Chapter 5: The Mother Who Survived

The search for Lydia Hartwell began before sunrise.
Detective Brooks had officers checking every location connected to Ayanna.
Old addresses.
Bank records.
Medical facilities.
Every place a person could hide.
But I knew something.
People like Ayanna did not hide because they were afraid.
They hid because they were planning.
I sat at the kitchen table wearing one of Clayton’s old sweaters.
My hand was wrapped.
My ankle still hurt.
But the pain that bothered me most was the question that would not leave my mind.
How many people had suffered before me?
Clayton stood by the window.
He had not slept.
Not even for an hour.
“Mom.””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“I need to tell you something.””
The way he said it worried me.
“What?””
He turned around.
“Before I met Ayanna, there was another woman.””
I said nothing.
“A friend.””
He sat down across from me.
“Her name was Rachel.””
I frowned.
“What happened?””
“She disappeared.””
The room went quiet.
“Clayton.””
He looked ashamed.
“I thought she left.””
“Why?””
“Because Ayanna told me Rachel was obsessed with me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She said Rachel couldn’t accept that we were together.””
He rubbed his face.
“I believed her.””
I reached across the table.
“Did Rachel ever contact you?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“When?””
“Three days before our wedding.””
“Then why didn’t you answer?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because Ayanna showed me messages.””
“What messages?””
“She showed me texts from Rachel saying horrible things.””
I stared at him.
“And you believed them?””
He looked down.
“I was in love.””
Those words hurt.
Not because I blamed him.
Because I understood how powerful a lie could become when it was wrapped in love.
Detective Brooks entered the kitchen.
“I found something.””
Clayton stood.
“What?””
She placed a folder down.
“Rachel wasn’t harassing Ayanna.””
She opened it.
“She was investigating her.””
Inside were copies of emails.
Photos.
Documents.
Rachel had been collecting information about Ayanna for months.
“She found financial fraud,” Detective Brooks said.
Clayton stared.
“What kind?””
“She was moving money through fake charities.””
My hands went cold.
“She stole from people?””
“Yes.””
Clayton picked up another page.
Then froze.
“What is this?””
Detective Brooks looked at him.
“That’s why I came in here.””
He handed the paper to me.
It was a legal document.
At the bottom was a signature.
My signature.
Except it wasn’t mine.
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Clayton looked confused.
“What is it?””
“A power of attorney agreement.””
Detective Brooks nodded.
“Filed six months ago.””
My heart raced.
“I never signed this.””
“I know.””
She pointed to the signature.
“Because it’s forged.””
The room went silent.
Ayanna had not only controlled my life.
She had been preparing to control everything I owned.
My house.
My accounts.
My decisions.
My future.
“She planned this,” Clayton whispered.
Detective Brooks nodded.
“She was waiting for the right moment.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone turned.
Clayton moved toward the window.
Then stopped.
A black sedan sat outside.
A woman stepped out.
Wearing a cream coat.
Dark sunglasses.
Perfect hair.
Even from a distance, I knew.
Ayanna.
My body went cold.
“She’s here.””
Detective Brooks immediately reached for her radio.
But Ayanna did not run.
She walked calmly to the front door.
Like she owned the place.
Like she had nothing to fear.
The doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Clayton stared at the woman who had destroyed his family.
Then the door opened.
Ayanna stepped inside.
She looked different.
Not broken.
Not scared.
Calm.
“I know you found the files.””
Nobody answered.
She smiled slightly.
“I knew you would.””
Clayton stepped forward.
“Get out.””
Ayanna looked at him.
For a second, pain crossed her face.
Then it disappeared.
“You really hate me now, don’t you?””
Clayton’s voice hardened.
“You chained my mother.””
Ayanna glanced at me.
Then back at him.
“She told you that?””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Ayanna sighed.
“Clayton, your mother is very good at making people feel sorry for her.””
Detective Brooks stepped between them.
“Careful, Ms. Hartwell.””
Ayanna smiled.
“Detective, you should be careful too.””
She reached into her purse.
Everyone tensed.
But she pulled out a single envelope.
“I came here because I wanted to give you the truth.””
Clayton didn’t move.
“What truth?””
Ayanna looked directly at me.
“The truth about your mother.””
My fingers tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Ayanna placed the envelope on the table.
Then she whispered:
“Ask her why your father really died.””
The entire room froze.
May you like
Because my husband’s death had always been the one wound nobody touched.
And Ayanna knew something she shouldn’t have known.
