Chapter 1: The Announcement That Changed Everything
"My husband brought his pregnant mistress into our living room and told me to accept that he was having a baby with another woman. What he didn't know was that I already had a medical report proving his announcement couldn't be true.""
My name is Nia Bennett.
I'm thirty-five years old, and until that afternoon, I had spent almost nine years believing my marriage was worth saving.
Now, I was standing in my own living room, watching my husband hold another woman's hand.
Marcus sat comfortably on our cream sectional sofa, wearing a fitted black shirt and the expensive watch I'd given him for our eighth anniversary.
Beside him sat Vanessa Reed.
Thirty-two years old. Long black hair. Designer handbag. Diamond earrings.
And a noticeably pregnant stomach beneath her cream maternity dress.
Marcus had one arm resting behind her shoulders. His other hand hovered protectively near her belly.
It was a familiar gesture.
He used to hold me that way whenever we talked about having children.
Now he was using it with someone else.
"Nia, sit down," Marcus said.
I remained standing.
"Why?""
He exchanged a glance with Vanessa.
Then he sighed.
"Because we need to have an adult conversation.""
Vanessa adjusted the bracelet around her wrist.
"Marcus, maybe I should explain.""
"No, baby. I'll handle it.""
Baby.
That one word landed harder than the announcement itself.
Marcus turned toward me.
"Vanessa is pregnant. The baby is mine.""
For several seconds, the air conditioner was the only thing I could hear.
Nine years of marriage.
Nine years of birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and promises.
Nine years of fertility appointments and whispered prayers.
And now my husband was sitting in our home with another woman, expecting me to accept his betrayal like an inconvenient change of address.
I looked at Vanessa.
"How long?""
She tilted her head.
"Excuse me?""
"How long have you been sleeping with my husband?""
Her expression tightened.
Marcus immediately intervened.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
I almost laughed.
He had brought his mistress into our living room, but somehow I was the one being disrespectful.
Vanessa placed a hand over her stomach.
"We didn't plan this, Nia. Sometimes things happen.""
"Things?""
"Marcus and I fell in love.""
Marcus squeezed her shoulder.
"She's carrying my child. I won't abandon her.""
I looked at him.
"And what about me?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.""
"More difficult?""
"Nia, we're adults. You and I have been struggling for years. Maybe this is simply how life was supposed to turn out.""
I stared at him.
He had blamed my work schedule for our infertility.
He had blamed my stress.
He had blamed my inability to relax.
And now he was using the very thing that had nearly destroyed my confidence as an excuse to celebrate another woman's pregnancy.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"I hope you understand that I'm not trying to take anything from you.""
I glanced around the room.
The sofa beneath her.
The photographs on the walls.
The house I had spent years helping Marcus renovate.
Then I looked back at her.
"You're sitting in my home, wearing a dress bought with money my husband earned while lying to me. And you're telling me you're not taking anything?""
Her smile disappeared briefly.
Marcus stood.
"Enough, Nia.""
I didn't move.
"You're right. Enough.""
I reached for the folded medical report in my hand.
For the past eleven days, that document had been sitting inside my bedside drawer.
I'd read it so many times that I could practically recite every line.
I placed it on the glass coffee table.
"Before you announce anything else, Marcus, I think you should read this.""
He barely glanced at it.
"What is that?""
"Your medical report.""
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
He reached for the papers and unfolded them.
His eyes moved across the first page.
Then the second.
His fingers tightened around the edges.
"What the hell is this?""
"Independent laboratory results.""
"Where did you get these?""
"From the records you finally authorized me to access last month.""
He looked up sharply.
For three years, Marcus had insisted that his fertility tests were inconclusive.
He had refused the first specialist's recommendation to undergo further testing.
When he eventually agreed, he told me everything was normal.
But eleven days ago, while reviewing the documents from our old fertility clinic, I discovered something strange.
His original laboratory results had never been included in the records he showed me.
There was a separate file.
It contained the results of two tests, performed months apart.
Both showed severe male-factor infertility.
The third assessment, conducted by an independent specialist, confirmed the same findings.
I remembered sitting in Dr. Helen Carter's office when she explained the results.
"Mrs. Bennett, I want to be very careful with my wording," she'd said.
I had gripped the arms of my chair.
"Please tell me the truth.""
She turned the report toward me.
"Your husband's samples showed azoospermia. We found no sperm cells in either specimen.""
I had swallowed.
"Does that mean he can never have children?""
"Not necessarily. Further investigations may identify treatment options. But natural conception would be extraordinarily unlikely based on these findings.""
That was the moment my entire understanding of our marriage began to change.
Because Marcus had known.
He had known while blaming me.
He had known while watching me take medication.
He had known while telling his mother that I was the reason they didn't have grandchildren.
And now he was claiming another woman's unborn child as his own.
Back in the living room, Marcus dropped the report onto the table.
"These tests could be wrong.""
I nodded.
"That's why I requested independent testing.""
Vanessa shifted beside him.
"What is she talking about?""
I looked at her.
"Your boyfriend has been diagnosed with severe male-factor infertility. Three separate assessments have confirmed that no viable sperm were found in his samples.""
Her face changed.
Marcus turned toward me.
"Stop twisting medical information!""
"I'm reading what's written.""
Vanessa slowly moved her hand away from his.
"Marcus?""
He didn't look at her.
"Don't listen to her.""
"But you told me—"
"I said don't listen to her!""
Vanessa stood.
For the first time since she'd entered my house, she looked frightened.
I watched her carefully.
Then I noticed something strange.
She wasn't looking at Marcus anymore.
Her eyes had moved toward the hallway leading to his private office.
Marcus followed her gaze.
A muscle jumped in his jaw.
"What's wrong?"" he demanded.
"Nothing.""
"Then why are you looking over there?""
Vanessa swallowed.
I turned toward the hallway.
A shadow stretched across the polished wooden floor.
Someone was standing just beyond the doorway.
Someone who had been listening to our entire conversation.
I looked back at Vanessa.
"Who is that?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus suddenly stepped between us and the hallway.
"Nobody. It's none of your business.""
But before he could say another word, a man's voice came from the doorway.
"Actually, Marcus, I think it's time she knew.""
And when the man stepped into the living room, I recognized him immediately.
It was Daniel Cross.
May you like
My husband's business partner.
And the man who had attended our wedding.
