Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Curtain
For one heartbeat, everyone in the chapel had a gun raised.
Rachel aimed at Edward.
The two officers at the doors aimed at Edward.
Edward aimed back.
And Daniel stood between me and the old man who had apparently controlled our lives from the shadows for decades.
Edward's expression was almost amused.
“Put your weapons down.””
Rachel didn't move.
“Drop yours first.””
Edward smiled.
“You still believe this is a negotiation.””
His thumb moved.
I saw it.
A tiny movement on the grip.
“Rachel,” I said.
She glanced at me.
“Don't shoot.””
Edward's eyes shifted toward me.
I whispered, “He's not here to kill us.””
“How do you know?”” Rachel asked.
“Because he wants something.””
Edward's smile disappeared.
“You're observant.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You killed my father.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I made your father understand the consequences of betrayal.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You ordered his death.””
Edward tapped his cane once.
“Your father chose his own fate.””
I stepped closer.
“You told him to stay silent.””
“He refused.””
“You threatened me.””
“He endangered you.””
“You lied about Daniel.””
Edward's gaze moved to his grandson.
“Daniel was never supposed to know who his father was.””
Daniel's voice shook.
“You erased my family.””
Edward's expression remained calm.
“I preserved it.””
“You murdered people.””
“I removed threats.””
Rachel's eyes hardened.
“That is not preservation.””
Edward looked at her.
“Detective, you have been investigating Mercer Realty for six months.””
Rachel stiffened.
“How do you know that?””
“Because you report to someone who reports to me.””
The chapel went silent.
Rachel's expression changed.
“What?””
Edward's smile returned.
“Not everything in this city operates the way you think it does.””
He glanced toward the officer nearest the doors.
“Put your weapon down, Officer Reed.””
The officer hesitated.
Edward looked at his face.
“Your daughter's tuition payment clears tomorrow.””
The officer's weapon lowered.
Rachel stared at him.
“You bought him.””
“I bought everyone who was for sale.””
Daniel stepped toward Edward.
“And my father?””
Edward's voice softened.
“Your father wasn't for sale.””
He paused.
“He was a problem.””
Daniel lunged.
I grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
He looked at me.
“That man killed my father.””
“I know.””
“He killed Clara's father.””
Clara, who had remained near the back of the chapel, spoke quietly.
“He tried to kill me too.””
Edward's eyes moved to her.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Clara walked forward.
“I did.””
“For eleven years.””
“Yes.””
“And yet you returned.””
“Because you failed.””
The old man's face hardened.
“Careful.””
Clara smiled.
“You're losing.””
Edward laughed.
“You think because a handful of documents have surfaced that I've lost?””
He tapped the cane again.
“You don't understand the scale of what you're facing.””
I lifted the metal box from the floor.
“Then explain it.””
Edward's gaze locked on it.
“Put that down.””
“No.””
“Emily.””
“You know my name.””
“I know everything about you.””
I opened the metal box.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Bank records.
Birth certificates.
Property deeds.
And a small digital recorder.
At the bottom lay a black notebook.
The same one from my father's files.
Except this one was complete.
Rachel moved closer.
“What is that?””
I lifted it.
Edward's composure finally cracked.
“Don't open it.””
I smiled.
“Now I know where you keep your secrets.””
I opened the ledger.
The first pages listed payments.
Hundreds of them.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
But halfway through, the handwriting changed.
The entries became personal.
*HENRY HART — SURVEILLANCE*
*CLARA MERCER — DISAPPEARANCE*
*DANIEL MERCER — IDENTITY ALTERATION*
My fingers stopped.
Daniel stared at the page.
“Identity alteration.””
Rachel leaned over my shoulder.
“What does that mean?””
I turned the page.
There was a hospital document stapled inside.
Daniel Mercer.
Date of birth.
October 14, 1992.
Mother: *Victoria Mercer.*
Father: *Henry Hart.*
Daniel stopped breathing.
Victoria looked away.
“So it's true,” he whispered.
Edward's voice remained calm.
“You wanted the truth.””
“Yes.””
“Then accept it.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You changed my birth certificate.””
“Yes.””
“You stole my father's name.””
“Yes.””
“You made me believe I belonged to you.””
Edward stared at him.
“You belonged to the family.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“I belonged to my father.””
Edward's expression hardened.
“Henry was weak.””
“And you were cruel.””
The words landed.
Edward's eyes narrowed.
“You speak exactly like him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That isn't an insult.””
Edward raised his gun slightly.
“Enough.””
I moved between them.
“Why was I on the ledger?””
Edward looked at me.
“Because Henry trusted you.””
“I was nineteen.””
“He believed you would eventually uncover everything.””
“Then why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he knew I was watching.””
I felt a chill.
“You watched me?””
“For years.””
The room seemed suddenly smaller.
“Every job.””
“Every apartment.””
“Every relationship.””
“Every time you came near this family.””
