Chapter 7: The Brother I Never Knew
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The photograph remained on my phone screen.
Two men.
One was my father.
The other looked like me.
Not similar.
Not vaguely familiar.
Exactly like me.
The same jawline.
The same eyes.
The same small scar above the eyebrow.
A scar I got when I was eight years old after falling from a tree in our backyard.
A scar my mother always joked was “the Mercer family mark.””
Except now I was looking at another man who carried it too.
“This isn’t possible,” I whispered.
Maria’s face had gone pale.
Daniel stared at the image.
“Mr. Mercer…”
I interrupted him.
“No.””
My voice sounded strange.
Distant.
Like someone else was speaking.
“No, this doesn’t make sense.””
I zoomed in again.
The airport.
The date.
The man beside my father.
Everything was real.
But my mind refused to accept it.
Because there was only one explanation.
And it was impossible.
I looked at Maria.
“Who is he?””
She looked down.
“I don’t know his name.””
“You just said my father called him family.””
“Yes.””
“Then how do you not know?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Because your father never introduced him.””
I stood.
“Maria.””
She flinched.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“I need the truth.””
“I know.””
“No more protecting me.””
Her lips trembled.
“You look so much like him.””
I froze.
“Like who?””
She looked at the photograph.
“Your father’s older son.””
The room stopped.
Older son.
The words didn’t make sense.
I laughed once.
A short, empty sound.
“No.””
Maria looked at me.
“Elijah…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My father had one son.””
She said nothing.
“My father had me.””
Again, silence.
And somehow, that silence was an answer.
I stepped away from the table.
All my life, I had believed my family story was simple.
My father.
My mother.
Me.
One child.
One heir.
One person carrying the Mercer name.
Now, in one night, everything I knew had become a question.
“Who knew?””
Maria looked down.
“Your mother.””
My heart dropped.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another person who loved me but chose silence.
“When did she find out?””
“Before you were born.””
I opened my eyes.
Before I was born.
The words felt heavier.
“What are you saying?””
Maria sat down slowly.
“Your father had a son before he met your mother.””
I stared at her.
“Who was his mother?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
Maria shook her head.
“Your father never spoke about her.””
“Then why was this man at the airport?””
“Because he came back.””
“Back from where?””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I ran my hand through my hair.
This was impossible.
My entire identity was built on a foundation that apparently had missing rooms.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mr. Mercer.””
I looked at him.
“We need to find out who he is.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
*“Now you understand why Vanessa was interested in you.””*
My stomach tightened.
I showed Daniel.
His expression darkened.
“She knew?””
I stared at the message.
The question wasn’t whether Vanessa knew.
The question was how much.
I called Vanessa.
She answered after one ring.
“Elijah.””
Her voice was tense.
“You found it.””
Not hello.
Not are you okay.
You found it.
I closed my eyes.
“You knew.””
A long pause.
“What did you find?””
“You knew about him.””
Another silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“How long?””
“Before I met you.””
I gripped the phone.
“How?””
“Marcus found records.””
“What records?””
“Your father’s old business files.””
“So the entire relationship was built on this?””
“No.””
Her voice became emotional.
“No, Elijah.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
“You need to tell me everything.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“When I knew the truth.””
I laughed quietly.
“You mean when it was useful?””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I looked around the house.
“At what point did you think this was fair?””
She went silent.
“Vanessa.””
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“Try.””
Nothing.
“Exactly.””
Her breathing changed.
“You think I wanted this?””
“I think you made choices.””
“Yes.””
The answer came softly.
“I did.””
For a moment, I heard regret.
Real regret.
Then she said:
“But you don’t understand what your father did.””
I closed my eyes.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Elijah…”
“Tell me.””
Finally, she spoke.
“My father wasn’t just Marcus’s partner.””
I waited.
“He was your father’s brother.””
The words hit harder than anything before.
“What?””
“Your grandfather had two sons.””
I couldn’t move.
“Your father and Ethan.””
Maria looked up when she heard the name.
Even she hadn’t known.
Vanessa continued.
“They built the company together.””
My voice was low.
“Then why was Ethan erased?””
“Because your father betrayed him.””
I looked at Maria.
She shook her head slowly.
“No.””
Vanessa heard.
“Maria?””
I ended the call.
I couldn’t listen to both versions anymore.
Not without answers.
I turned to Maria.
“Is Ethan Whitmore my uncle?””
Maria hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Not because it was surprising anymore.
Because it was another piece of my life I had never been given.
“My father had a brother.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t I know?””
“Because after the business conflict, your father cut him out.””
“Why?””
Maria looked away.
“Because they both believed they were right.””
That wasn’t enough.
I needed facts.
Not emotions.
“What happened?””
Maria took a breath.
“Your grandfather built the company with both sons. Your father was the visionary. Ethan was the negotiator.””
“And?””
“And Ethan wanted to sell.””
“To Marcus?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Ethan believed your father was too emotional. Too attached to the company.””
“That doesn’t make him a criminal.””
“No.””
Maria looked at me.
“But what happened afterward changed everything.””
“What?””
“Your father discovered Ethan had signed documents without approval.””
“Documents transferring ownership.””
Maria nodded.
“The same type of documents Marcus is trying to use now.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
History repeating.
“My father exposed him.””
“Yes.””
“And Ethan disappeared.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph.
“But he came back.””
Maria nodded.
“Years later.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he wanted to see you.””
The room went silent.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Maria looked toward the window.
“Shortly after your mother died.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He came to the funeral.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t I see him?””
“Because your father wouldn’t allow it.””
I felt anger rise.
“My father kept my own uncle away from me?””
Maria looked sad.
“He believed he was protecting you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I walked away.
Everyone protected me.
Everyone hid things from me.
Everyone decided what truths I could handle.
And every secret eventually came back worse.
Daniel’s tablet made a sound.
He looked down.
“Mr. Mercer.””
I turned.
His face had changed.
“What?””
“We found the identity of the man in the photograph.””
I walked toward him.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“His name is Ethan Whitmore.””
I already knew.
But then he continued.
“He died fourteen years ago.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel turned the tablet toward me.
“The official record says Ethan Whitmore died in a car accident.””
My heart sank.
“But…”
Daniel hesitated.
“There’s a problem.””
“What?””
He opened another file.
A recent photograph appeared.
Taken two weeks earlier.
A man leaving a private airport.
Older.
Gray hair.
But unmistakable.
The same man from the old photograph.
My uncle.
Alive.
Daniel looked at me.
“The man who supposedly died fourteen years ago just entered the country.””
I stared at the picture.
A dead man walking back into my life.
And then my phone buzzed again.
A message.
This time, from Ethan.
The first message I had ever received from the uncle I never knew existed.
May you like
It contained only seven words.
*“Elijah, your father lied about everything.””*
