Chapter 3: The Family Secret Behind the Wedding
Nobody moved.
The photograph of me outside the bank sat between the makeup brushes and the scattered hairpins.
I remembered that day.
I'd gone to withdraw money from the savings account my father had left me. It was a small inheritance, nothing extraordinary, but I'd kept it untouched for years.
Marcus had known about it.
He'd encouraged me to invest it.
He'd even introduced me to his family's financial adviser.
I picked up the photograph.
"Where did you get this?""
Claire placed the folder on the vanity.
"From a private investigator.""
My stomach tightened.
"Someone followed me?""
"Yes.""
"Who hired him?""
Claire looked at Marcus.
He stared at the floor.
Patricia stepped forward.
"Claire, stop this nonsense.""
Claire didn't even turn around.
"You've had years to tell the truth, Mother. You don't get to stop me now.""
Patricia's cheeks flushed.
"You're destroying your brother's wedding.""
Claire laughed bitterly.
"His wedding? You mean the business arrangement you dressed up as a wedding?""
I looked at Marcus.
"What's she talking about?""
He shook his head.
"Don't listen to her.""
Claire opened the folder and removed a document.
"This is a copy of the agreement Marcus signed six months ago.""
I took it.
The first page carried the name of a company I recognized.
Hale Development Group.
Marcus had told me the company belonged to his father before his death. He now managed most of its operations.
"What is this?"" I asked.
Claire pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.
"Read that.""
I scanned the page.
My name appeared beside a reference to a family trust.
I read it again.
Then a third time.
The agreement outlined a proposed transfer of certain assets into a marital holding structure after the wedding.
I looked up.
"Why is my name here?""
Marcus moved toward me.
"It's a standard financial arrangement.""
Claire shook her head.
"No, it isn't.""
Patricia crossed her arms.
"Claire has no understanding of how the business operates.""
"I understand enough to know that you wanted Nia's inheritance transferred into a company controlled by Marcus.""
I stared at the document.
My father had left me money, a small investment property, and a life insurance settlement.
It wasn't enough to make anyone rich.
But it was enough to make me financially secure.
Marcus had always insisted we would keep our finances separate until we were married.
He'd said combining everything afterward would make our future easier.
I'd trusted him.
"Did you plan to take my inheritance?"" I asked.
Marcus shook his head.
"That's an ugly way to describe it.""
"Then describe it.""
"It's estate planning.""
"Without telling me?""
He lowered his voice.
"Nia, you're not experienced with these things. My mother and I were trying to make sure you wouldn't have to worry about money.""
Claire gave a short laugh.
"Listen to him. He's still pretending he's doing you a favor.""
Patricia stepped toward the folder.
"Give me that document.""
Claire moved it out of reach.
"No.""
"You stole confidential company papers.""
"I copied documents proving what you did.""
Patricia's eyes flashed.
"You have always been jealous of your brother.""
Claire's face went still.
"Jealous?""
"Yes. You couldn't stand that Marcus was trusted with the company after your father died.""
"My father died when I was twenty-four. I was the one running the business while Marcus was still asking him for an allowance.""
"Watch your mouth.""
"Or what? You'll arrange another funeral?""
Patricia slapped her.
The sound cracked through the bridal suite.
Claire's head turned slightly.
My mother gasped.
I stepped between them.
"Don't touch her.""
Patricia stared at me as if I'd committed an unforgivable offense.
"Stay out of this.""
"No. You don't get to walk into this room, attack my mother, lie about your daughter, and then tell me to stay out of it.""
Marcus grabbed my wrist.
"Nia, calm down.""
I pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
He looked around the room.
For the first time, I saw him understand that he had lost control.
The wedding planner appeared in the doorway.
"Miss Bennett? I'm sorry to interrupt, but the guests are beginning to ask questions. The ceremony is scheduled in forty-five minutes.""
I looked at her.
"Cancel it.""
She blinked.
"Excuse me?""
"The wedding. Cancel everything.""
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"Nia, don't do this.""
I handed the engagement ring to the wedding planner.
"Please inform the guests that there will be no ceremony.""
The planner glanced at Marcus.
He shook his head.
"She's upset. Give us a minute.""
I turned to the planner.
"I'm not upset. I'm finished.""
The woman nodded slowly and left.
Marcus followed her toward the door.
I called his name.
He stopped.
"Where are you going?""
"To handle this.""
"Handle what?""
"The guests. The vendors. The press.""
I stared at him.
"Of course. The press.""
He turned back.
"Nia, think about what you're doing. Our families have invested a lot in this wedding.""
"Our families?""
"Yes.""
"Then perhaps they should have spent more time building an honest marriage than organizing a beautiful party.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"You're throwing away four years over a photograph.""
I looked at Claire.
Then at the documents.
Then at my mother.
"No, Marcus. I'm throwing away four years because of what that photograph finally revealed.""
