Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Buried
I stared at the woman in the corner.
My first instinct was to laugh.
Not because it was funny.
Because the sentence was too impossible to understand.
“I’m your real mother.””
The words echoed inside my head.
Again.
And again.
My mother sat frozen in the wheelchair behind me.
Thomas stood near the doorway.
Marissa had gone completely still.
Nobody looked surprised except me.
I turned slowly toward Eleanor.
“My real mother?””
She couldn't meet my eyes.
“Daniel…”
“Is she telling the truth?””
My mother began to cry.
“Answer me.””
She covered her mouth.
The woman took another step toward me.
“My name is Vivian.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Vivian.
My father's business partner.
My mother's sister.
The woman supposedly murdered twenty years ago.
And apparently my biological mother.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not possible.””
Vivian nodded sadly.
“I know.””
“You're my aunt.””
Her lips trembled.
“That’s what everyone was told.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
And that one movement told me she couldn't deny it.
I stepped backward.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“Since the day you were born.””
The words made my knees weak.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Then why?””
Eleanor looked at Vivian.
Then at me.
“Because you were never supposed to know.””
“Why?””
“Because your father was afraid they would come for you.””
“Who?””
Vivian answered.
“The people behind everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Vivian looked at Thomas.
He nodded once.
She continued.
“Your father and I discovered where the money was going.””
“Thomas.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“You stole from my father?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why did everyone think you did?””
“Because someone needed a villain.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
“The same people who made your father disappear.””
“Stop saying disappear.””
My voice cracked.
“Was he murdered or not?””
Vivian's face broke.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“My father was murdered.””
She nodded.
“Your father was killed because he found the ledger.””
“The red folder.””
“The red folder was only part of it.””
“What was in the ledger?””
“Names.””
“Whose names?””
“People who had been laundering money through construction projects.””
I stared at her.
“And Dad was going to expose them.””
“Yes.””
“Then why was he hiding?””
“Because they had already killed two witnesses.””
My stomach turned.
“Vivian, why did you disappear?””
She looked down.
“Because I was supposed to die too.””
“What happened?””
She took a slow breath.
“Your father told me to leave Mercy Hill before midnight. He believed someone inside the police department had warned the men coming after us.””
“Samuel Brooks?””
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Then who?””
Vivian looked at Eleanor.
My mother finally spoke.
“Officer Marcus Reed.””
I searched my memory.
The name meant nothing.
“He was one of the officers assigned to your father's case,” Eleanor said.
“Was he involved?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't anyone arrest him?””
“Because he disappeared.””
“Like you?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Like me.””
I stared between them.
This was no longer one secret.
It was an entire life built on lies.
I looked at Vivian.
“How did you survive?””
“My father helped me.””
I frowned.
“Your father?””
She nodded toward Thomas.
“My father?”” I looked at Marissa.
She stepped closer.
“I told you my father knew yours.””
“But he was supposed to be working against him.””
“He wasn't.””
Thomas spoke.
“I was trying to help your father.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did he let everyone believe he was dead?””
“Because I needed them to believe it.””
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To protect Marissa.””
My eyes moved to my wife.
She looked exhausted.
“My father knew they would come after me if they discovered he was alive,” Marissa whispered.
“So he disappeared.””
I shook my head.
“You spent all these years believing your father was innocent.””
“I knew he was.””
“And you married me to prove it.””
“Yes.””
“And then you moved into my mother's house.””
“I thought the folder was there.””
“You searched my mother's room.””
“Yes.””
“You found Vivian.””
Marissa nodded.
“Three months ago.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Vivian told me not to.””
I looked at Vivian.
“Why?””
“Because you were being watched.””
“By who?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Your wife.””
I stared at her.
Marissa flinched.
“She didn't know she was being watched,” Vivian continued.
“What does that mean?””
“Someone was using Marissa to get close to you.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Vivian looked toward the hospital door.
“Your marriage wasn't the target.””
“What was?””
