Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Secret
Emily screamed so loudly that the sound seemed to rip through the house.
“No!””
The video had frozen on my husband’s face, but the name beneath it remained clear.
*RYAN MERCER.*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Ryan lunged for the television.
Emily stepped in front of him.
“Don’t touch it!””
“Move.””
“No.””
“Emily, move.””
She didn’t.
That tiny defiance seemed to infuriate him more than anything else that had happened.
He grabbed her arm.
I reacted before I thought.
“Let her go!””
I shoved his hand away.
He stumbled backward.
Lily immediately pulled Emily behind her.
Patricia shouted, “Ryan!””
He looked at his mother.
And something passed between them.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
The kind shared by two people who had just realized the door to their secret had been kicked open.
I looked at the frozen screen.
“My husband knew.””
Ryan rubbed his hand where I had shoved him.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand your name is on the recording.””
“He was sick.””
“That doesn’t answer me.””
“He wasn’t thinking clearly.””
Lily stepped toward him.
“My father recorded that video before he died.””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Your father lied to everyone.””
“Maybe,” Lily said.
“But why did he put your name there?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Emily turned toward him.
“How long?””
His face hardened.
“How long what?””
“How long were you helping them?””
“I wasn’t.””
She shook her head.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I never hurt you.””
I almost shouted.
But Emily did it for me.
“You locked me in that room.””
Ryan went still.
Patricia stepped forward.
“That was for her safety.””
Emily turned on her.
“You put a camera in the room.””
Patricia opened her mouth.
Emily kept going.
“You told me I was unstable. You told me nobody would believe me. You took my money. You made me serve your family while I was eight months pregnant.””
Her voice cracked.
“And he watched.””
Ryan looked at the floor.
That was the first honest thing his face had shown all day.
Lily moved closer to the television.
“The video isn’t finished.””
She pressed a button.
The screen flickered.
My husband appeared again.
This time, he was sitting at a desk.
A glass of water stood beside him.
His hands looked thin.
His face looked tired.
But his voice was steady.
“If you’re seeing this, then I didn’t get the chance to explain myself.””
My breath caught.
“Daniel…”
His image on the screen didn’t hear me.
“I made terrible decisions. I hurt Carol. I abandoned Lily.
I lied to both of them. But there are things happening now that are beyond my own mistakes.””
He paused.
“Patricia discovered the trust before I finished setting it up.””
Patricia whispered, “No.””
My husband continued.
“She convinced me to let her manage the account temporarily.””
Lily looked at Patricia.
“Then the money started disappearing.””
A document appeared on the screen.
Wire transfers.
Dates.
Amounts.
Recipients.
I recognized some of the names.
One was a construction company.
Another was a private lender.
Another was an account ending in *4472*.
Lily paused the video.
“That’s Ryan’s account.””
Emily looked at her husband.
“What?””
Ryan shook his head.
“It wasn’t mine.””
Lily pulled out a bank statement.
“Then why does your name appear on it?””
Ryan stared at the page.
He had no answer.
I stepped closer.
“How much?””
Lily looked at the statements.
“Sixty-eight thousand dollars.””
Emily made a choking sound.
“Sixty-eight thousand?””
“I paid some things back.””
“Some?””
“Emily, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain it!””
He snapped.
“I needed money!””
Everyone went silent.
Ryan took a breath.
“I was drowning.””
“In what?””
“Debt.””
Emily stared at him.
“You told me your company was doing fine.””
“It wasn’t.””
“You told me the house was paid off.””
“It wasn’t.””
“You told me we couldn’t afford a separate apartment for me.””
He looked away.
“You didn’t know the whole situation.””
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
Not because I was less angry.
Because the puzzle was finally assembling itself.
The control.
The money.
The fear.
The secret room.
The threats.
It had all been connected.
Ryan had been using Emily’s life to cover the cracks in his own.
And Patricia had been helping him.
But I still didn’t understand why.
The video resumed.
My husband looked into the camera.
“I discovered Ryan had access to Patricia’s records.””
Ryan’s face changed.
I watched him carefully.
My husband continued.
“He knew about Lily. He knew about the trust. And he knew I intended to expose Patricia.””
The screen showed another document.
A handwritten note.
I recognized Ryan’s handwriting immediately.
It was on a message addressed to my husband.
*You should leave the trust alone.*
Emily whispered, “Oh my God.””
The video continued.
“Ryan told me I was destroying his family.””
My husband looked down.
“He said if I kept digging, there would be consequences.””
I turned toward Ryan.
