Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Wheel

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

The lobby lights hummed above us.

Rain tapped against the glass doors.

Somewhere in the distance, a wedding guest laughed as they walked through the hotel entrance, completely unaware that my entire life had just cracked open.

I looked at David.

He didn't move.

He didn't deny it.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was the way his face changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“David?””

His eyes met mine.

“Sarah…”

My voice came out smaller than I expected.

“Tell me she's lying.””

Clara immediately shook her head.

“I’m not.””

“Tell me.””

David opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any confession could have.

I stepped back.

“No.””

He moved toward me.

“Sarah, wait.””

“No.””

“It wasn't what you think.””

I stared at him.

“My husband was driving a car that hit someone, and I’m supposed to believe there’s another explanation?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

He looked around.

At Ethan.

At my father.

At Clara.

Then back at me.

“I didn't kill anyone.””

The word hit me like a slap.

“I didn't say you did.””

“But that's what everyone thinks.””

Ethan remained silent.

David ran a hand through his hair.

“It happened three months ago.””

I looked at Clara.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“I was there.””

“And Dad?””

“He found out after.””

I turned toward my father.

“You knew my husband was involved?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

My chest felt like it was being crushed.

“And you still let me marry him?””

Dad looked down.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.””

The lobby fell silent.

Lily was sitting with my mother several feet away.

I could see her watching us.

Confused.

Scared.

I lowered my voice.

“Not in front of her.””

Everyone followed my gaze.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Only guilt remained.

David looked toward Lily.

“I never wanted her involved.””

I laughed quietly.

“You didn't want her involved?””

I wiped my face.

“You hid a dead woman from me.””

His expression broke.

“She wasn't dead when I left.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

David swallowed.

“I didn't leave her.””

Ethan watched him carefully.

“Then explain why the emergency report lists you as absent.””

David looked at the floor.

Because he knew.

Because whatever happened, there was something he still wasn't saying.

“I called someone.””

“Who?”” I asked.

No answer.

“David.””

“My father.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked at my father.

“I called him.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“And you told me to go home.””

I stared at Dad.

“You told him to leave?””

Dad didn't respond.

“Dad?””

His silence confirmed it.

My hands started shaking.

“You told him to leave the scene?””

“No.””

David spoke.

“You told me not to make things worse.””

Dad looked at him.

“You were in shock.””

“I was scared.””

“You weren't thinking clearly.””

“So you told me to disappear.””

“I told you to wait.””

“For what?””

Dad looked away.

David's voice became bitter.

“For you to figure out how to protect the family.””

My father didn't deny it.

That hurt.

Because denial would have been easier.

Ethan opened his folder.

“After Mr. Bennett contacted his father, several things happened.””

Dad glared.

“This isn't helping.””

“It needs to be said.””

“What things?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“The vehicle was moved.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“The car was moved from the original location.””

David immediately said, “I didn't move it.””

“Who did?””

No one answered.

I looked at Clara.

She was crying silently.

“Clara?””

She covered her mouth.

“Your father called me.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He told me to bring the car back.””

My heart sank.

“You moved the car?””

“I was scared.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around.

Everyone was scared.

Everyone except me.

I was the only person who had been living inside a lie.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Nobody spoke.

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“I was her sister.””

Clara whispered, “Because we thought we could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix it?””

She nodded.

“We thought the woman would recover.””

Ethan's expression changed.

“She didn't.””

Clara closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“And when she died, the situation changed.””

David looked at Ethan.

“You don't know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

David looked at me.

That was when I saw it.

The guilt.

Not the guilt of someone hiding a crime.

The guilt of someone who had been carrying something too heavy alone.

“I was driving because Clara called me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“She was crying.””

Clara looked down.

“She had a fight with David.””

“About what?””

Clara whispered, “The wedding.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

David continued.

“She said she couldn't handle everything. She asked me to pick her up.””

“Why were you in her car?””

“Because she was too upset to drive.””

I looked at Clara.

“And then?””

David took a deep breath.

“We were on our way back when the woman stepped into the road.””

Ethan interrupted.

“The traffic camera shows a different sequence.””

David looked at him.

“I know.””

“You know?””

David nodded.

“Because I saw the footage.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who showed it to you?””

He didn't answer.

“David.””

“Your father.””

I turned.

Again.

My father.

Always my father.

“Why?””

Dad finally spoke.

“Because I was trying to understand what happened.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control what happened.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn't care.

Not anymore.

Ethan placed another document on the table.

“This is the reason the custody case exists.””

I picked it up.

It was a statement.

From the victim's family.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then I stopped.

A name.

A name I recognized.

My breathing stopped.

“That's impossible.””

David looked at me.

“What?””

I pointed.

“The victim.””

Ethan nodded.

“You know her?””

I stared at the paper.

The woman's name.

The woman who died.

The woman everyone had been hiding.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“No, I don't know her.””

But I did.

Because I had seen that name before.

On my phone.

In old messages.

In the contact list of a person I never thought I would have to question.

“Sarah?”” David asked.

I looked at him.

My lips barely moved.

“She called me.””

Everyone froze.

“What?”” Clara whispered.

I looked at the document again.

“The woman who died…”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“She called me three weeks before the accident.””

Dad's face changed.

“What did she say?””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His expression told me everything.

He knew.

“You knew she contacted me.””

Nobody spoke.

I remembered the strange phone call.

The woman crying.

The voice asking if I knew what my husband had done.

The voice I had dismissed because I thought it was some kind of scam.

I remembered the words.

*Your husband doesn't love you. He's hiding something.*

I looked at David.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

“Sarah—”

“Did she tell me the truth?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

The man I had loved for eight years suddenly felt like a stranger.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Bennett…”

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He ended the call.

“The court clerk just confirmed something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The custody hearing has been moved.””

My heart raced.

“When?””

Ethan looked at the clock.

“Tomorrow morning.””

“That was already happening.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It was moved earlier.””

“How early?””

He looked at the time.

“Six hours.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan's voice dropped.

“It means someone wants the judge to see the evidence before you have time to respond.””

My father went pale.

“Who requested the change?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then at David.

Then at Clara.

“The person who filed the emergency motion.””

“Who?””

He slowly opened his phone.

A message appeared on the screen.

One name.

And the name made Clara gasp.

Because it wasn't the victim's family.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't even the court.

It was someone inside our own family.

May you like

*Margaret Bennett.*

My mother.
