Chapter 9: The Wedding That Richard Planned

I read Vanessa's message again.

Richard had introduced me to Ryan.

The memory came back so clearly that I felt as if I were standing in that restaurant all over again.

I had been twenty-nine, attending a charity dinner with my father. I remembered the polished silverware, the white roses on the tables, and the sound of jazz playing softly in the background.

Richard Hale had approached us with a young man beside him.

"Charles," he had said, smiling.

"I want you to meet someone. This is Ryan Mitchell. He's one of the most promising people I've worked with.""

Ryan had extended his hand.

"Mr. Whitmore. It's an honor.""

My father had introduced me.

Ryan smiled at me and said, "I've heard a lot about you.""

At the time, I thought it was charming.

Now I wondered how much he had already learned.

I showed the message to my father.

He read it without speaking.

Then he looked up.

"Richard introduced you to Ryan?""

"Yes. At the charity dinner.""

My father closed his eyes.

"I remember that evening.""

"You never told me Richard had been involved in our introduction.""

"I didn't think it mattered.""

I stared at him.

"How many things didn't matter, Dad?""

He accepted the question without defending himself.

"Too many.""

My uncle joined us in the hallway outside the conference room.

"What happened?""

I showed him the message.

He read it, then shook his head.

"Richard has always known how to position people where he wants them.""

My father turned toward him.

"You think he deliberately arranged their relationship?""

"I think we should investigate it rather than dismiss it.""

We returned to Lake Forest with Detective Morgan's instructions to preserve all communications and avoid confronting anyone involved in the investigation.

That evening, Vanessa agreed to meet me at a public location the following afternoon, with arrangements made through the authorities to ensure everyone's safety.

I didn't tell Ryan.

I didn't contact Richard.

And for the first time, I didn't allow my father to decide whether I was ready to hear the truth.

The following day, I met Vanessa at a quiet café near the lake.

She arrived wearing a dark coat and sunglasses. She looked exhausted, and when she saw me, she immediately checked the street behind me.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

I sat across from her.

"You owe me the truth.""

"I know.""

"Did Richard introduce me to Ryan because he wanted access to my father's money?""

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

"That was part of it.""

I waited.

She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"Richard believed your mother had hidden evidence that could destroy him. He also believed your father would eventually discover the fraud and report it.""

"So he wanted someone close to my family.""

"Yes.""

"And Ryan agreed to do it?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Ryan was deeply in debt. Richard offered him a way out. He told Ryan that if he gained your father's trust, he could help secure a business partnership that would make him wealthy.""

I felt sick.

"Was our entire relationship planned?""

"Not every moment. But the first meeting wasn't an accident. Richard chose the charity dinner because he knew you would attend.""

I stared at her.

"Did Ryan know about my mother before he met me?""

"Yes.""

"Did he know she had been investigating Richard?""

"Yes.""

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"Then why did he tell me he loved me?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because he wanted you to trust him. At first, everything was calculated. The gifts, the invitations, the way he asked about your family.""

She paused.

"But Ryan was also good at convincing himself that his own lies were true.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make any of this less cruel.""

"No," Vanessa whispered.

"It doesn't.""

She pushed the envelope toward me.

Inside was a photograph of Ryan and Richard sitting in a private office. A document lay open between them.

The date was three months before my first date with Ryan.

I examined the photograph.

On the desk was a folder bearing my full name.

Emily Elizabeth Whitmore.

My stomach twisted.

"What was in the folder?""

"Information about you. Your work, your finances, your relationship with your father, and your mother's death.""

I looked up.

"Why would Richard care about my mother's death?""

"Because he believed you might eventually inherit control of certain family assets. He was worried that if you ever discovered what your mother had found, you might support your father in reopening the investigation.""

"So he wanted Ryan to keep me away from the truth.""

"Yes.""

I leaned back.

The pieces were beginning to fit together, but the picture they formed was uglier than anything I had imagined.

"Why are you helping me now?""

Vanessa looked at her hands.

"Because I helped them. I introduced Ryan to people who could help his business. I moved money through accounts I didn't fully understand. I told myself I was only following instructions.""

She swallowed.

"Then I learned that Richard was using me as a shield. If the fraud was discovered, my name would be on the records. Ryan would claim he knew nothing, and Richard would deny everything.""

"Why didn't you leave?""

"I tried. Richard threatened my family. Ryan told me that if I exposed them, he would make sure I went to prison while he walked away.""

I watched her carefully.

"Do you have proof?""

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small encrypted storage device.

"Copies of financial records, emails, and the ledger Thomas gave me. I haven't altered anything. I kept the original files and created backups.""

I didn't reach for it.

"Have you given this to the police?""

"Not yet. I wanted to speak to you first.""

"Why?""

"Because the ledger contains information about your mother. I thought you deserved to know what it says.""

I took a slow breath.