Edward's voice was almost conversational.
“You were monitored.””
Rachel looked furious.
“For what?””
“To make sure she never found the ledger.””
I stared at Edward.
“And Daniel?””
“He was monitored too.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Then our entire relationship—”
“Was not an accident,” Edward said.
The words struck harder than anything else.
Daniel looked at me.
I looked at him.
Edward continued.
“I introduced you.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew him before I did.””
“Yes.””
“You arranged our first meeting.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He smiled.
“Because I needed Daniel married.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Married to Emily.””
Edward nodded.
“Your father had hidden evidence outside the Mercer system. I believed marriage would bring it into the family.””
My mouth went dry.
“You used me.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“I used him too.””
Daniel looked sick.
Edward continued.
“You were both useful.””
Something inside me snapped.
“You thought you could use us like pieces on a board.””
Edward tilted his head.
“You were pieces.””
I closed the ledger.
“Not anymore.””
For the first time, Edward looked genuinely angry.
“Give me the book.””
“No.””
“Emily.””
“No.””
Rachel stepped beside me.
“She's not giving it to you.””
Edward laughed.
“You still think you can arrest me.””
Rachel raised her weapon.
“I can.””
Edward looked toward the officer he'd bribed.
“Officer Reed.””
The officer slowly raised his gun.
Rachel's eyes widened.
“Don't.””
Reed looked terrified.
“I'm sorry.””
Edward said, “Take the ledger.””
Reed moved toward us.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't you dare.””
Reed's gun shook.
“I have a family.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“So does he.””
She pointed toward Edward.
“He is threatening yours.””
Reed hesitated.
Edward's face darkened.
“You have ten seconds.””
Reed looked at Rachel.
Then at Edward.
Then he lowered his weapon.
“No.””
Edward's smile disappeared.
“Excuse me?””
Reed swallowed.
“I said no.””
Edward reached for his phone.
Reed shook his head.
“You can ruin me.””
He glanced toward his shaking hands.
“But I won't help you hurt another family.””
Rachel took the gun from him.
“Thank you.””
Edward cursed.
Then the chapel lights went out.
Again.
But this time I was ready.
I grabbed Daniel's hand.
“Down.””
A gunshot cracked overhead.
Glass shattered.
Someone screamed.
Rachel shouted, “Stay down!””
I felt Daniel pull me behind a pew.
A second shot struck the stone wall.
Then another.
The darkness became chaos.
Footsteps thundered across the chapel.
I heard Edward shouting.
“Get the ledger!””
Someone grabbed my shoulder.
I twisted.
A man's face appeared inches from mine.
I drove my elbow into his ribs.
He grunted.
The ledger fell.
Daniel tackled him.
They crashed into the pew.
I grabbed the book.
“Daniel!””
He rolled away.
The man fled toward the side door.
Rachel chased him.
“Stop!””
I clutched the ledger.
Then the emergency lights came back.
Edward was gone.
His gun lay on the floor.
The chapel doors were still locked.
Rachel stopped near the side entrance.
“He vanished.””
Clara stared at the floor.
“No.””
She pointed toward the altar.
“Look.””
A narrow section of stone had moved.
A passageway.
Daniel stared.
“He built tunnels beneath the hotel.””
Clara nodded.
“He built tunnels beneath the entire property.””
Rachel swore.
I opened the ledger again.
A loose page fell from inside.
I picked it up.
It contained one final entry.
*PROJECT HEIR — COMPLETED*
Beneath it were three names.
*HENRY HART — FAILED*
*DANIEL MERCER — SUCCESSFUL*
*EMILY HART — PENDING*
My blood ran cold.
Rachel looked at the page.
“What does ‘pending’ mean?””
I turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
My father's handwriting.
Only four words.
*HE KNOWS WHO SHE IS.*
Daniel stared at me.
“Who you are?””
I shook my head.
“I don't know.””
Clara's face suddenly changed.
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She pointed to the last line of the ledger.
“Emily, look at the date.””
I did.
It was dated three days before my birth.
Then I saw the final notation beneath it.
*THE GIRL IS NOT HENRY'S DAUGHTER.*
I stopped breathing.
Daniel read it over my shoulder.
His face went pale.
Clara whispered:
“Your father didn't leave that message to tell you who Henry was.””
She looked at me.
“He left it because he knew you would eventually discover who your biological father really was.””
Rachel stared at the page.
“Then who is it?””
A sound echoed from the tunnel.
Slow footsteps.
Coming closer.
Edward's voice floated through the darkness.
“You finally asked the right question.””
He stepped into view.
And beside him stood a man I had seen before.
At my father's funeral.
In old photographs.
In dreams I couldn't explain.
The man stared at me.
Then Edward smiled.
“Emily, meet the man who was your father.””
Edward paused.
“The man Henry died protecting.””
The stranger looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“I'm sorry I had to let you believe I was dead.””
