Chapter 9: The Last Secret Nora Kept
Gabriel didn’t wake Amelia.
He wanted to.
Every part of him wanted to.
But he knew better.
A child should not carry the burden of adult decisions.
He took the drawing downstairs.
Marlene was already there.
Sitting alone.
Like she had been waiting.
“She remembered.””
Gabriel placed the drawing on the table.
Marlene looked at it.
Her face changed.
“You know.””
“Who came to the house?””
She looked away.
“Mom.””
“Who?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Daniel.””
Gabriel felt the air leave his lungs.
“Daniel Price came here?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After Nora died.””
“Why?””
Marlene’s eyes filled.
“Because he told me I had to continue what Nora started.””
Gabriel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He said Nora wanted Amelia protected.””
“Protected from me?””
“No.””
Marlene shook her head.
“From him.””
Gabriel went still.
“What?””
Marlene covered her face.
“I made mistakes.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I don’t know how else to say it.””
She looked at him.
“I was wrong.””
The words were almost impossible to hear from her.
“Daniel convinced me Nora was unstable.””
Gabriel stared.
“He manipulated you.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to.””
The honesty hurt.
“Why?””
Marlene looked toward the staircase.
“Because after Nora died, I saw you falling apart.””
Gabriel said nothing.
“You stopped eating. You stopped sleeping. You barely spoke.””
“I lost my wife.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“But Daniel showed me documents. He showed me notes. He showed me recordings.””
“Fake?””
“Yes.””
Gabriel closed his eyes.
The cruelty was enormous.
Daniel hadn’t just lied.
He had built an entire reality.
“He wanted custody.””
Marlene nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Gabriel looked at her.
“You do.””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Money.””
Of course.
The answer was always money.
“Nora’s estate.””
“Yes.””
Gabriel sat down.
“Daniel wanted access.””
“He believed if Amelia went to a guardian, he could control everything.””
“Who was the guardian?””
Marlene looked ashamed.
“I was supposed to be.””
The room went silent.
Gabriel stared at her.
“You were helping him take my daughter.””
Marlene cried.
“I thought I was saving her.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You thought you knew better than everyone else.””
She didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
The next morning, Gabriel and Claire began searching for Daniel.
But he had disappeared well.
No current address.
No active business.
No social media.
Nothing.
Then Claire found something.
A bank transfer.
Three days after Nora’s death.
A large payment.
From an account connected to Daniel.
“To who?””
Claire looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“Gabriel.””
“What?””
“The payment recipient.””
She turned the laptop.
Gabriel read the name.
His stomach dropped.
*Everett Hart.*
“No.””
Claire looked serious.
“Your father received money.””
Gabriel drove home immediately.
He found Everett in the backyard.
The older man looked unsurprised.
“You found it.””
Gabriel stopped.
“You knew.””
Everett nodded.
“I knew you would eventually.””
“Why did Daniel pay you?””
Everett looked at the ground.
“Because I helped him.””
The confession was quiet.
But final.
Gabriel felt something break inside him.
“You too?””
Everett looked up.
“I was trying to stop him.””
“You took money to stop him?””
“No.””
Everett shook his head.
“He paid me because I threatened him.””
Gabriel stared.
“What?””
“I found out what he was doing.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Everett looked away.
“Because Daniel threatened Amelia.””
The world stopped.
“What did he threaten?””
“He said if I exposed him, he would make sure you lost custody.””
Gabriel laughed.
A painful sound.
“So everyone protected Amelia by lying to me.””
Everett looked devastated.
“Yes.””
“And she paid the price.””
“Yes.””
The answer was unbearable.
That night, Gabriel sat beside Amelia’s bed.
She was asleep.
Peaceful.
Finally peaceful.
He held Nora’s letter.
The one sentence kept repeating.
*Ask her about the red suitcase.*
He had asked.
But maybe he had misunderstood.
Maybe the suitcase was not the clue.
Maybe it was the place where the truth began.
He opened the old family photos again.
The red suitcase appeared in the background of one picture.
But now he noticed something.
A label attached to the handle.
A storage number.
Gabriel searched the number online.
A storage facility.
One still active.
Registered under Nora’s name.
His heart began racing.
The next morning, he drove there with Claire.
The manager brought them to a small unit.
Inside was one suitcase.
Red.
Exactly as Amelia remembered.
Gabriel opened it.
Inside were clothes.
Photographs.
A notebook.
And one final envelope.
The handwriting made him freeze.
Not Nora’s.
Daniel’s.
Claire opened it.
Inside was a confession.
Not complete.
But enough.
Daniel had written:
*She found out too late. Nora discovered the account transfers. She discovered the plan. She discovered that Amelia was never the target.*
Gabriel read the sentence again.
Never the target.
Then the next line.
*The target was Gabriel Hart.*
He looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
Claire turned the page.
And the final paragraph made both of them go silent.
*Once Gabriel loses custody, everything Nora left behind becomes accessible.*
A sound came from outside the storage unit.
Footsteps.
Someone was there.
Claire turned.
“Gabriel.””
The door slowly began to close.
May you like
And a familiar voice said:
“You should have stopped looking.””
