Chapter 1

Vanessa’s hands struck my back before I saw her face.
I was eight months pregnant, standing at the top of the courthouse steps.
One moment, I was holding the railing.
The next, I was falling.
I twisted in the air and wrapped both arms around my belly.
My shoulder struck the marble first.
Then my hip.
Pain exploded through my body as I slid down three steps and collapsed in front of dozens of people.
“My baby!”
Vanessa stood above me in a red dress.
My husband, Richard, was beside her.
He did not run to help me.
He looked at the courthouse cameras.
Then he said, “She slipped.”
Vanessa nodded quickly.
“I tried to catch her.”
“You pushed me,” I gasped.
A cramp tightened across my stomach.
I called out again.
That was when my brother came through the courthouse doors.
Harrison had represented me at the emergency divorce hearing that morning. He was still carrying his leather case.
When he saw me on the steps, his expression changed.
“Emily!”
He dropped beside me.
“Don’t move. An ambulance is coming.”
Vanessa started backing away.
Harrison stood.
“Stay where you are.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
She turned and ran.
Harrison caught her near the railing.
Vanessa swung her purse at his face.
He knocked it away.
She slapped him and clawed at his neck.
Harrison struck her hand aside, forced her onto the ground, and pinned her wrists behind her back.
“You just attacked a pregnant woman in front of a courthouse.”
Richard charged down the steps.
“Get off her!”
He grabbed Harrison’s shoulder.
My brother turned and struck him once.
Richard stumbled into a stone column.
Then Harrison forced him down beside Vanessa and held both of them until courthouse deputies arrived.
“Arrest him!” Richard shouted. “He attacked us!”
Harrison pointed toward the nearest camera.
“Get the recording.”
Deputies separated everyone.
An ambulance rushed me to the hospital while officers reviewed the footage.
The video showed Vanessa following me from the courthouse.
It showed Richard looking around before she pushed me.
It showed him step away instead of helping.
At the hospital, doctors monitored the baby for three terrifying hours.
Finally, Dr. Patel entered with a tired smile.
“Your daughter is safe.”
I started crying.
The fall had bruised my shoulder and triggered contractions, but they stopped before labor began.
Harrison sat beside me and held my hand.
“I should have walked you outside.”
“This isn’t your fault.”
“It happened because of the case.”
That morning, I had requested emergency protection from Richard.
For months, he had transferred money from our company into accounts connected to Vanessa.
When I confronted him, he threatened to have me declared unstable and take our baby after she was born.
The judge denied my request.
He claimed there was insufficient evidence.
Now Richard and Vanessa had attacked me on the steps of the same courthouse.
Deputies arrived at the hospital.
They arrested Richard and Vanessa for assault, conspiracy, and endangering my unborn child.
Richard looked at me.
“Tell them it was an accident.”
I placed one hand over my belly.
“You watched her push me.”
“If you testify, I’ll make sure you never see our daughter.”
Harrison stepped between us.
“That threat was recorded too.”
As officers led them away, my brother held my hand.
“They wanted you silenced,” he said. “Now the entire state knows what they did.”
Then a nurse entered carrying an envelope found beneath my hospital bed.
Inside was a photograph of me sleeping in that same room.
Written across it were seven words.
