Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Water
I carried Emily out of that backyard without looking back.
Every instinct in my body wanted to turn around and tear that house apart.
I wanted to kick down the front door.
I wanted to find Sarah.
I wanted to grab Jason by the collar and demand to know why my daughter had been locked inside a metal cage for three days.
But Emily’s arms were still wrapped around my neck.
Her breathing was uneven.
Her body was trembling.
And in that moment, I understood something that mattered more than my anger.
She needed her father.
Not a detective.
Not a man looking for revenge.
Not someone chasing answers.
Just her dad.
I placed her carefully in the passenger seat of my car and buckled her in.
“Are you hurt anywhere?”” I asked.
She stared down at her hands.
“I don’t know.””
The answer scared me more than if she had said yes.
I touched her cheek gently.
“Emily, look at me.””
Slowly, she raised her eyes.
“I’m taking you somewhere safe. Do you understand?””
She nodded.
“Okay.””
I closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side.
Before I started the engine, I looked back at Sarah’s house.
The windows were still covered.
The chain was still across the entrance.
The backyard fence stood between me and the truth.
But I knew one thing.
I wasn’t done with that place.
Not even close.
As I drove away, my phone started ringing.
The screen showed Sarah’s name.
For three days, I had begged for that call.
Three days of silence.
Three days of wondering if my daughter was okay.
Now, seeing her name appear, I felt relief for half a second.
Then I remembered Emily’s words.
“Mom knows.””
I let the phone ring.
Emily noticed.
“Are you not going to answer?””
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
“No.””
She looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because right now, I need to make sure you’re okay first.””
She looked out the window.
After a few seconds, she whispered, “Mom is going to be mad.””
My heart sank.
“Why would your mom be mad that I found you?””
Emily didn’t answer.
“Emily.””
She kept staring outside.
“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me what happened.””
Her fingers twisted together in her lap.
“I can’t.””
“You can.””
“No, Dad.””
Her voice cracked.
“She said something bad would happen if I told.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“Who said that?””
Emily didn’t speak.
I pulled into an empty parking lot near a small park and stopped the car.
I turned toward her.
“Emily, listen to me. Nobody gets to scare you into keeping secrets from me. Nobody.””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“She said you wouldn’t believe me.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“Who said that?””
This time, she answered.
“Mom.””
For a moment, I couldn’t respond.
I had spent years trying to be fair to Sarah.
Even after our divorce.
Even after the arguments.
Even after she started dating Jason.
I always told Emily that her mother loved her.
Because I believed that.
But now my daughter was sitting in front of me, afraid to speak because her own mother told her she wouldn’t be believed.
I took a slow breath.
“What did your mom tell you?””
Emily looked down.
“She said I was confused.””
“About what?””
“About Jason.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did Jason do?””
Emily wiped her eyes.
“He found my phone.””
“When?””
“Thursday night.””
The day before she disappeared.
“He took it from my room.””
“Why?””
“Because I recorded him.””
I froze.
“You recorded him?””
She nodded.
“I didn’t mean to. It just happened.””
“Recorded what?””
Emily looked toward the window.
Her voice became quieter.
“I heard Jason and Mom talking.””
“About what?””
She swallowed.
“About the pool.””
My stomach turned.
“Tell me exactly what you heard.””
She closed her eyes.
“I was outside my room. They didn’t know I was there.””
Her hands shook as she continued.
“Jason said the problem was still in the pool.””
A silence filled the car.
“And your mom?””
“She said she was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Emily looked at me.
“Getting caught.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Caught doing what?””
Emily didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she reached into the pocket of her dirty jacket.
My breath stopped.
She pulled out something small.
A phone.
Not hers.
An old black phone with a cracked screen.
“I hid this.””
I stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Jason dropped it.””
“When?””
“The night he locked me up.””
The words made my entire body go cold.
“He locked you up?””
Emily nodded.
“He told me it was only for a little while.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What happened?””
She looked terrified.
“I saw him moving the bags.””
“Into the pool?””
“Yes.””
“Then what?””
“I asked him why.””
Her voice became smaller.
“And he got angry.””
“What did he say?””
She looked at the floor.
“He said I was just like you.””
I frowned.
“Like me?””
“He said you always thought you could fix everything.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
“What happened next?””
“Mom came outside.””
“And?””
“She told Jason to calm down.””
I waited.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then she looked at me and said, ‘Maybe you need some time alone.’”
My chest tightened.
“She put you in that cage?””
Emily nodded.
“I thought she was going to let me out the next morning.””
Her voice broke.
“But she didn’t.””
I reached over and held her hand.
“How did you survive?””
She shrugged weakly.
“There was a water bottle.””
“Only one?””
“And some crackers.””
“For three days?””
She nodded.
I closed my eyes.
Three days.
My daughter had been trapped in a backyard enclosure while the people who were supposed to protect her stayed inside that house.
I felt anger rising.
But I pushed it down.
Not yet.
Emily needed calm.
She needed safety.
I looked at the old phone in her hand.
“Can we turn that on?””
She hesitated.
“I don’t know the password.””
“Was it Jason’s?””
“Yes.””
I pressed the power button.
The screen flickered.
Then turned black.
A second later, a notification appeared.
One unread message.
From a contact saved as:
*S.*
My breathing stopped.
Emily leaned closer.
“Who is S?””
I already knew.
But I wanted to be wrong.
I clicked the message.
The text appeared.
*Did you take care of the girl? We can’t have her telling him what she saw.*
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Emily covered her mouth.
“That’s Mom.””
I stared at the screen.
The words blurred.
A thousand possibilities raced through my mind.
Maybe there was another explanation.
Maybe Sarah was talking about something else.
Maybe—
Then another message arrived.
Right in front of us.
Same sender.
Same contact.
*Jason, answer me. The bags cannot stay there. If he finds out what’s inside, we’re both finished.*
Emily started crying.
I immediately pulled her into my arms.
But my eyes stayed on that message.
The bags.
What was inside those bags?
And why was Sarah afraid of me finding out?
I called emergency services.
My voice sounded strange as I explained everything.
A child found.
A locked enclosure.
Evidence.
A possible crime.
While we waited, Emily sat beside me, wrapped in my jacket.
She looked exhausted.
But she looked safer.
For the first time in three days, she closed her eyes.
I watched her sleep.
And I made myself a promise.
Whoever did this would answer for it.
No matter who they were.
Even if it was her mother.
Twenty minutes later, flashing lights filled the parking lot.
An officer approached my car.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need to ask your daughter some questions.””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
The officer looked at Emily.
Then at the old phone in my hand.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“My daughter found it.””
He stared at the screen.
Then his face became serious.
“Sir…”
“What?””
He looked at the message.
Then back at me.
“Before we go back to that house, you need to know something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“We ran the address while you were calling.””
“And?””
The officer hesitated.
“Sarah Carter’s house was already under investigation.””
I felt the world go silent.
“Investigation for what?””
He looked toward the road.
May you like
Then said the one sentence I would never forget.
“For a missing person.””
