Chapter 7: The Recording Vanessa Tried to Destroy

Margaret was halfway to her car when Officer Harris called again.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to stay where you are.””

“But my grandchildren—”

“I understand. Officers are responding to the residence. We have information suggesting there may be an immediate safety concern. Going there could interfere with the response or put you at risk.””

Margaret stopped beside her driver's door.

“Have you spoken to my son?””

“We're attempting to establish contact.””

“His last message said Vanessa knows everything.””

“I understand why that concerns you. Please keep your phone available.””

The call ended.

Margaret stood beneath the porch light, staring at the dark street.

She had spent two days begging Daniel to choose his children over his fear. Now he had apparently found something that might prove what happened to Lily at the bottom of those basement stairs.

And Vanessa knew.

Margaret returned inside and called Helen.

“I think something has happened at Daniel's house.””

Helen listened carefully, then reminded her not to go there or contact Vanessa directly. She also advised Margaret to preserve Daniel's last message and forward it to the investigator.

Margaret did exactly that.

Then she waited.

At 8:03 p.m., her phone rang.

Daniel.

“Mom?””

His voice was so faint that Margaret nearly missed it.

“Daniel! Where are you? Are you safe?””

“I'm outside. I'm in the car.””

“Where are Lily and Noah?””

“With the officers.””

Margaret pressed a hand against her chest.

“Are they all right?””

“I think so. They're checking Lily. Noah is crying, but I think he's okay.””

“What happened?””

Daniel exhaled shakily.

“Vanessa found me with the memory card. She grabbed it and tried to break it. I stopped her, and she started screaming that I was destroying her life.””

“Did she hurt you?””

“No. But she told the officers I was lying. She said I'd made everything up because I wanted to leave her.””

“Where is she now?””

“Inside the house. They're speaking with her.””

Margaret closed her eyes in relief.

“Daniel, what was on the recording?””

He didn't answer immediately.

“I saw Lily at the top of the stairs,” he said finally.

“Vanessa was standing behind her. They were arguing about something. I couldn't hear all the words, but Lily was crying.””

Margaret gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.

“Then what?””

“Vanessa grabbed her arm.””

His voice broke.

“She pulled Lily backward. Lily lost her balance, and she fell.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

For a moment, neither spoke.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “did you see Vanessa push her?””

“I saw her pull Lily. I saw Lily fall. The recording ends before I can tell whether Vanessa meant to make her fall or whether she lost control. I don't know what was in her mind.””

“Did you give the recording to the officers?””

“Yes. I didn't touch the original file after I found it. I gave them the memory card and told them exactly where I'd found it.””

Margaret sat down.

She was grateful he had preserved the evidence, but the image of Lily falling down those stairs made her feel physically ill.

“Why didn't you ever question Vanessa about the accident?””

“I did. She said Lily had run past her and slipped. I believed her because I wanted to believe her.””

“You told me Lily had been playing.””

“I repeated what Vanessa told me.””

He began crying.

“Mom, I watched that video three times before I called you. Three times. And every time I saw Lily's face before she fell, I remembered her asking me to make Vanessa stop yesterday.””

Margaret shut her eyes.

“What did you do when she fell last summer?””

“I rushed her to the hospital. Vanessa told the doctors it was an accident. Lily had a concussion and needed observation. When she woke up, she kept asking if she was in trouble.””

Margaret felt a fresh wave of anger.

“And you still let Vanessa control what happened afterward?””

Daniel didn't defend himself.

“Yes.””

The single word sounded like a confession.

“I told myself that keeping the family together was the best thing for Lily and Noah. I told myself Vanessa was stressed, that she needed help, that I could fix everything if I was patient.””

“And what did Lily learn?””

“That nobody would believe her.””

Margaret wiped her eyes.

For the first time, Daniel seemed to understand the full weight of his silence.

He had not merely failed to stop Vanessa. He had helped create a home in which his daughter believed that telling the truth was dangerous.

“Where are you going now?”” Margaret asked.

“The officers said I need to cooperate and arrange somewhere safe for the children if they're released into my care. They're still assessing the situation.””

“Don't make promises you can't keep. Follow their instructions.””

“I will.””

He paused.

“Mom, can I ask you something?””

“Yes.””

“If the children can stay somewhere else while everything is investigated, would you take them?””

Margaret's answer came without hesitation.

“Of course I would. But we'll do it through the proper process, Daniel. They need safety, stability, and adults who won't put them in the middle of this.””

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

“Yes,” he whispered.

“I think I finally do.””

At 9:17 p.m., Helen called with an update. The authorities were reviewing the recording and the other information supplied by the family. She cautioned Margaret not to treat the footage as proof of Vanessa's intent before investigators had examined it.

Margaret understood.

She didn't need to decide what Vanessa had intended.

She knew what she had witnessed with her own eyes. She knew what Lily had said. And she knew that the little girl needed protection from the circumstances that had made her afraid.

At 10:06 p.m., Daniel called again.

“They're letting me see the children while they finish the assessment,” he said.

“Lily keeps asking for you.””

“Can I speak to her?””

A moment later, a small voice came through the phone.

“Grandma?””

Margaret's tears fell immediately.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Did I do something bad?””

“No, baby. Not one thing.””

“Daddy says I told the truth.””

“You did.””

Lily sniffled.

“Is Vanessa mad?””

Margaret took a slow breath.

“The grown-ups are handling that, sweetheart. You don't have to fix anything. Your only job is to be a little girl.””

“Can I sleep at your house?””

Margaret looked toward the spare bedroom she had prepared in her mind a hundred times since hearing Lily cry.

“We're going to work with the people helping your family to make sure you're safe. I'll do everything I can to be there for you.””

“Promise?””

“I promise I'll keep helping you.””

Lily was quiet.

Then she whispered, “Grandma, there's something else.””

Margaret sat forward.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“Mommy said the video wasn't the only thing Daddy wasn't supposed to find.””

Margaret's blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?””

“I don't know. Mommy said there was another one. She said if Daddy ever found it, everybody would know what she did.””

Margaret heard Daniel ask Lily something in the background.

Then the little girl spoke again.

“She said it was in the old computer.””

Daniel returned to the phone.

“Mom, I think Vanessa had another recording.””

Margaret stared at the wall.

“Of what?””

“I don't know,” he said.

“But when the officers asked her about the memory card, she kept insisting that it wasn't the original.””

The room seemed to go silent around Margaret.

The basement recording might explain how Lily fell.

May you like

But if Vanessa had been hiding another recording, the truth could be even more complicated.

And somewhere in that house, there might still be evidence that nobody had seen.
