Chapter 8: The Truth Behind My Father’s Last Betrayal
The name on the screen stayed there.
*WILLIAM CARTER.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was impossible.
Not because William was innocent.
Not anymore.
But because my mind refused to accept it.
William wasn’t a stranger.
He wasn’t some distant employee.
He was the man who sat beside my father during every major moment of his life.
The man who helped him build his company.
The man who wrote the documents that protected our family.
The man who stood beside me at the funeral and told me, “Your father was proud of you.””
Now his name was glowing on my father’s computer as the person who started everything.
I looked at William.
He didn’t look surprised.
That was the worst part.
He looked defeated.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
“Explain,” I said.
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
William looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
His face tightened.
“Like what?””
“Like you’re still the person who has always protected me.””
The words hurt him.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, I need an explanation.””
William didn’t answer.
Marcus laughed quietly.
A sound full of bitterness.
“Finally.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Finally, Dad’s perfect little story starts falling apart.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew.””
Marcus smiled.
“I knew enough.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means I wasn’t the only one looking for the money.””
William’s eyes narrowed.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I’m done protecting people who never protected me.””
Thomas immediately raised his hand.
“Stay where you are.””
Marcus ignored him.
He looked at me.
“You want the truth, Daniel?””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
“Your father was never just investigating me.””
The room went silent.
“He was investigating everyone.””
My eyes moved toward William.
Marcus continued.
“He knew someone was moving money. He knew someone was using his company. But he didn’t know who at first.””
William looked away.
“Then he found out.””
“How?””
Marcus smiled.
“Because your father was smarter than all of us.””
The words sounded almost like respect.
Almost.
“He planted a trap.””
I frowned.
“A trap?””
Marcus nodded.
“Different information. Different people.””
My heart sank.
“That’s why Dad created all these files.””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at William.
“He wanted to know who would leak what.””
Thomas looked at the documents.
“So Robert was testing everyone.””
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed.
“And guess who failed first?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
William.
I looked at the attorney.
“Is that true?””
William remained silent.
That silence was confirmation.
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Finally, William spoke.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Because I made a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t accidentally destroy someone’s trust.””
William closed his eyes.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised me.
He wasn’t defending himself.
He wasn’t blaming circumstances.
He was accepting it.
That made it worse.
“Tell me what happened.””
William sat down slowly.
The same chair where he had reviewed legal documents with my father.
The same room where he had hidden the truth.
“Three years ago, my wife became sick.””
The room quieted.
“I needed money.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
“And I borrowed from the company.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Without authorization?””
William nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at me.
“There it is.””
William continued.
“I intended to pay it back.””
“Did you?””
He looked down.
“No.””
The silence was painful.
“How much?””
William swallowed.
“Enough that Adrian noticed.””
The company executive.
The name from earlier.
“So Adrian knew?””
“Yes.””
“And Marcus?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“They used you.””
William nodded.
“I know.””
Marcus smiled.
“He thought he was controlling the situation.””
William looked at him.
“And you thought you were.””
The two men stared at each other.
For the first time, I understood something.
They hated each other.
But they were connected.
Different pieces of the same disaster.
“Why did Dad think you started it?”” I asked.
William looked at the computer.
“Because I did.””
The words shocked me.
Even Marcus looked surprised.
“What?””
William continued.
“I didn’t create the theft.””
He looked at me.
“But I created the opportunity.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“I changed a document.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“What document?””
“A financial report.””
William’s voice cracked.
“I changed numbers so Marcus could access information he shouldn’t have had.””
“Why?””
“Because he threatened me.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“That’s a lie.””
William looked at him.
“You threatened my family.””
“You’re the one who helped me.””
“I made one mistake.””
Marcus laughed.
“One?””
William looked down.
“I thought I could control it.””
There it was.
The same mistake everyone made.
They thought Marcus could be controlled.
They thought they were using him.
But Marcus had spent his entire life learning how to use people.
I looked at Marcus.
“And you?””
He didn’t answer.
“Did you threaten him?””
Marcus shrugged.
“I needed what I needed.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Your father recorded conversations.””
Marcus froze.
A small movement.
But enough.
I noticed.
Thomas noticed.
“You know about the recordings.””
Marcus looked away.
William looked at him.
“You told him?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
That was when I understood.
Marcus didn’t just know about the safe.
He knew about Dad’s investigation.
He knew because someone had given him information.
Someone who had access.
William.
But maybe not only William.
I looked at Rachel.
She was crying quietly.
“You knew about this too?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why were you helping him?””
Her voice broke.
“Because I thought he was right.””
I stared.
“About what?””
“That your father was hiding money from everyone.””
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had wanted the same fantasy.
A hidden fortune.
A secret escape.
Nobody wanted the truth.
The truth was harder.
The truth required accountability.
Thomas walked to the computer.
“We need to open the rest of the files.””
William looked up.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
“No?””
William stood.
“You can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know what’s there.””
Thomas stared at him.
“That’s the point.””
William looked at me.
“Daniel.””
Something about his voice bothered me.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Warning.
“There’s something your father never told you.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
William looked at the computer.
“The money wasn’t the only thing he hid.””
Nobody spoke.
“What else?””
William swallowed.
“Your father discovered who was behind everything.””
Marcus’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked genuinely nervous.
I noticed.
“Marcus knows.””
William nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
William looked at the screen.
The cursor blinked.
A new file appeared.
*FINAL CONFESSION — ROBERT HAYES*
My father’s voice recording.
The last one.
William whispered:
“He wanted you to hear this only after everyone responsible was in the same room.””
I stared.
“Why?””
William looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Because he knew the truth would destroy your family.””
Thomas pressed play.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then my father’s voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But clear.
“Daniel.””
My eyes filled.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
A pause.
“There is something I never told you about Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“Your brother was not the person who betrayed me first.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus looked at the speakers.
Confusion crossed his face.
Then fear.
Dad continued:
“The first person who betrayed me…”
A pause.
Someone in the room whispered.
“No.””
My father’s voice finished the sentence.
“Was someone I considered my own son.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked back at me.
And for the first time…
Neither of us knew what to say.
Because my father’s final confession wasn’t about William.
It wasn’t about Rachel.
It wasn’t about money.
It was about Marcus.
May you like
And whatever he had done…
Was something even he was afraid to hear.