He opened his mouth.
But Claire spoke first.
"There's something else.""
I closed my eyes.
For one exhausted second, I wished there would be nothing else.
"Claire, what?""
She removed another document from the folder.
This one was a bank transfer record.
The amount was $25,000.
The recipient was Vanessa Cole.
The sender was a company called Meridian Event Consulting.
I looked at Vanessa.
She had gone completely pale.
"That's not what it looks like," she whispered.
Claire placed a second sheet beside it.
A text message.
*Patricia:* Make sure Evelyn leaves the bridal suite embarrassed. Nia needs to understand that her family doesn't belong in our circle.
*Vanessa:* What if she complains?
*Patricia:* Marcus will handle her. Just make sure the pictures look natural.
My mother's hand flew to her mouth.
I felt physically sick.
"You paid her to cut my mother's hair?""
Patricia's expression hardened.
"That message has been taken out of context.""
Claire shook her head.
"I have the original conversation.""
Vanessa suddenly began crying.
"I didn't know it would go that far.""
My mother looked at her.
"You held scissors against my head.""
"I was told to make a statement. I was supposed to cut a small section.""
"You cut half my hair.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Patricia said your daughter was becoming difficult. She said the family needed to establish boundaries before the wedding.""
I turned toward Patricia.
"Boundaries?""
She lifted her chin.
"Your mother has never understood the expectations that come with marrying into our family.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Expectations? I raised my daughter alone after her father died. I worked two jobs so she could go to college. I never asked your family for anything.""
Patricia gave her a cold look.
"And that's precisely the problem. You don't understand how these families operate.""
Evelyn's voice trembled, but she didn't lower her eyes.
"I understand how decent people operate. They don't pay strangers to humiliate someone.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus did something I never expected.
He laughed.
Not loudly.
Just a short, disbelieving sound.
"All right. Fine. Everyone has made their point.""
He turned toward Claire.
"You've always wanted to destroy me.""
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"Why would I need to destroy you when you've done such a good job yourself?""
"You left the family.""
"Because I discovered what you were doing.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You don't know anything.""
"I know about the transfers. I know about the fake investment accounts. And I know why you needed Nia's money.""
Patricia went rigid.
Marcus's expression changed.
"Claire, don't.""
I looked between them.
"What investment accounts?""
Claire opened the folder to the final section.
"There are several accounts under shell companies. Money has been moving out of Hale Development Group for years.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"Put that away.""
"No.""
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
"I have bank records, internal emails, and your signature.""
Patricia's voice dropped.
"Claire, think carefully about what happens if you release those documents.""
Claire looked at her mother.
"I've been thinking about it for three years.""
She turned to me.
"Marcus needed your inheritance because the company is in serious financial trouble. Your money would have covered some of the missing funds and helped conceal the transfers.""
I stared at the papers.
The man I'd planned to spend my life with had apparently intended to use my money to hide his own financial crimes.
"How much?"" I asked.
Claire hesitated.
"Approximately two million dollars.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Two million?""
"That's what I can prove so far.""
Marcus looked at me.
"Nia, listen. This is a family dispute. Claire has been trying to get control of the company for years.""
"Then why are you so afraid of those documents?""
He said nothing.
Claire closed the folder.
"Because I have one more thing.""
She removed a small USB drive and placed it in my palm.
"What's on this?""
"An audio recording from last night.""
Patricia lunged forward.
"Give that to me!""
Claire stepped back.
"Don't even try.""
I looked at the tiny device.
"Who recorded it?""
"Someone who worked at the hotel.""
Marcus's face had become almost colorless.
Claire glanced at him.
"Would you like to explain it, or should I let Nia hear it herself?""
He shook his head.
"Claire, please.""
For the first time, his voice sounded genuinely broken.
I inserted the drive into my laptop.
The screen flickered.
A single audio file appeared.
I clicked play.
At first, there was only background noise.
Glasses clinking.
A door closing.
Then Patricia's voice filled the room.
"Once Nia signs the papers, everything will be settled.""
Another voice answered.
Marcus.
"And Evelyn?""
Patricia gave a small laugh.
"She won't be a problem after today.""
I felt my mother's fingers tighten around mine.
Then Marcus asked a question that made my blood turn cold.
"What if Nia finds out what happened to her father?""
The recording went silent for two seconds.
Then Patricia answered.
"She never will.""
I stopped breathing.
My father had died seven years earlier in what everyone had called a tragic car accident.
I looked at Marcus.
He was staring at the laptop.
His lips had parted.
Claire slowly turned toward him.
"Nia," she whispered, "there's a reason your father was investigating Hale Development Group before he died.""
My fingers went numb.
"What are you saying?""
Claire looked directly into my eyes.
"Your father's accident wasn't an accident.""
And then she pressed another document into my hand.
At the top was my father's name.
May you like
Below it was a signature I recognized.
Marcus Hale's.
