Chapter 6: The Night the Truth Walked Into the Room

The graduation dinner began at seven.

Brianna had spent the entire afternoon getting ready.

Her hair was styled in soft waves. A makeup artist had given her a flawless finish, and her jewelry sparkled beneath the bedroom lights.

The stolen gown hung from the wardrobe.

Despite the damaged train, Vanessa had arranged for a tailor to repair it.

But the stain remained.

“Can you cover it with more crystals?”” Brianna asked.

The tailor shook his head.

“Not without changing the original design.””

“Then change it!””

“Miss, the silk has been chemically damaged. Any additional treatment could destroy the fabric.””

Brianna turned toward Vanessa.

“Mom!””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Just make it look presentable.””

The tailor sighed and carefully arranged the train.

Nia watched from the hallway.

She had spent the afternoon finishing the Phoenix gown.

It wasn't perfect.

One section of metallic embroidery still needed attention, and the back closure had taken three attempts to secure.

But the silhouette was magnificent.

The translucent layers floated around the sculptural train, catching light with every movement.

Nia had sewn the final butterfly into the shoulder at 5:48 p.m.

She stood in front of the mirror wearing it over a simple underlayer.

For a moment, she barely recognized herself.

The gown didn't make her look like someone else.

It made her look like the person she had always wanted to become.

Her phone rang.

Maya.

“Are you ready?””

“Almost.””

“I'm outside.””

Nia grabbed her small sewing kit and the cream envelope from her mother.

Before leaving, she looked at the old photograph of Elaine.

“I'm going to finish what you started.””

Then she walked downstairs.

Vanessa was standing beside Brianna.

When she saw Nia, she frowned.

“Where are you going?””

“To the graduation dinner.””

Vanessa looked her up and down.

“You're not wearing that.””

“Why not?””

“Because this is Brianna's night.””

“It's a family graduation dinner. I'm invited.””

Vanessa glanced at the unusual gown.

“What on earth is that supposed to be?””

“Something I made.””

Brianna laughed.

“You actually finished it?””

“Yes.””

“It looks like a curtain.””

Nia smiled.

“Then I suppose you'll have to look at it from a distance.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You are not going to embarrass this family.””

Nia reached for the front door.

“I'm not the one who should be worried about embarrassment.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Nia!””

But the door had already closed.

The dinner was being held at the Grand Meridian Hotel.

A large ballroom had been decorated with white flowers, gold tablecloths, and elegant lighting.

Guests filled the room.

Brianna entered first.

Heads turned toward the stolen gown.

Several people complimented her.

“Oh, Brianna! That dress is incredible!””

“Where did you get it?””

“Is it custom?””

Brianna smiled.

“My sister made it for me.””

Nia, standing near the entrance, heard every word.

Maya's expression darkened.

“She really has no shame.””

Nia touched her arm.

“Not yet.””

Across the room, Vanessa was greeting guests.

A woman approached her.

“Vanessa, I saw the photographs online. Brianna's dress is beautiful.””

Vanessa smiled proudly.

“She's always had an eye for fashion.””

Nia watched them.

Then she noticed someone entering the ballroom.

Isabelle Monroe.

She wore a navy evening suit and carried a slim leather folder.

Beside her walked a man Nia recognized from the competition committee's website.

The event coordinator.

Nia's heart began to race.

Maya leaned closer.

“Are they here for you?””

“I think so.””

Before Nia could move, Brianna spotted her.

“Oh, no.””

She walked over, carefully lifting the damaged train.

“What are you doing here?””

“Attending dinner.””

“Go home.””

“No.””

Brianna lowered her voice.

“Mom doesn't want you here.””

“Then she can ask me to leave herself.””

Brianna looked at Nia's gown.

“Did you make that from leftover fabric?””

“Yes.””

“It looks ridiculous.””

Nia glanced at the stolen dress.

“Yours looks familiar.””

Brianna's smile vanished.

“Don't start.””

“I haven't started anything.””

At that moment, the event coordinator approached.

“Excuse me. Are you Brianna Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I'm Daniel Brooks, from the Young American Couture Competition.””

Brianna's expression brightened.

“Oh! You must have seen my dress online.””

Daniel looked at the gown.

“Yes. I have.””

He opened his folder.

“We received a complaint regarding the ownership of this design.””

Vanessa appeared immediately.

“This is a family matter.””

Daniel remained professional.

“I'm afraid it concerns a registered competition entry.””

Brianna swallowed.

“It's mine.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Can you explain how you created the embroidery pattern?””

Brianna blinked.

“What?””

“The embroidery. The blue pattern running down the bodice. How did you construct it?””

Brianna glanced at Vanessa.

“My sister helped.””

Nia stepped forward.

“I didn't help. I made it.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That's not true.””

Daniel raised his hand.

“We have received photographs showing the construction process. We'd like to examine the original identification label.””

Brianna's face changed.

“What label?””

Nia reached into her bag and removed the photographs.

“Here.””

Daniel examined them.

He compared the registration number with his records.

Then he looked directly at Brianna.

“This garment is registered to Nia Carter.””

A murmur spread through the nearby guests.

Brianna laughed nervously.

“That must be a mistake.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The registration was completed four months ago. We also have the original design submission and construction photographs.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She's lying. My daughter made that dress.””

Isabelle approached.

“Then perhaps Brianna can explain the construction techniques.””

Vanessa turned.

“You again.””

Isabelle ignored her.

“Daniel, I believe the documentation is sufficient. However, there's another issue.””

She pointed toward the train.

“The garment has been altered and chemically damaged since its original construction.””

Daniel examined the stain.

