Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Signature

“Your husband, ma'am.””

The bank officer's words kept echoing in my ears long after the call ended.

Daniel stood in front of me, his face drained of color, while Emma and Lily began crying in unison. Their tiny voices cut through the silence, reminding me that whatever happened next, I still had two helpless children depending on me.

I adjusted Emma against my shoulder and stared at the man I had once trusted with my life.

“You signed my name?””

Daniel glanced toward the people walking past us.

“Not here, Anna.””

“You signed my name on a loan application?””

“Keep your voice down.””

“Did you or did you not?””

He reached for my arm, but I stepped back.

“Don't touch me.””

His jaw tightened. He looked around again, then forced a smile at a passing family as if we were having an ordinary disagreement.

“Listen to me,” he whispered.

“The bank is making this sound worse than it is. I was handling some paperwork, and your signature was needed. I had your permission to use your documents.””

“You had permission to use my identification for tax records. You did not have permission to sign a loan guarantee.””

“You don't understand how business works.””

I almost laughed.

“I understand that you lied to me. I understand that you kissed another woman in front of me. And now I understand that you may have put our home at risk without my knowledge.””

“May have?”” He shook his head impatiently.

“The loan is under control.””

“Then why is the bank investigating fraud?””

For the first time, he looked away.

That was answer enough.

I ended the call and immediately saved the bank officer's number. Then I opened my messages and took screenshots of every conversation in which Daniel had asked me for documents, promised to return home, or discussed our finances.

His eyes followed my movements.

“What are you doing?””

“Protecting myself.””

“Anna, don't be stupid. Whatever you think you have, you don't understand the full picture.””

“Then explain it.””

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“The company needed money. A major contract fell through, and I had to cover payroll. If I didn't, people would lose their jobs.””

“With money borrowed against our house?””

“It was temporary!””

“And the forged signature?””

He went silent.

A cold breeze swept through the terminal as the automatic doors opened. I could smell the salt in the air, mixed with the scent of coffee from a nearby kiosk.

Three months earlier, I had imagined Daniel stepping through those doors and rushing to hold our daughters.

Now he was standing before me, explaining why he had used my identity to secure a debt I knew nothing about.

I felt something inside me break, but it wasn't my heart this time.

It was the last piece of trust I had been desperately trying to preserve.

“I'm taking the girls home,” I said.

Daniel nodded too quickly.

“Good. I'll come tomorrow, and we'll talk like adults.””

“No.””

His eyebrows drew together.

“What do you mean, no?””

“I mean you will not walk into our home tomorrow as if nothing happened.””

“That's my house, too.””

“Then you should have thought about that before putting it at risk.””

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“You can't keep my daughters away from me.””

I looked down at Emma and Lily.

“They're three months old, Daniel. They need safety, stability, and someone who puts them first.””

“And I'm their father.””

“Then start acting like one.””

His expression hardened.

“You'll regret humiliating me like this.””

I turned away before he could see the tears gathering in my eyes.

I didn't want him to mistake my pain for weakness anymore.

A taxi carried us to the hotel where I had booked a room for the night. I had planned to surprise Daniel, spend a few hours together, and travel home with him the following morning.

Instead, I spent the evening warming bottles beneath a hotel lamp while my daughters slept in a borrowed crib.

When they finally settled, I sat on the edge of the bed and called my older sister, Claire.

She answered on the second ring.

“Anna? How was the surprise? Did Daniel cry when he saw the girls?””

I pressed my fingers against my mouth.

“Claire, I need you to listen to me.””

My voice broke before I could finish the sentence.

Her tone changed immediately.

“What happened?””

I told her everything.

The woman at the port. The kiss. The documents. The bank's phone call.

Claire remained silent until I finished.

Then she said, “Pack your things. I'm coming to get you.””

“You live four hours away.””

“I don't care if it takes eight. You're not staying there alone.””

I looked at my sleeping daughters.

“I don't know what to do.””

“You don't have to know tonight. Just don't sign anything. Don't agree to anything. And don't let him talk you into meeting him alone.””

I wiped my face.

“What if we lose the house?””

“Then we figure it out. But first, we find out what he did.””

Before we hung up, Claire made me promise to send her copies of every document I had.

Then I called the bank's fraud department again.

A woman named Melissa answered and confirmed that an investigation had been opened. She explained that the bank would review the signature, the application, and the security footage.

“Mrs. Mitchell, please don't assume the outcome before the review is complete,” she said.

“But we do recommend that you speak with an attorney as soon as possible.””

“Can the bank take my house?””

“That depends on the loan terms, the validity of the guarantee, and the legal findings. I can't make that determination over the phone.””

I thanked her and ended the call.

It wasn't the reassurance I wanted.

But it was the first honest answer I had received all day.

At eleven that night, Daniel began calling.

I declined the first three calls.

His messages arrived one after another.

*We need to talk.*

*You're letting strangers destroy our marriage.*

*Think about the girls before you do something stupid.*

Then came a message that made my stomach turn.

*If you tell the bank I forged your signature, you'll destroy everything I've worked for.*

I stared at the screen.

He hadn't asked whether the babies were okay.

He hadn't asked whether I had eaten.

He was worried about his business.

I took a screenshot and sent it to Claire.

Then I blocked him temporarily and placed my phone on the bedside table.

For the first time in months, I didn't spend the night waiting for his next call.

I slept for two hours, woke to feed Lily, and then slept for another hour with Emma curled against my chest.

At seven the next morning, Claire arrived with coffee, diapers, and a folder full of papers.

She hugged me in the hotel parking lot without asking me to explain anything again.

Then she helped buckle the girls into their car seats.

“We're going to my house,” she said.

“You can stay as long as you need.””

I nodded.

Just before we left, my phone rang from an unknown number.

It was Daniel.

I almost declined, but Claire touched my shoulder.

“Put it on speaker. Don't agree to anything.””

I answered.

“Anna,” Daniel said, his voice unusually calm.

“I've been thinking.””

I said nothing.

“I made mistakes. I admit that. But we can fix this if you come home.””

“What about the loan?””

“I'll handle it.””

“What about Rachel?””

A pause.

“She was a mistake.””

“And my signature?””

Another pause.

“Anna, I need you to understand something. The company is in serious trouble. If this investigation goes public, I could lose everything.””

I looked through the windshield at the road ahead.

“Then you should have thought about that before you used my name.””

His voice sharpened.

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“Maybe not. But I'm going to find out.””

I ended the call.

Claire started the car.

We had barely reached the highway when an email appeared on my phone from an address I didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: DOCUMENTS CONCERNING DANIEL MITCHELL.*

The message contained three attachments.

I opened the first.

It was a bank statement.

The second was a photograph of Daniel standing outside a building with Rachel.

The third was a copy of a document bearing my signature.

But the date at the bottom made my blood run cold.

It had been signed two weeks before Daniel's ship left on his last voyage.

Someone had been planning this long before I gave birth.

May you like

And beneath the forged signature was a second name I recognized immediately.

My father's.