"Then we give it to the police together. They can preserve it, verify it, and make sure the original records are protected.""

Vanessa looked relieved.

"Thank you.""

"Don't thank me. You still have to answer for what you did.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

For the next hour, Vanessa explained how Richard had arranged the initial meeting between Ryan and me. She described the business agreements Ryan signed and the pressure Richard placed on both of them to obtain information about my father's companies.

But one detail bothered me.

"If Richard wanted access to my father's money, why did Ryan become so controlling after we married?""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Because Ryan was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"At first, he was afraid you'd discover the plan. Later, he was afraid Richard would replace him if he failed to find the diary.""

I frowned.

"Replace him with whom?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"Your father.""

I stared at her.

"That makes no sense.""

"Richard believed your father would eventually become desperate enough to protect his reputation at any cost. He wanted evidence that could be used to control him.""

I thought of my father's shock when Thomas claimed he had seen him at the accident scene.

"Did Richard have evidence that my father was at the crash?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Not exactly. But he had been collecting information about Charles for years.""

"Why?""

"Because your father was the only person who could destroy him.""

I felt a cold knot form in my stomach.

"Then what happened the night my mother died?""

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"I don't know everything. But I know Richard told Ryan that the original ledger was hidden inside a blue box. He believed your mother had placed it somewhere your father could never find.""

"Why would he think that?""

"Because your mother had discovered that someone in your father's office was helping Richard. She no longer trusted anyone connected to the company.""

I thought of the letter.

Don't let Richard convince Charles that this was an accident.

My hands began to shake.

"Do you know who helped Richard?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

She leaned closer.

"Your father's former chief financial officer, Peter Lawson.""

The name meant nothing to me, but Vanessa continued.

"Peter controlled access to the financial records. He authorized transfers that Richard couldn't approve himself. And he was the person who provided Ryan with confidential information about your family.""

I took out my phone.

"Does my father know?""

"I don't think so.""

I immediately called him.

He answered on the second ring.

"Emily?""

"Have you ever heard of Peter Lawson?""

There was a pause.

"Of course. He worked for me for almost twenty years. He retired shortly after your mother's death.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

I asked, "Why did he retire?""

My father was silent for a moment.

"His wife was ill. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

"That wasn't the reason," she whispered.

I repeated the question to my father.

"Do you know why he really retired?""

"No. Why?""

"Because Vanessa says he was involved in the financial fraud.""

My father's voice changed.

"Where are you?""

"At a café. I'm with Vanessa.""

"Stay there. I'll arrange for the authorities to meet you.""

Before I could answer, Vanessa suddenly looked toward the window.

Her face went white.

"What is it?"" I asked.

She didn't respond.

I followed her gaze.

A black sedan had stopped across the street.

A man sat behind the steering wheel.

Even through the glass, I recognized the silver hair and the unmistakable posture.

Richard Hale.

Vanessa grabbed my wrist.

"Don't look at him.""

But it was too late.

Richard stepped out of the car and walked toward the café entrance.

He wasn't rushing.

He wasn't hiding.

He looked like a man who believed he had every right to be there.

My phone rang again.

My father.

I answered.

"Emily, listen carefully. Do not leave the café alone. The police are on their way.""

Richard opened the door.

The bell above it chimed.

He glanced around the room, spotted us, and smiled.

Then he walked directly to our table.

"Emily," he said pleasantly.

"You've grown into such a remarkable woman.""

I stared at him.

"You knew Ryan was using me.""

His smile faded slightly.

"That's a very serious accusation.""

"You arranged our meeting.""

"I introduced two people who seemed compatible.""

"You gave him information about my family.""

Richard pulled out a chair and sat down without asking permission.

"Your father has always had a tendency to turn business disagreements into personal vendettas.""

Vanessa stood.

"Don't do this, Richard.""

He looked at her with cold contempt.

"You should be careful about what you say, Vanessa. You've made enough mistakes already.""

She flinched, but she didn't sit down.

I looked directly at him.

"Did you have my mother killed?""

For the first time, the pleasant expression disappeared completely.

He leaned toward me.

"Your mother was a troubled woman who became obsessed with something she didn't understand.""

"That's not an answer.""

His eyes hardened.

"Then perhaps you should ask your father why he was at the scene of the accident.""

My heart pounded.

Before I could respond, two police officers entered the café.

Richard noticed them and stood.

"Well," he said, adjusting his coat, "it seems this conversation has come to an end.""

One officer approached him.

"Mr. Hale, we'd like to ask you some questions about a reopened investigation.""

Richard glanced at me.

"You should be careful, Emily. The truth can be a very expensive thing.""

Then he walked toward the officers.

As they escorted him outside, my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

It contained a photograph of my father standing beside my mother's damaged car on the night she died.

Underneath it were six words.

Your father remembers more than he admits.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

And before I could show Vanessa, another message arrived.

Ask him who was sitting in the passenger seat.
