Chapter 7: The Memory Thomas Tried to Bury

My father didn’t answer.

That was the worst part.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Not even an excuse.

Just silence.

Noah stood in front of him, waiting for the one person who was supposed to protect him to finally tell the truth.

And my father couldn’t.

I had spent my entire life thinking Thomas Carter was a victim.

A man taken too soon.

A father stolen from his family.

But standing there, watching a twelve-year-old boy ask why his own memories had been taken from him, I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

“Dad,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

I had never seen him look so broken.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say my name until you answer him.””

My father lowered his eyes.

Noah wiped his face.

“I want to know.””

My father looked at him.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The boy’s voice trembled.

“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every day and feel like something is missing.””

Nobody spoke.

Noah continued.

“I have dreams.””

My father’s face changed.

“Dreams?””

“Yes.””

Noah looked at the floor.

“Places I’ve never been. People I don’t know. A woman singing to me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Rachel.””

Noah nodded.

“I think so.””

Ava grabbed his hand.

“You’re my brother.””

Noah looked at her.

And for the first time, he smiled.

A small, painful smile.

“I know.””

The moment between them was interrupted by Victor.

“This is exactly why Thomas was wrong.””

My father looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“You thought love was enough.””

His eyes moved to Noah.

“You thought hiding children away would save them.””

I stepped toward Victor.

“And what did you think?””

He looked at me.

“I thought the truth was more dangerous.””

“That’s why you hunted them?””

His expression remained cold.

“I was trying to contain the damage.””

I almost laughed.

“Damage?””

I pointed at Noah and Ava.

“You mean children?””

Victor didn’t respond.

That was his answer.

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Ryan.””

I turned.

She was holding something.

A small metal box.

I had seen it before.

Years ago.

In the back of her closet.

I always thought it was old jewelry.

“What is that?””

Her hands shook.

“Something I should have shown you a long time ago.””

My father looked alarmed.

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

“No more.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of anger.

“I spent twenty-five years protecting your secrets.””

She opened the box.

“I protected Thomas.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I protected Rachel.””

Then she looked at Ava and Noah.

“And I failed these children.””

Inside the box were documents.

Photos.

And a small cassette tape.

My heart tightened.

“What is that?””

My mother looked at my father.

“Your father left this for you.””

My father froze.

“He knew?””

She nodded.

“He knew one day you would find out.””

I stared at him.

“You knew I might discover all this?””

My father looked away.

“I hoped you never would.””

“Why?””

His answer was barely a whisper.

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

My mother picked up the cassette.

“There is something you need to hear.””

Victor moved forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

For the first time, his calm expression disappeared.

My mother noticed.

And that scared me.

Because Victor had been confident through everything.

But this frightened him.

“What’s on that tape?”” I asked.

My mother didn’t answer.

She looked at Daniel.

Then Thomas.

Then the children.

“The truth.””

She placed the cassette into an old player that had been sitting on a shelf in the bedroom.

The machine clicked.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My father’s voice.

But younger.

Twenty-five years younger.

“If you are hearing this, then something happened.””

Everyone went still.

My father stared at the tape.

The recording continued.

“Ryan, I don’t know how old you are when you hear this.””

My chest tightened.

“But if you found this, it means I failed to keep you away from my mistakes.””

I looked at my father.

He looked like he wanted to stop it.

But he didn’t.

The younger version of his voice continued.

“There are things your mother will tell you. There are things other people will tell you. Some will be true. Some will not.””

Static.

Then:

“The most important thing you need to know is this.””

A pause.

“Your brother and sister are innocent.””

My breath caught.

Brother and sister.

Not just Ava.

Noah too.

The recording continued.

“They were born into a war they never chose.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

My mother looked down.

“I tried to protect them by hiding them.””

A pause.

“But hiding people is not the same as saving them.””

My father’s eyes filled with tears.

The younger voice became quieter.

“I made a terrible choice.””

Everyone listened.

“I removed Noah’s memories.””

Noah stepped back.

The room went silent.

My father whispered:

“Please…”

But the tape continued.

“Not because he deserved it.””

A pause.

“Because he was remembering things that could get him killed.””

Noah looked confused.

The recording continued.

“He saw what happened the night Rachel died.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

My father looked at him.

The younger voice continued.

“And if Noah remembered, they would come for him.””

I looked at Noah.

“What did you see?””

The boy looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

The tape clicked.

Then my father’s voice said something that made everyone freeze.

“The person responsible for Rachel’s death was not Victor.””

Victor’s face changed.

My mother gasped.

My father looked at the machine.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“It was someone we trusted.””

A long pause.

“Someone inside our family.””

Nobody moved.

I slowly looked around the room.

My mother.

My father.

Daniel.

Victor.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had lied.

The tape continued.

“Ryan, if you are hearing this, you need to understand something.””

The sound of my father breathing came through the old recording.

“You were never supposed to find Ava.””

Ava looked confused.

“You were never supposed to find Noah.””

Noah looked down.

“You were never supposed to find me.””

The tape stopped.

Just like that.

The room went silent.

Then Victor laughed.

A quiet, unsettling laugh.

“You finally found the last piece.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He looked at my father.

“You really were going to tell him.””

My father stared at him.

“Tell him what?””

Victor looked at me.

“The reason your father disappeared.””

My heart started racing.

“What reason?””

Victor smiled.

“Because the night Thomas Carter died…”

A pause.

“He wasn’t running from me.””

Everyone froze.

“He was running from someone else.””

My mother whispered:

“Victor…”

But he continued.

“He was running because he discovered who betrayed him.””

I looked at my father.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door downstairs slammed.

A sound that made every person in the room turn.

Footsteps entered the house.

Not one person.

Several.

My father immediately moved toward the children.

“No.””

Victor looked toward the hallway.

And for the first time all night, he looked genuinely afraid.

“They found us.””

My mother whispered:

“Who?””

Victor stared at the staircase.

Then he said:

“The person who has been controlling this entire thing from the beginning.””

The footsteps stopped.

A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.

And a familiar voice spoke.

“Thomas.””

My father froze.

Because he recognized it.

So did my mother.

So did Victor.

The stranger stepped into the light.

And I felt my entire world collapse.

Because the person standing there was someone I had known my entire life.

Someone who had sat at my family table.

Someone who had hugged me as a child.

Someone I never once suspected.

My father whispered the name.

“Eleanor…”

My grandmother’s sister.

My great-aunt.

She smiled.

“I told you the children would lead us back here.””

Then she looked directly at me.

“Hello, Ryan.””

May you like

She tilted her head.

“You finally found out what your family did.””
