Chapter 8: Rachel's Last Secret
“Richard…”
Rachel's voice came from the darkness behind us.
Hayes froze.
For the first time since I'd seen him, truly seen him, he looked like a man who had run out of answers.
Michael turned so quickly his shoulder struck the tunnel wall.
“Mom?””
A figure stepped into the faint emergency light.
She was older than the woman in my memories.
Her hair was streaked with silver.
There were lines around her eyes that hadn't been there twenty-four years ago.
But I would have recognized her in a crowd of ten thousand.
The way she stood.
The slight tilt of her head.
The tiny scar above her left eyebrow.
Rachel.
My wife.
Alive.
My knees nearly buckled.
“Rachel?””
She stopped.
Her eyes found mine.
Everything else disappeared.
The tunnel.
The men.
Hayes.
The past twenty-four years.
All of it.
She looked at me as though she had been waiting for that exact moment and dreading it at the same time.
“Jack.””
My throat closed.
Claire whispered, “Mom?””
Rachel looked at her.
Then she covered her mouth.
A sob escaped.
“Claire.””
My daughter took one step forward.
Then another.
Rachel opened her arms.
Claire ran into them.
They collided so hard Rachel stumbled backward against the wall.
“My baby.””
Claire buried her face in her mother's shoulder.
“You're alive.””
“I know.””
“They told me you were dead.””
“I know.””
“You left me.””
Rachel squeezed her tighter.
“I never left you.””
“You did.””
Her voice cracked.
“You weren't there.””
“I was watching.””
“That isn't the same.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“No.””
“It isn't.””
I stood several feet away.
Unable to move.
Unable to breathe.
Hayes recovered first.
“This reunion is touching.””
Rachel turned.
The warmth disappeared from her face.
“Richard.””
He smiled.
“You've been difficult to find.””
“You've known exactly where I was.””
“Not always.””
“You've been hunting my children for years.””
Hayes glanced at Michael.
“I've been protecting my investment.””
Rachel's eyes hardened.
“He is not an investment.””
Hayes sighed.
“You still don't understand.””
“No.””
She stepped toward him.
“I understand perfectly.””
Michael moved beside her.
“You made me believe she was dead.””
Hayes looked at him.
“I made you believe many things.””
Michael's jaw tightened.
“You stole my life.””
“I gave you one.””
“You gave me fear.””
“That kept you alive.””
I finally found my voice.
“You're going to stop.””
Hayes looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I stepped between him and my family.
“Very.””
He smiled.
“Still the colonel.””
“No.””
I looked him straight in the eyes.
“Just a father.””
For the first time, he looked almost amused.
“You think being a father makes you stronger?””
“It makes me harder to control.””
Rachel looked at me.
A flicker of recognition passed through her eyes.
“You still remember.””
“Remember what?””
“The promise.””
I frowned.
“What promise?””
Rachel's expression broke.
“The night before I disappeared.””
I searched my memory.
She had held my face between both hands.
She had been crying.
She had made me promise something.
But time had blurred the details.
“What did I promise?””
Rachel whispered:
“That if anything happened to me, you'd protect Claire.””
“I did.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You protected her from the wrong people.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked at Hayes.
Then at the men behind him.
“Because the people closest to us were the ones they needed.””
I thought of old officers.
Old friends.
People who had known my family.
People who had attended Rachel's funeral.
People who had comforted me afterward.
Rachel stepped closer.
“I found out the truth three days before my supposed death.””
“About Hayes?””
“About the entire network.””
She glanced at Michael.
“Richard wasn't the beginning.””
Hayes's smile vanished.
I noticed.
Rachel did too.
“You don't know everything, do you, Richard?””
He stared at her.
She smiled faintly.
“For twenty-four years, you've believed you controlled the ledger.””
Hayes said nothing.
“You don't.””
My pulse quickened.
“What ledger?””
Rachel looked at me.
“The one Claire has.””
Claire still clutched the flash drive.
Rachel nodded toward it.
“That contains the original records.””
Hayes took one step forward.
“Give it to me.””
Claire backed away.
“No.””
Hayes looked at me.
“Jack.””
I moved closer to Claire.
“You're not touching her.””
Hayes sighed.
“Then you leave me no choice.””
He raised a hand.
The armed men behind him lifted their weapons.
Rachel shouted:
“Now!””
The tunnel lights went out.
A shot cracked.
Another.
Then chaos.
I grabbed Claire and dropped.
Michael tackled one of the men.
Emily shoved herself against the wall.
Rachel disappeared into the darkness.
I heard shouting.
Metal struck concrete.
Someone screamed.
Then a red emergency light blinked on.
One gunman lay unconscious.
Another was gone.
Hayes had disappeared too.
Michael was holding a man's wrist against the floor.
“Go!””
Rachel grabbed Claire's hand.
“This way.””
We followed her down a narrow passage.
