Chapter 2: The Visitor Before The Storm

The person standing outside our front door wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been part of our lives for years.

Grant stared at the security footage, his hand still wrapped around Lily’s shoulder.

The screen flickered as the video played backward.

The timestamp showed forty minutes before Victoria arrived.

A black SUV pulled up outside our house.

My heart started pounding.

Because I knew that vehicle.

I had seen it before.

“Grant…” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“You know who that is?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

The garage camera captured the driver’s door opening.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Gray jacket.

Dark sunglasses.

And even though the footage wasn’t perfectly clear, there was no mistaking him.

“Richard,” Grant said.

His voice was barely audible.

Victoria’s face changed instantly.

She looked shocked.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That was the moment I realized something.

Victoria wasn’t just trying to hurt me.

She was hiding something.

“Who is Richard?”” I asked.

Grant didn’t answer right away.

He stared at the screen like he was watching a memory he had spent years trying to forget.

“Victoria’s brother.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at him.

“Her brother?””

Grant nodded slowly.

“He’s the reason Victoria and I divorced.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Grant, don’t do this.””

He turned toward her.

“Don’t do what? Tell the truth?””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“No,” Grant said.

“I understood enough.””

Lily looked between them.

“Daddy, who is that man?””

Grant softened immediately.

“Someone who shouldn’t be here.””

But I could tell from his face that there was more.

Much more.

The video continued.

Richard stood outside our front door.

He didn’t knock.

He didn’t ring the bell.

He simply looked through the glass panel beside the door.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then Victoria’s car arrived.

She stepped out.

And the two of them spoke for several minutes.

No audio came from the camera.

But their body language told a story.

Richard was angry.

Victoria was nervous.

Then something happened.

Richard pointed toward the house.

Toward us.

Toward Lily’s bedroom window.

My stomach turned.

“What was he pointing at?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Grant paused the video.

He looked at Victoria.

“What were you two planning?””

Victoria shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“Nothing?””

Grant laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You brought my daughter’s uncle to my house, lied about Elena attacking you, and now you’re telling me it was nothing?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with frustration.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

No words came out.

For the first time since I met her, Victoria had no perfect response.

No carefully chosen excuse.

No innocent expression.

Just fear.

Grant walked closer.

“What did Richard want?””

Victoria looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Victoria.””

She stayed silent.

“Answer me.””

Finally, she whispered:

“He wanted money.””

I frowned.

“Money?””

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“From who?””

Victoria looked at him.

“You.””

The silence afterward felt heavier than anything before.

I looked at Grant.

“Why would your brother want money from you?””

Grant didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Grant always had answers.

He was the kind of person who could solve a problem at work in five minutes.

But now?

He looked lost.

Victoria noticed.

“You never told her, did you?””

Grant’s eyes moved toward her.

“Don’t.””

“Don’t what?””

Her voice became bitter.

“Don’t pretend you’re the honest one.””

I stepped between them.

“Someone needs to explain what’s happening.””

Grant closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he looked at me.

“Before I met you, Victoria and I had problems.””

I almost laughed.

“Problems?””

I looked at the footage.

“Grant, this is beyond problems.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

He sat down slowly.

“After Lily was born, Victoria changed.””

Lily hugged his arm tighter.

Grant continued carefully.

“She started spending money we didn’t have. She borrowed from people she shouldn’t have. She made promises using my name.””

Victoria looked away.

“That’s not true.””

Grant ignored her.

“When I found out, I confronted her. She said she would fix it.””

“And she didn’t,” I said quietly.

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“She made it worse.””

I looked at Victoria.

“And Richard?””

Grant nodded.

“Richard helped her hide everything.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“You make it sound so simple.””

“Because it was.””

“No,” she snapped.

Her sudden anger made Lily flinch.

Victoria noticed and immediately lowered her voice.

“I was desperate.””

Grant stared at her.

“You were reckless.””

“I was trying to protect our family.””

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Victoria looked down.

And for a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Until I remembered Lily’s terrified face.

The way Victoria had lied.

The way she had tried to make everyone believe I was dangerous.

Grant looked back at the footage.

“Why did Richard come here today?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

“Why?””

Still nothing.

Grant walked toward the screen.

Then he noticed something.

A small detail.

The camera zoomed in.

Richard wasn’t carrying a bag.

He wasn’t holding paperwork.

He wasn’t there to talk.

He was holding something small in his hand.

A key.

My blood went cold.

“Grant…”

He saw it too.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Richard doesn’t have a key to this house.””

Victoria became pale.

“Maybe the camera angle is wrong.””

Grant looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“I know that key.””

I looked at him.

“What key?””

Grant didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked upstairs.

“Where are you going?””

“To Lily’s room.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

He didn’t respond.

We followed him.

Every step felt heavier.

When we reached Lily’s bedroom, Grant immediately went to her bookshelf.

He moved a row of stuffed animals aside.

Then he opened a small wooden box.

Inside were Lily’s drawings, old birthday cards, and childhood memories.

But something else was there.

Something I had never seen before.

A tiny envelope.

Grant picked it up.

His hands were shaking.

“Where did this come from?”” I asked.

He stared at it.

“I don’t know.””

Victoria stood in the doorway.

And suddenly, she looked like she wanted to run.

Grant opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Standing outside my workplace.

Taken from across the street.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What…”

Grant looked at Victoria.

“Why does my daughter have a picture of my wife being watched?””

Victoria’s face went completely white.

“I didn’t put that there.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily quietly said something.

A sentence so soft we almost missed it.

“Mommy told me not to tell.””

Everyone turned.

Grant knelt immediately.

“Tell Daddy what?””

Lily looked scared.

“She said if I told Elena about the man outside… something bad would happen.””

My hands went cold.

“What man outside?””

Lily looked at me.

“The man who came to my window.””

A chill moved through the room.

Grant stood up slowly.

His expression changed from confusion to anger.

“Victoria.””

She backed away.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Grant shook his head.

“You’ve explained enough.””

“Grant, please.””

But he wasn’t listening anymore.

He was looking at the photograph.

At the camera footage.

At his daughter.

Then his phone rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

Grant looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Because the caller’s name appeared clearly.

Richard.

Grant hesitated.

Then he answered.

Nobody spoke at first.

Only silence.

Then a man’s voice came through the speaker.

“Grant…”

Everyone froze.

Richard continued.

“You finally found out.””

Grant gripped the phone tighter.

“What did you do?””

A low laugh came from the other end.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Stay away from my family.””

Another pause.

Then Richard said something that made my entire body go numb.

“Grant, you still think Elena is the one you need to protect?””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?”” Grant demanded.

Richard’s voice lowered.

May you like

“It means you have no idea who your wife really is.””

And then the call ended.