“Did you threaten him?””
“No.””
The word came too fast.
Lily said quietly, “Keep watching.””
The next footage showed a parking lot.
My husband walked toward a car.
Someone followed him.
The figure was blurry.
But tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Then the camera angle changed.
A second clip.
A hallway.
A hand opening a medicine cabinet.
The person’s face never appeared.
But the sleeve was visible.
A silver watch on the wrist.
I looked at Ryan.
He wore one.
Silver.
Same shape.
Same dark band.
Emily noticed it too.
She stared at his wrist.
“Where did you get that?””
Ryan looked down.
“This?””
Emily nodded.
“Dad gave it to me.””
My blood ran cold.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
But my husband had always worn that watch.
I remembered it.
I remembered the silver face.
The scratched band.
He had told me it was one of the few things he wanted buried with him.
It hadn’t been in the coffin.
I had assumed the funeral director had misplaced it.
Now Ryan was wearing it.
I looked at Patricia.
She had gone completely pale.
“Where did you get that watch?””
Ryan snapped, “Enough.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
He stared at me.
Then he said quietly:
“Your husband gave it to me.””
“When?””
“The week before he died.””
Emily stared at him.
“You said you never saw him that week.””
Ryan said nothing.
Her face crumpled.
“You lied again.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He looked at the television.
“From him.””
My heart stopped.
“What did my husband do?””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“He threatened to expose my mother.””
Patricia shouted, “Ryan!””
He turned.
“You want me to keep lying?””
She went silent.
He looked at me.
“Your husband found out everything.””
“What everything?””
“That Patricia had been moving money for years.””
“Years?””
“Yes.””
“From where?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Family accounts.””
I stared at him.
“My accounts?””
“Some.””
“Emily’s?””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
My daughter looked like she had been punched.
“How long?””
“A few months.””
“How much?””
“I don’t know.””
Lily answered.
“More than one hundred thousand.””
Emily’s hand flew to her belly.
I caught her elbow.
“Sit down.””
“I’m fine.””
“No. Sit.””
She lowered herself into the nearest chair.
Her eyes stayed fixed on Ryan.
“You stole from me.””
“I borrowed it.””
“You stole from me.””
“I was going to put it back.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
He looked ashamed for the first time.
It didn’t make me forgive him.
It only made me hate the waste.
My daughter had trusted this man.
Loved him.
Built a future with him.
Carried his child.
And he had turned her trust into currency.
Lily suddenly spoke.
“There’s one thing the video hasn’t shown.””
She pressed play again.
My husband’s face returned.
“There is one person who knows exactly what happened the night I died.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“I don’t know whether I can trust him.””
The screen cut to black.
Then a recording started.
A phone call.
My husband’s voice.
Ryan’s voice.
And Patricia’s.
Three voices.
The conversation was muffled at first.
Then clear.
Patricia said:
“He won’t stop.””
Ryan answered:
“Then we make him stop.””
My entire body went numb.
Emily covered her mouth.
Lily stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
My husband said:
“If you touch my medication again, I will go to the police.””
Patricia said:
“You already signed everything.””
My husband responded:
“Not everything.””
Then Ryan’s voice came.
“You should have thought about that before you found Lily.””
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
I turned toward Ryan.
“You did this.””
He shook his head wildly.
“I never touched him.””
“You were there.””
“I was angry.””
“You threatened him.””
“Yes.””
Emily looked horrified.
“But I didn’t kill him.””
Patricia suddenly shouted:
“Enough!””
She walked toward the television.
“You have all heard what you wanted to hear.””
Lily stopped her.
“No.””
Patricia glared at her.
“Move.””
“You’re afraid.””
“I’m not afraid of you.””
“Then why are you shaking?””
Patricia looked at her hands.
They were trembling.
She quickly clasped them together.
“You don’t know what happened.””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell us.””
She stared at me.
For several seconds, I thought she might finally confess.
Instead, she said:
“Your husband was already dying.””
“Then why did you tamper with his medication?””
She froze.
Ryan looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
I heard something upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone turned toward the ceiling.
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Someone’s up there.””
Lily reached for her phone.
“I checked this house before I came in.””
“Then who—”
A soft thud came from the nursery.
Then another.
Something dragged across the floor.
Ryan went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He whispered:
“The nursery was empty.””
The music box started playing again.
The same slow melody.
One note.
Then another.
Then another.
And from upstairs came a woman’s voice.
A woman I had never heard before.
May you like
She spoke only four words.
“Carol… don’t trust Lily.””
