The person who drafted the amendment wasn't me.””

“Who was it?””

“Vanessa's attorney.””

I stared at the wall.

“So Vanessa knew.””

“Yes.””

“She knew what Daniel was doing.””

“Yes.””

“She helped him.””

“Yes.””

“And she still sat there eating steak while I stood in the train aisle.””

Richard's voice turned cold.

“She wanted you isolated.””

A strange calm settled over me.

Not fear.

Not yet.

Something sharper.

Understanding.

I thought about Vanessa smiling at me.

The way she had said, Somebody will get off eventually.

The way she had laughed when Daniel joked about my standing.

She knew.

She had known exactly how the trip was going to go.

I stood.

“Then why is she warning Daniel about me?””

Richard paused.

“She may be trying to protect herself.””

I looked at the message again.

*Ask Richard who else signed the amendment before you decide to trust him.*

“That doesn't sound like a confession,” I said.

“No,” Richard replied.

“It sounds like a warning.””

“Yes.””

“From Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“But if Vanessa signed it…”

“She may have realized the amendment could expose her too.””

Detective Morales stood.

“Where is your husband now?””

“I don't know.””

“Do you think he's coming here?””

I looked at the blocked door.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants the papers.””

The detective nodded.

“Then let's make sure he doesn't get them.””

We moved to a different room.

The hotel manager gave me access to a conference suite on the first floor, with three security cameras outside and a locked service entrance.

I sat at a long wooden table while Detective Morales reviewed every document.

My suitcase sat beside me.

The room smelled faintly of coffee and printer paper.

It was almost midnight.

New Year's Eve was less than forty-eight hours away.

And I had never felt farther from celebration.

My phone buzzed.

Rebecca.

I stared at her name.

Then answered.

“Claire?””

Her voice was breathless.

“Where are you?””

“How did you know?””

“Your number showed up on my caller ID. I almost didn't answer because it's nearly midnight.””

I swallowed.

“I'm in Albany.””

“What?””

“I got off the train.””

There was a pause.

“Did something happen?””

I looked at Detective Morales.

“Yes.””

Rebecca was silent.

“Is the baby okay?””

My hand went to my stomach.

“Yes.””

“Oh, thank God.””

“I need somewhere to stay.””

“You know you can come here.””

“I'm not going to Boston.””

“Then I'll come to you.””

The words came immediately.

No hesitation.

No questions.

I closed my eyes.

“Rebecca…”

“Claire, don't argue. Tell me where you are.””

I gave her the hotel name.

“I'll leave in twenty minutes.””

“You don't have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

“You have work tomorrow.””

“Claire.””

Her voice softened.

“You called me after midnight. That's all the explanation I need.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Thank you.””

“I'm bringing food.””

Despite everything, I laughed.

“Why?””

“Because you sound like you haven't eaten in twelve hours.””

“I haven't.””

“I knew it.””

She paused.

Then asked quietly, “Is Daniel the reason?””

I looked across the room at the contract.

“Yes.””

Her voice changed.

“What did he do?””

“I'll tell you when you get here.””

“Okay.””

She hesitated.

“Claire?””

“Yeah?””

“Don't go anywhere alone.””

The call ended.

Detective Morales looked at me.

“She sounds like a good friend.””

“She is.””

Morales returned her attention to the papers.

“Did your husband ever mention Marlowe Holdings?””

“Constantly.””

“How?””

“He said his family owned several businesses.””

“Did you know about the trust?””

“No.””

“Did he ever ask you to open bank accounts?””

“No.””

“Transfer money?””

“No.””

“Sign contracts?””

“Not like this.””

She nodded.

“Then we have something important.””

“What?””

“The timing.””

She tapped the document.

“You said he became increasingly controlling during your pregnancy?””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

“When did that start?””

“About six months ago.””

Morales exchanged a glance with her partner.

“Same time as the trust amendment.””

I felt sick.

“So all of it began then.””

“Maybe.””

“No.””

I looked up.

“All of it did.””

The missed dinners.

The sudden business trips.

The strange phone calls.

The passwords he changed.

The way he became irritated whenever I asked where he had been.

The insistence that I stop working.

The new bank account he said was “for household expenses.””

The envelope he kept locked inside his desk.

Every memory seemed to rearrange itself.

Detective Morales asked, “What was in the account?””

“I don't know.””

“Why did he insist you stop working?””

“He said I needed to focus on the baby.””

“And did you?””

“Yes.””

“Did you have access to your joint finances?””

“Some.””

“Could he move money without you?””

“I think so.””

She wrote something down.

Then she looked at me.

“Claire, I need you to be very careful about what you sign from this point forward.””

“I understand.””

“Do not sign anything from Daniel. Do not speak to him alone. And don't let anyone tell you that you're overreacting.””

I stared at her.

The last sentence hit me hardest.

Because it sounded almost exactly like something I had needed to hear for months.

At 12:41 a.m., someone tried the conference suite door.

Security stopped him.

I knew before they told me who it was.

Daniel.

He was in the lobby.

Demanding to see his wife.

Detective Morales walked out with another officer.

I stayed behind the glass wall.

I could see Daniel from where I sat.

He looked nothing like the man from the train.

No relaxed smile.

No wine.

No smug laughter.

His coat was soaked from the snow.

His hair was disheveled.

His face was pale.

He looked afraid.

Then Vanessa appeared beside him.

She was crying.

Actually crying.

I almost didn't recognize her.

Daniel pointed toward the conference room.

Vanessa shook her head.

They argued.

Then Daniel suddenly looked through the glass.

Straight at me.

Our eyes met.

He stopped speaking.

His expression changed.

For one second, I thought I saw the husband I had loved.

Then he mouthed three words.

*You don't understand.*

I stood.

Detective Morales stepped between us.

Daniel shouted something I couldn't hear.

Then Vanessa looked toward me.

And she raised one hand.

Not waving.

Pointing.

At Daniel.

Then at the floor.

Then she made a small motion across her throat.

My breath caught.

Was she threatening him?

Warning me?

Before I could understand, Detective Morales approached her.

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

She jerked away.

And suddenly, right there in the hotel lobby, his carefully controlled mask shattered.

“Don't say anything!”” he shouted.

Every person in the lobby turned.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You said she would sign!””

Daniel went completely still.

My stomach dropped.

Detective Morales turned sharply.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa's face went white.

Daniel grabbed her wrist again.

“Stop.””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

And whispered something the lobby cameras caught clearly.

“I didn't know you were going to kill her.””

The entire room went silent.

May you like

Daniel released her.

And for the first time in our marriage, I saw real fear in his eyes.
