Chapter 6: The Nurse Who Knew Everything

The person standing in the doorway was the last person I expected to see.

Nurse Melissa.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept it.

Melissa.

The woman who had brought me extra blankets during my labor.

The woman who stayed with me when I cried from exhaustion.

The woman who smiled when she placed Grace in my arms for the first time.

The woman who told me, “You’re going to be a wonderful mother.””

Now she stood in my hospital room with a serious expression.

And suddenly every kind thing she had done felt different.

Not fake.

Not necessarily.

But complicated.

My fingers tightened around Grace’s blanket.

“Melissa?””

She looked at me.

Then at Claire.

Then at the papers on the bed.

Her expression changed.

“You already know.””

The words made my heart sink.

Claire stood up.

“Know what?””

Melissa closed the door behind her.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she didn’t want anyone outside to hear.

“I know this is going to be hard to believe.””

I stared at her.

“Try me.””

She looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

Those words.

Everyone kept saying those words.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

An accident.

But mistakes did not create legal documents before a baby was born.

Mistakes did not involve secret conversations.

Mistakes did not leave mothers terrified in hospital rooms.

“What did you do?”” I asked.

Melissa looked at Grace.

Then back at me.

“I gave Daniel information.””

My chest tightened.

“What information?””

She swallowed.

“About your hospital schedule.””

The room became silent.

Claire looked shocked.

“You?””

Melissa nodded.

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I had heard that sentence too many times.

“I didn’t know.””

Claire shook her head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Melissa looked ashamed.

“I thought I was helping.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

She sat down slowly.

“Daniel came to me months ago.””

“Before Grace was born?””

“Yes.””

My stomach twisted.

“What did he ask?””

Melissa looked uncomfortable.

“He asked about postpartum procedures.””

“That’s normal.””

“Yes.””

She paused.

“But then he started asking questions that weren’t medical.””

“What kind of questions?””

She looked at me.

“Whether new mothers are usually overwhelmed after delivery.””

My blood went cold.

“He asked how often mothers cry after giving birth.””

Claire whispered,

“Oh my God.””

Melissa nodded.

“He asked if exhaustion can affect judgment.””

I looked away.

The pieces were connecting.

Daniel wasn’t just planning documents.

He was collecting a story.

A story where my emotions became evidence.

“He was building a case,” I whispered.

Melissa didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

My eyes burned.

“And you helped him.””

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

Her face fell.

“Because it’s true.””

“Is it?””

The question came out sharper than I intended.

But I needed to ask.

“Or is that what everyone says when they realize they helped hurt someone?””

Melissa looked down.

“I deserve that.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Claire asked,

“Why are you telling Ava now?””

Melissa looked nervous.

“Because I found out what Daniel was really doing.””

“What changed?””

She reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My heart immediately sank.

Another document.

Another secret.

She placed it on the table.

“I found this in Daniel’s file folder.””

I looked at it.

“Why did he have a file here?””

Melissa shook her head.

“He didn’t. His mother did.””

Evelyn.

Of course.

Everything led back to her.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a printed email.

My eyes moved across the page.

And I felt the air leave my lungs.

*From: Evelyn Bennett*

*To: Daniel Bennett*

*Subject: After Delivery*

*The hospital staff member has confirmed Ava’s condition after birth should support our argument.*

I stopped reading.

The room blurred.

“Hospital staff member.””

Melissa closed her eyes.

“That was me.””

I looked at her.

“What did you tell her?””

“Nothing about your health.””

She quickly shook her head.

“I would never break medical privacy.””

“Then what?””

“I told her what I observed.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Melissa’s voice became quiet.

“I told her you cried during labor.””

I stared at her.

“That’s normal.””

“I know.””

“I was giving birth.””

“I know.””

She looked devastated.

“But Evelyn used it.””

The anger came suddenly.

Not loud.

Not explosive.

Just heavy.

“They used me being human against me.””

Melissa nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked down at Grace.

My daughter slept peacefully.

Unaware that adults were fighting over her.

Unaware that people were collecting moments from her mother’s hardest days.

I whispered,

“She wasn’t even born, and they were already trying to take her.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Melissa immediately stood.

“Someone is coming.””

Claire looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Melissa’s face changed.

“Because Daniel asked me yesterday which rooms had hallway cameras.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“He wanted to know who could see people entering.””

The room went cold.

“He’s been watching.””

Melissa nodded.

The handle moved.

Before the door opened, Melissa whispered,

“Hide the documents.””

Claire quickly grabbed the papers.

I held Grace closer.

The door opened.

A hospital security officer stood there.

“Excuse me.””

We all looked at him.

He glanced around.

“Mrs. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“I’m sorry to disturb you.””

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

He looked at the clipboard.

“We received a request from a family member asking to verify your visitor information.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“Daniel Bennett.””

Of course.

He was checking.

Tracking.

Trying to stay ahead.

“What did he ask?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“He wanted to know whether anyone unauthorized had visited your room.””

Claire let out a bitter laugh.

“Unauthorized?””

The officer looked confused.

Melissa stepped forward.

“Sir, is that all?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Then he looked at me.

“Is everything okay?””

I looked at Grace.

Then at the people around me.

The truth was complicated.

But one thing was clear.

I was done pretending.

“Yes,” I said.

The officer waited.

I looked him directly in the eye.

“Everything is finally becoming clear.””

After he left, Melissa turned to me.

“You need to leave this hospital carefully.””

I frowned.

“I’m being discharged tomorrow.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t tell anyone your exact time.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel has been asking.””

Claire looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Melissa hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Because I saw the messages.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What messages?””

Melissa reached into her pocket.

Another phone.

Not hers.

“Daniel’s.””

Claire stared.

“Why do you have his phone?””

“I don’t.””

She placed it on the table.

“This was left in the staff lounge.””

My heart pounded.

“You found his phone?””

Melissa nodded.

“And I saw something before I turned it in.””

“What?””

She unlocked the screen.

A message was open.

From Daniel.

To Evelyn.

My hands trembled as I read.

*The recording is not the only problem. Ava has someone helping her.*

My blood ran cold.

They knew.

They knew I wasn’t alone.

Another message appeared underneath.

*If she leaves tomorrow, we lose control. We need to act before discharge.*

Claire whispered,

“They’re planning something.””

Melissa looked at me.

“Yes.””

I stared at the screen.

My fear was gone.

Replaced by something stronger.

Determination.

“Then let them come.””

Claire looked at me.

“Ava?””

I looked at Grace.

“They think I’m still the woman who will stay quiet.””

I picked up the phone.

“They think I’m still afraid.””

Melissa looked worried.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at the evidence around me.

The papers.

The messages.

The recordings.

The lies.

And I finally understood something.

Daniel and Evelyn had spent months preparing for the moment they could control me.

They had planned every detail.

Except one.

They never planned for me to fight back.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a familiar voice whispered.

“Ava.””

I froze.

Because it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It wasn’t anyone in the room.

It was someone who had been missing from my life for months.

Someone who knew Daniel better than anyone.

Someone who had a reason to expose him.

The voice continued.

“You need to listen carefully.””

I stood completely still.

“Who is this?””

The answer made my blood run cold.

“I’m the person who helped Daniel create the plan.””

A pause.

“But I’m also the person who can destroy it.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why should I believe you?””

The voice became quieter.

“Because tomorrow morning, Daniel is going to try to take Grace from you.””

My heart stopped.

“And I know exactly how he plans to do it.””

Then the call ended.

I looked at Claire.

At Melissa.

At my sleeping daughter.

May you like

Tomorrow was supposed to be the day I went home.

Instead, it was becoming the day the fight truly began.