“Where are we going?””
“Outside.””
“Then why isn't Hayes following?””
“He is.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he knows every exit.””
We turned a corner.
A steel ladder led upward.
Rachel climbed first.
Claire followed.
I stayed behind them.
Emily came last.
We emerged into an abandoned warehouse.
Rain hammered the corrugated roof.
The river was visible through broken windows.
Rachel shut the hatch.
“Lock it.””
Michael dropped the metal bar into place.
We stood there in silence.
Rachel turned toward me.
For the first time, there were no gunshots.
No shouting.
No one chasing us.
Just us.
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because if I came home, they would kill you.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because they were inside the military.””
I stopped.
Rachel nodded.
“Richard wasn't working alone.””
“Who?””
“He had officers.””
“Names.””
“I couldn't risk writing them down.””
“You could have called me.””
“I did.””
“When?””
“Three times.””
I remembered.
Unknown numbers.
Three calls that came after midnight during the first year after her death.
I had assumed they were mistakes.
“Why didn't you speak?””
“Because the first call was monitored.””
My skin prickled.
“The second?””
“Also monitored.””
“And the third?””
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“I heard your voice.””
I couldn't breathe.
“You called me?””
“Yes.””
“What did I say?””
She smiled sadly.
“You answered, ‘Hello?’”
I remembered.
A silent call.
I had answered.
Then someone had hung up.
I had thought nothing of it.
Rachel whispered, “I heard Claire crying in the background.””
Claire looked at her.
“You were there?””
Rachel nodded.
“I was in a car across the street.””
Claire started crying again.
“Why didn't you come inside?””
“Because two men were watching your house.””
She looked at me.
“And one of them was an officer you trusted.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not yet.””
“Rachel.””
“Not yet.””
I stepped closer.
“We've been lied to for twenty-four years.””
“I know.””
“You owe me the truth.””
She nodded.
“I do.””
She looked at Michael.
“Both of you deserve it.””
Michael crossed his arms.
“Then tell us.””
Rachel took a breath.
“When I escaped the Vale estate, I believed I'd destroyed the ledger.””
“But you hadn't.””
“No.””
She looked at Claire's flash drive.
“The original ledger was split into three pieces.””
“Why?””
“To prevent anyone from controlling the entire record.””
“Who has the pieces?””
Rachel looked at Michael.
“One is with him.””
Michael frowned.
“I've never seen it.””
“You have.””
She pointed toward his neck.
He touched the dog tag.
Rachel nodded.
“Inside.””
Michael pulled the chain free.
“There's nothing here.””
“Turn it over.””
He did.
There was a tiny seam in the metal.
Michael looked at me.
“That's impossible.””
“Open it.””
He pressed the edge with his thumbnail.
The dog tag snapped apart.
Inside was a microchip.
Claire stared.
“What is that?””
Rachel answered:
“The first third of the ledger.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“And the second?””
“Claire has it.””
Claire stared at the drive.
“And the third?””
Rachel went silent.
I already knew the answer.
“Hayes.””
She nodded.
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“He had it?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Not anymore.””
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.
She handed it to me.
“Open it.””
Inside was a photograph.
Hayes stood beside a younger man.
A much younger man.
Maybe eighteen.
I recognized him immediately.
Ethan.
But that wasn't what shocked me.
Behind them stood another person.
A girl.
Claire.
Only she was perhaps five years old.
I looked at Rachel.
“What is this?””
Her voice trembled.
“That's the reason Ethan married Claire.””
I stared at the photograph.
“What?””
Rachel looked at my daughter.
“Ethan didn't choose Claire.””
“He was assigned to her.””
Claire stepped backward.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“His family had been preparing for your marriage since you were a child.””
I felt something inside me crack.
“Why?””
Rachel looked toward the rain-streaked windows.
“Because Claire was the only person who could unlock the final ledger.””
Claire's face went white.
“I don't understand.””
Rachel reached for her.
“You were born with something your father never knew existed.””
“What?””
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“A key.””
“Inside what?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Your blood.””
I felt the room go silent.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, every light in the warehouse flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the old radio on a workbench crackled to life.
A man's voice came through.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
Richard Hayes.
“You should have stayed dead, Rachel.””
Rachel went rigid.
The radio hissed.
“Because now I have no reason to keep Jack alive.””
A red light appeared on the far wall.
Then another.
Laser sights.
Dozens of them.
Rachel grabbed Claire.
“Down!””
Gunfire erupted through the warehouse windows.
Glass exploded.
I threw myself over Claire as bullets tore into the walls.
Michael dragged Emily behind a steel machine.
Rachel crawled toward me.
“Jack!””
I looked at her.
She was crying.
Not from fear.
From realization.
“He found us.””
I tightened my grip on Claire.
“Then we're done running.””
Rachel stared at me.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“This time, Jack…”
May you like
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“We fight.””
