Chapter 5

The police searched Diane’s home two weeks later.
They found old ledgers hidden behind insulation in her attic.
There were records of deposits made under fake names.
There were photographs of warehouses.
There were handwritten notes from Ethan’s father to Robert Blackwood.
And there was one document that changed everything.
It showed that Diane had continued moving money for Blackwood years after her husband died.
She had used family accounts.
Vanessa had helped her.
The inheritance was not their only target.
They had been desperate because investigators were closing in.
They believed the Blackwood account contained proof that could send them both to prison.
They were right.
When Vanessa learned what Diane had done, she asked for a lawyer.
Then she agreed to cooperate.
Her statement was painful to hear.
She admitted Diane had been controlling her for years.
Diane used money to keep Vanessa dependent.
She threatened to cut her off whenever Vanessa questioned anything.
“She said Natalie was selfish,” Vanessa told investigators. “She said taking from her was not really stealing because she married Ethan.”
I heard that sentence and felt sick.
For years, Diane had treated me like I had no right to privacy, money, or dignity because I had married her son.
Ethan listened to Vanessa’s statement with his hands over his face.
When we got home, he stood in the kitchen for a long time.
“This is my family,” he said quietly.
I looked at him.
“It was your family.”
He nodded.
Then he said something I had waited years to hear.
“You do not have to forgive them to stay with me.”
It was not a demand.
It was not a promise that everything could return to normal.
It was permission.
For once, he understood that I needed a choice.
“I don’t know what I want yet,” I said.
“You don’t have to know today.”
That night, Ethan slept in the guest room.
Not because I asked him to punish himself.
May you like
Because he understood that trust had to be rebuilt slowly.
For the first time, I did not feel responsible for making him feel better.
