Chapter 4: The Secret His First Wife Carried
“My name is Laura Holloway.””
The name stayed in my mind long after the call ended.
Laura.
Richard’s first wife.
A woman I had never heard about.
A woman who sounded afraid.
I stood frozen in my living room, still holding the phone against my ear even though the line had already gone quiet.
The sunlight coming through the windows felt strange.
Too normal.
That was the part that bothered me most.
The world had continued moving.
Cars passed outside.
Neighbors walked their dogs.
A bird landed on the fence in our backyard.
But my entire understanding of my family had shifted in less than a minute.
Daniel had never mentioned Laura.
Not once.
Not during our first year together.
Not when we talked about his childhood.
Not when we discussed his parents.
I knew Richard had been married before.
I knew Daniel’s mother had passed away when he was young.
But I had never heard details.
I had never asked too many questions because every time Richard came up, Daniel became quiet.
Not angry.
Not bitter.
Just quiet.
I used to think it was grief.
Now I wondered if it was something else.
My phone rang again.
Same number.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
“Emily?””
Laura’s voice was softer this time.
“Yes.””
“I’m sorry for calling you like this.””
I sat down slowly on the couch.
“You said you know what Richard did.””
A long pause followed.
“I know what he is capable of.””
The way she said it sent a chill through me.
Not hatred.
Not revenge.
Fear.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me about you?””
Another silence.
Then she said:
“Because Richard doesn’t tell stories where he’s the villain.””
I looked toward the front door.
My heart was pounding.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Laura Bennett now.””
She hesitated.
“But twenty-five years ago, I was Laura Holloway.””
I closed my eyes.
“Were you Daniel’s mother?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“Daniel’s mother came after me.””
I felt a strange sadness.
A woman who had existed before all of us.
A chapter of Richard’s life nobody talked about.
“What happened?””
Laura exhaled.
“I married Richard when I was twenty-four.””
Her voice changed as she spoke.
Like she was walking through memories she had spent years locking away.
“At first, he was charming. Confident. Everyone loved him. He walked into a room and people listened.””
That sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
“He told me I was special,” she continued.
“He said I was the only person who understood him.””
I looked down at my hands.
“That changed?””
“Yes.””
One word.
Heavy.
“Slowly.””
The room became quiet.
“He didn’t start by hurting me physically. People like Richard rarely do. They start with smaller things.””
My throat tightened.
“Like what?””
“He corrected everything.””
Her voice was distant.
“How I spoke. How I dressed. Who I talked to.
What I spent money on. He made me believe every problem was because I wasn’t trying hard enough.””
I thought about every dinner.
Every comment.
Every time Richard looked at me like I was an inconvenience.
“He made me apologize for things I didn’t do,” Laura said.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because yesterday changed everything.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“I saw the video.””
My stomach dropped.
“The slap?””
“Yes.””
Her voice shook.
“And I knew immediately.””
“Knew what?””
“That he finally crossed the line where people could see him.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Laura continued.
“Emily, Richard has always been careful.””
The word stood out.
Careful.
Not harmless.
Not misunderstood.
Careful.
“He knows how to make people believe him,” she said.
“He knows how to apologize just enough. He knows how to make himself look like the victim.””
My eyes moved to the bouquet on the table.
The white roses.
The card.
A performance.
“I saw his message,” I whispered.
Laura went silent.
“What message?””
“The flowers. He said family problems should stay private.””
Laura gave a quiet, sad laugh.
“Of course he did.””
“What?””
“That was always his favorite phrase.””
I felt my skin grow cold.
“Private?””
“Yes.””
She lowered her voice.
“Because privacy protects people like him.””
A knock suddenly sounded at the door.
I jumped.
My entire body reacted before my mind did.
For a second, I couldn’t breathe.
“Emily?””
Laura heard it.
“Are you alone?””
“Yes.””
“Don’t open the door until you know who it is.””
The warning made my heart race.
I walked slowly toward the window beside the door.
A car was parked outside.
My breath caught.
Not Daniel’s.
Black.
Expensive.
Familiar.
Richard.
“I have to go.””
“Emily, wait.””
I stopped.
“Listen to me carefully.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Whatever he says, don’t let him make you feel responsible for what he did.””
I looked at the door.
The man on the other side had spent years making me question myself.
Maybe that was why hearing those words from a stranger felt so powerful.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Then I ended the call.
Three seconds later, Richard knocked.
Not loudly.
Politely.
That almost made it worse.
“Emily?””
His voice was calm.
Controlled.
The same voice he used at family dinners.
The same voice that convinced everyone he was reasonable.
“Emily, I know you’re home.””
I didn’t answer.
“Please open the door.””
I stood there silently.
Then he sighed.
A dramatic, disappointed sigh.
“I understand you’re upset.””
My jaw tightened.
Upset.
That was what he called it.
Not hurt.
Not traumatized.
Upset.
“I only want to talk.””
I finally spoke.
“You already said enough yesterday.””
Silence.
Then:
“Emily, I know you’re emotional right now.””
My stomach twisted.
There it was.
The dismissal.
“You hit me.””
“I made a mistake.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
“I lost control.””
“You chose to.””
A pause.
For the first time, his voice changed slightly.
“You’re angry. I understand.””
“No, Richard.””
My voice became stronger.
“You don’t.””
Another pause.
“I came to apologize.””
“No.””
I stared at the door.
“You came because people saw.””
Silence.
The kind of silence that reveals the truth.
Then his voice became colder.
“You should be careful about making accusations.””
My heart sank.
There he was.
The real Richard.
Not the man pretending to apologize.
The man who threatened.
“I’m not accusing you.””
“Yes, you are.””
“No.””
I stepped closer to the door.
“I’m telling the truth.””
His breathing changed.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
The words were quiet.
Almost gentle.
A warning disguised as advice.
“Daniel doesn’t need this kind of chaos.””
My hand went to my stomach.
“You mean he doesn’t need you being exposed.””
“I mean he doesn’t need his wife destroying his relationship with his father.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“You really believe this is my fault.””
“Family is complicated.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Abuse is complicated because people like you make it complicated.””
Silence.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Ask Daniel what happened to his mother.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“You think you know everything about this family?””
I didn’t answer.
“You don’t.””
His footsteps moved away from the door.
Then he stopped.
“One day, Daniel will understand.””
The car engine started minutes later.
I remained standing there long after he left.
Because now I had two questions.
What happened to Daniel’s mother?
And why did Richard sound so certain that his own son would eventually choose him?
That evening, Daniel came home just after sunset.
The second he walked through the door, I knew something had happened.
His face was pale.
His hands were shaking slightly.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
Then back at me.
“I talked to my father.””
I waited.
“What happened?””
He walked closer.
“He didn’t apologize.””
I wasn’t surprised.
But my heart still hurt.
“What did he say?””
Daniel looked away.
“He said I was being manipulated.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“By me?””
He nodded.
“He said you were using the baby to turn me against him.””
The words were so cruel that for a moment I couldn’t respond.
Then Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in his office.””
My eyes moved to it.
“What is it?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
He handed it to me.
On the front was a name.
A name written in old handwriting.
*Laura Bennett.*
Daniel looked at me.
“How do you know that name?””
My heart sank.
Because I realized something.
Laura had not called me by accident.
She had known exactly what she was doing.
May you like
And whatever was inside that envelope…
was the reason Richard Holloway was afraid of the past coming back.
