Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile
The next morning, the mansion looked completely different.
The same marble floors.
The same ocean view.
The same expensive furniture.
But the illusion was gone.
For years, the Vale mansion had represented wealth.
Power.
Perfection.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
Maelis sat at the kitchen island with a cup of tea she hadn’t touched.
A social worker named Rebecca sat across from her.
Her voice was gentle.
“You don’t have to protect anyone anymore.””
Maelis stared at the cup.
“I know.””
But she didn’t sound like she believed it.
Rebecca noticed.
“Maelis, you’ve been protecting yourself for a long time.””
The girl looked up.
“What happens now?””
Rebecca paused.
“Now, people listen.””
That answer almost made Maelis cry.
Because nobody had said that before.
Not once.
Across the mansion, Adrian stood in his office.
The room where he had made business decisions worth millions.
The room where he had signed contracts.
The room where he had convinced himself everything was fine.
Thomas placed another folder on the desk.
“Sir.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What else?””
Thomas hesitated.
“There’s more.””
Adrian opened it.
Inside were reports from employees.
Not official complaints.
Private notes.
Concerns.
Warnings.
One housekeeper had written:
“Maelis seems afraid of Mrs. Vale.””
Another:
“Child is often left without dinner.””
Another:
“I tried asking Mr. Vale, but Mrs. Vale told me not to interfere.””
Adrian’s hands tightened.
He had missed everything.
Not because he couldn’t see.
Because he didn’t want to.
A knock came.
He looked up.
Maelis stood there.
For a moment, father and daughter simply stared at each other.
“Can I come in?”” she asked.
Adrian nodded.
She entered slowly.
“I need to ask you something.””
“Anything.””
Her expression hurt him.
Because she no longer trusted that answer.
“Why didn’t you notice?””
The question was quiet.
But it destroyed him.
Adrian looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not true.””
He looked back.
Maelis’s eyes were filled with years of pain.
“You noticed things.””
He said nothing.
“You noticed when I was quiet.””
Silence.
“You noticed when I stopped asking for things.””
More silence.
“You noticed when I stopped calling you Dad.””
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
Because she was right.
He had noticed.
He had just convinced himself there was another explanation.
“She told me you were difficult,” he whispered.
Maelis smiled sadly.
“Of course she did.””
“She said you were angry because you missed your mother.””
“I did miss my mother.””
Adrian looked down.
“But that doesn’t mean she had the right to hurt me.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, she didn’t.””
For the first time in years, Maelis heard him say it.
Not an excuse.
Not a defense.
Just the truth.
But forgiveness was not something that happened overnight.
“I don’t know how to trust you again,” she said.
Adrian nodded.
“I know.””
That surprised her.
He didn’t argue.
He didn’t demand forgiveness.
“I know I have to earn it.””
Later that afternoon, Corisande’s lawyer arrived.
She had changed completely.
Gone was the confident woman from the party.
Now she wore sunglasses indoors.
She walked through the mansion like someone trying to escape a disaster.
Her lawyer spoke quietly.
“This can still be controlled.””
Corisande looked at him.
“How?””
“We need to question Maelis’s credibility.””
Corisande frowned.
“She’s fourteen.””
“Exactly.””
The lawyer adjusted his tie.
“People are emotional now. But emotions fade.””
Corisande smiled faintly.
The old Corisande returned.
“What do we do?””
“We find something.””
“Something?””
“Something that makes people doubt her.””
Corisande thought.
Then slowly smiled.
“I know exactly what.””
That evening, a story appeared online.
A headline spread across social media.
“Billionaire’s Daughter Accused of Attacking Stepmother During Family Event.””
The article included carefully chosen photos.
Not the security footage.
Not the recordings.
Only the moment Corisande was on the floor.
The internet exploded.
Some people defended Maelis.
Others attacked her.
But then a second article appeared.
With a shocking claim.
A source close to the family said:
“Maelis has always had behavioral issues.””
Adrian read the article.
Then his phone rang.
It was Helena.
Her voice sounded frightened.
“Adrian.””
“What happened?””
“You need to see who gave the interview.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then Helena whispered:
“Maelis’s biological mother’s sister.””
Adrian froze.
Because Maelis’s mother had been dead for twelve years.
May you like
And nobody from that side of the family had spoken publicly since.
Until now.
