Chapter 8: The Truth My Mother Never Got to Tell

The investigation moved quickly after that.

Too quickly.

My entire life had moved slowly for six years.

Six years of confusion.

Six years of wondering why I wasn’t enough.

Then suddenly, everything was happening at once.

Police interviews.

Financial records.

Legal meetings.

Questions about Denise.

Questions about Michael.

Questions about my mother’s final months.

But the hardest part wasn’t the investigation.

The hardest part was realizing how much of my past had been manipulated.

Every memory felt different.

Every moment had another meaning.

The day Denise moved in.

The day she told me she was excited to become my mother.

The day she convinced my father to travel more.

The day she started controlling everything.

Nothing felt real anymore.

One afternoon, my father brought me the final box from the storage unit.

“There’s something you need to see.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He placed the box on the table.

“Your mother’s last letter.””

My hands froze.

“The one Denise took?””

He nodded.

“We found it hidden inside another folder.””

I stared at the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

My mother’s handwriting.

My eyes filled instantly.

“Why didn’t she give it to me?””

My father looked down.

“Because she was afraid she wouldn’t get the chance.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

The paper smelled old.

But somehow, holding it felt like she was close.

I read the first line.

*My sweet Maya,*

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Take your time.””

I nodded.

Then I kept reading.

*If you are reading this, something happened that I hoped never would.*

My hands trembled.

*I need you to know something important. None of this was ever your fault.*

The tears came immediately.

Because those were the words I needed most.

For years, I had wondered what I did wrong.

Why Denise treated me differently.

Why I was the one left behind.

But my mother knew.

She knew I would blame myself.

The letter continued.

*Denise is very good at making people believe they need her. She creates problems, then becomes the person who solves them.*

I looked at my father.

He quietly nodded.

It was exactly what she had done.

*Arthur is a good man, but he believes the best in people. That is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness.*

A small, painful smile crossed my face.

That was my father.

Always believing.

Even when he shouldn’t.

Then I reached the part that changed everything.

*Michael contacted me before my death.*

My heart stopped.

I read the sentence again.

Michael.

*He told me Denise was planning something with him. He said she was supposed to gain access to Arthur’s finances and convince him to trust her completely.*

My father stood suddenly.

“What?””

I looked up.

“She knew.””

His face went pale.

“She knew everything.””

I continued.

*I tried to warn Arthur. But Michael discovered I was investigating them.*

The room became silent.

Then:

*If something happens to me, please understand that it was not an accident.*

I couldn’t breathe.

My father sat down hard.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No.””

The letter continued.

*Maya, you are the most important thing in my life. If I cannot protect you, I need Arthur to do what I could not.*

The page blurred through my tears.

Then came the final sentence.

The one that made my blood run cold.

*Denise knows about the account your grandmother created for you. She knows about the inheritance. That is why she wants control of you.*

I looked up.

“Inheritance?””

My father closed his eyes.

“My mother.””

“What about her?””

“She created a trust for you.””

I stared.

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Maya…”

“How much?””

His voice was quiet.

“Enough that someone would kill for it.””

The room went silent.

For years, I thought Denise hated me because I was my father’s daughter.

But I had been wrong.

I was a locked door.

A door she needed to open.

The next day, the police called.

They had located Denise.

She had not fled the state.

She had been hiding in a house registered under another name.

My father wanted to go immediately.

I went with him.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I wanted answers.

When Denise saw us enter, she looked different.

No perfect smile.

No gentle voice.

No performance.

Just anger.

“You.””

She looked at me.

For the first time, she didn’t pretend.

I stared back.

“You knew my mother.””

Her expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

My father stepped forward.

“How long?””

Denise laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That your precious little family was already broken before I arrived.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You used me.””

She smiled.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I saved you.””

The words were unbelievable.

“You saved me?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Your brother was going to destroy you.””

My father froze.

“And you?””

She smiled coldly.

“I gave you something to blame.””

The police officer interrupted.

“Denise Carter, you are under arrest.””

She looked at me one last time.

And whispered:

“Ask your father why your mother really died.””

My entire body went cold.

Because for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if Denise had been lying about everything.

Or if she had been telling the truth about one thing.