“Who authorized the cleaning?””

Brianna looked at her mother.

Vanessa answered quickly.

“I did.””

“Did you know the garment belonged to another contestant?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“She gave it to Brianna.””

Nia shook her head.

“No. You took it after hitting me.””

Several guests gasped.

Vanessa's face flushed.

“That's a ridiculous accusation.””

Maya stepped forward.

“I saw the injury the next morning. Nia sent me a photograph.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Perhaps we should move this discussion somewhere private.””

But Isabelle shook her head.

“I believe the ownership question should be resolved clearly. This is a public event, and the garment has been publicly represented as Brianna's work.””

She turned toward the guests.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this dress was created by Nia Carter. She has documented every stage of its construction.””

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom, say something!””

Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.

“Don't cry.””

Then she looked at Nia.

“You've ruined your sister's night.””

Nia stared at her.

“No. I just stopped letting you ruin mine.””

Daniel requested that both sisters attend a brief review at a nearby conference table.

Vanessa insisted on accompanying Brianna.

Isabelle sat opposite them.

Daniel placed the photographs on the table.

“Nia, can you explain the original design?””

Nia opened her sketchbook.

She showed the early drawings, fabric samples, and photographs from the construction process.

She explained how she had created the butterfly embroidery, treated the blue silk, and constructed the fitted bodice.

Daniel listened carefully.

Then he turned to Brianna.

“Do you have any original sketches?””

Brianna hesitated.

“My mother has them.””

“Can you show us?””

Vanessa stiffened.

“They're at home.””

“Can you describe the pattern?””

Brianna stared at the table.

“I don't remember.””

Daniel made a note.

Then Nia placed one final photograph on the table.

It showed Brianna wearing the gown in front of her bedroom mirror.

The date was visible.

It had been posted publicly two days earlier.

Underneath, Brianna had written:

Custom-made by me.

Daniel looked at her.

“You publicly claimed authorship?””

Brianna's lips trembled.

“I was just posting a picture.””

“Your caption says otherwise.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“This is enough. We're leaving.””

Isabelle placed another document on the table.

“Not quite. There's a separate matter regarding the trust.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Isabelle opened the folder.

“We've identified the apartment purchased using funds from Elaine Carter's educational trust.””

Daniel looked between them.

“I'm not sure this is relevant to the competition.””

“It is relevant to Nia's eligibility and welfare,” Isabelle replied.

“The trust was established to support her education. Its funds appear to have been diverted.””

Vanessa's face became pale.

“You can't prove that.””

Isabelle calmly placed the bank statements on the table.

“We have the transactions, the authorization signatures, and the property records.””

Vanessa looked at the documents.

Then she looked at Nia.

“You have no idea what your mother did to me.””

Nia's voice was quiet.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with anger.

“Your mother promised me half of everything!””

Isabelle shook her head.

“No. She offered you a fair settlement after dissolving the business partnership.””

Vanessa slammed her hand on the table.

“Because she wanted everything!””

Nia stared at her.

“You took my education money because you were angry at Mom?””

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she had no answer.

Then Brianna began crying.

“Mom, you told me the dress was mine.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Brianna, stop.””

“You told me Nia had made it for me!””

“I said stop!””

The room fell silent.

Nia looked at her stepsister.

“You knew I made it.””

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

“I thought Mom had permission.””

“Did you?””

Brianna lowered her eyes.

She didn't answer.

The meeting ended with the competition committee confirming that Nia's authorship had been established.

Brianna's claim was formally rejected.

Vanessa was informed that the trust's attorneys would pursue the financial investigation separately.

But there was one final surprise.

Daniel approached Nia near the ballroom entrance.

“Ms. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“Your original submission is still eligible, but because the garment has been damaged, the committee will allow you to present your replacement design.””

Nia's eyes widened.

“The Phoenix gown?””

Daniel smiled.

“If that's your final entry.””

“It is.””

“Then we'll see you at the preliminary judging.””

He handed her a sealed envelope.

Inside was her updated competition schedule.

The judging would take place in forty-eight hours.

Nia looked at the date.

She had barely enough time to finish the final details.

But she could do it.

Across the ballroom, Vanessa was arguing with Isabelle.

“You think you've won?”” Vanessa hissed.

Isabelle remained composed.

“This was never about winning.””

Vanessa glanced toward Nia.

“She's going to destroy everything.””

Isabelle looked at her sadly.

“No, Vanessa. She's finally building something of her own.””

Nia turned away.

Maya appeared beside her.

“You okay?””

Nia nodded.

“I think so.””

Maya looked at the damaged gown.

“What are you going to do with it?””

Nia studied the crystals and embroidered butterflies.

For a moment, she remembered the nights spent creating it.

Then she remembered the slap.

The laughter.

The lies.

She looked at Maya.

“I'm going to keep it.””

“Why?””

“Because it's proof that someone can take something from me without taking away what I know how to create.””

Maya smiled.

“That's my girl.””

Nia walked toward the exit.

But just as she reached the doors, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of an old document.

It was a birth certificate.

Nia recognized her mother's name.

Elaine Carter.

But the name listed under the father's information wasn't the man Nia had grown up believing was her father.

It was someone else entirely.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

If you want to understand why Vanessa has spent twenty years trying to destroy your future, ask Isabelle who your real father is.

Nia's fingers went cold.

She looked across the ballroom.

Isabelle was speaking to Daniel.

Then Nia looked back at the message.

Another text arrived.

And whatever you do, don't let Vanessa find out you've seen this.

Nia slowly raised her eyes.

Vanessa was standing across the room.

May you like

Watching her.

And somehow, she already knew.