“You.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“Why me?””
“Because your father left the final evidence with you.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I was nine.””
“And that's why he chose you.””
I stared at her.
“What did he leave me?””
Vivian pointed toward the photograph on the desk.
“Look behind it.””
I stepped closer.
The old photograph was mounted in a wooden frame.
I lifted it.
Behind it was a small envelope taped to the back.
My name was written across the front.
In my father's handwriting.
My hands began shaking.
I opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.*
My vision blurred.
I kept reading.
*There are things your mother will tell you and things Vivian will tell you. Listen to both, but believe neither completely until you find the tape.*
A tape?
I looked up.
“What tape?””
Nobody answered.
I read on.
*The person who betrayed me was not Thomas.*
My eyes moved to him.
Thomas looked down.
*It was Eleanor.*
I stopped.
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
She had gone pale.
“No.””
I read the next line.
*She did not betray me because she hated me. She betrayed me because she believed she was saving our son.*
My mother began sobbing.
“Daniel, please.””
I couldn't move.
The letter continued.
*When they came for Vivian, Eleanor gave them information about where she was hiding. She thought they would take Vivian and leave you alone. She was wrong.*
My mother covered her face.
“She threatened to kill you,” Eleanor whispered.
“I thought if I gave them Vivian, they would leave you alone.””
I looked at her.
“You betrayed your own sister.””
“I know.””
“Dad found out?””
“He found out.””
“What did he do?””
“He wanted to go to the police.””
Thomas spoke.
“But the police were already compromised.””
My eyes returned to the letter.
*If Eleanor tells you she acted alone, she is lying. Someone forced her hand.*
I froze.
“What?””
Thomas moved closer.
The final paragraph was short.
*The person who forced Eleanor to betray Vivian was the one person none of us suspected.*
I looked at the bottom.
There was no name.
Only three words.
*Ask Marissa why.*
I slowly lowered the page.
“Marissa.””
She stepped back.
“I didn't know.””
“What don't you know?””
“I don't know what your father meant.””
“He told me to ask you.””
“I was a child when this happened.””
“But your family knew.””
“My father knew pieces.””
“Then why did he die?””
“He didn't.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He disappeared.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father survived the attack.””
I looked at Vivian.
“Then where is he?””
Nobody answered.
My heart started pounding.
“Where is my father?””
Vivian's eyes filled with tears.
“He's closer than you think.””
A sound came from behind us.
The door slammed.
We all turned.
Nobody was there.
Then I heard the unmistakable sound of footsteps.
Coming from the hidden corridor.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
Leonard drew his flashlight.
“Everybody stay back.””
The footsteps stopped.
A voice came from the darkness.
An old man's voice.
Weak.
But familiar.
“Daniel.””
My entire body locked.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it in old home videos.
Dreams.
Memories.
My childhood.
I whispered the only word I could manage.
“Dad?””
A man stepped into the light.
Older.
Thinner.
His hair almost completely gray.
But the eyes were the same.
My father's eyes.
He looked at me.
And tears filled his face.
“I'm sorry, son.””
Eleanor let out a broken cry.
Thomas lowered his head.
Vivian covered her mouth.
And Marissa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
My father took one step forward.
Then another.
“I never wanted you to know like this.””
I couldn't breathe.
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
“Why did you leave me?””
His face crumpled.
“Because leaving you was the only reason you survived.””
I shook my head.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I had no choice.””
“You had twenty-six years.””
“I know.””
“Why come back now?””
He looked directly at Marissa.
Then at Vivian.
Then at Eleanor.
Finally, his eyes returned to me.
“Because the people who tried to kill us have found the last piece of evidence.””
“What evidence?””
My father reached into his coat.
He pulled out a thin black cassette tape.
My heart stopped.
“The recording.””
“The recording of what?””
He looked toward the door.
“The night I was supposed to die.””
May you like
Then he whispered:
“And on that tape is the voice of the person who ordered my murder.””
